Mouse wheel has become broken. How do you fix..?

Goes up for a while and then goes down. Please help!

Do you have compressed air to blow out underneath the switch/wheel? That's step one.

Step 2 is cleaning the thing out as best you can without taking it apart. Get a damp, not dripping, paper towel. Power off the system. Run the mouse upside down firmly, but not with too much force, wheel side down so the paper towel can absorb some of the gunk that comes up. Repeat a time or two if results are marginal. If the wheel is rubber or polyvinyl coated, I wouldn't use anything chemical to clean it as that will probably crack the rubber and make it worse, unless you have actual rubber restorer.

Step 3 is to try to find someone else taking your mouse apart and seeing if you can clean it more directly.

Step 4 is to realize most mouse switches are made to break and replace it with a $30 something or other.
