the hunt for the wilderpeople is a very very good movie

Definitively. Brilliant film.

And that brings us to our next offer. This Saturday, New Zealand Month presents Whale Rider (2002)

Following a young Maori girl who decides to go against traditions by wanting the seemingly impossible: becoming a leader in her community. This one has a powerful message of gender equality, human connection to nature, and honoring traditions without that preventing one from also forging their own path.

We are back to both Taskmaster NZ and Wellington Paranormal for this date's preshow. Hop in! It's going to be great!

So, on November 11, BYOB Discord, C&D Movie Nite channel:
Taskmaster NZ (S2E04) starts at 22:45 UTC (2:45 pm PST / 5:45 pm EST)
Wellington Paranormal (S1E03) starts at 23:30 UTC (3:30 pm PST / 6:30 pm EST)
Whale Rider starts at 00:00 UTC (4:00 pm PST / 7:00 pm EST)

Whale Rider was truly a beautiful film. Thank you to all who came along on that journey!

Up next is a comedy film released this year, it's Red, White and Brass (2023)

It's the tale about a pair of Tonga immigrants in New Zealand desperately trying to find a way to get into a Rugby match between Tonga vs France. They try to scam their way in by forming a marching band, even though they don't have a clue how any of it works. It's based on a true story, actually, and one of the people involved back then is also on writing duty here, so it's gonna feel personal but also pretty funny. Don't miss out!

Returning as preshow, we will also have Guy Mont's Spelling Bee and Outrageous Fortune, starting an hour and half before the main feature.

Coming up next, it's Goodbye Pork Pie (1981)!

The ultimate NZ roadtrip adventure and a cult classic, this is a comedy about two dumbnuts racing a stolen Mini Cooper throughout the whole of New Zealand, while fleeing from the cops. Experts agree it will give you a boost of independence and nonconformity energy! That's right! Here in Coupons & Deals Movie Nite we tell The Man where he can shove it.

One hour and 15 minutes earlier start our preshows, which are another episode of Taskmaster NZ and Wellington Paranormal. Be honest, you are being spoiled with all this quality content.

Those certainly were unlikable main characters, but I can see why New Zealanders would find them heroic what with all the cop defiance shown throughout.

Here's a funny curiosity I just learned. This movie actually had a remake filmed recently in 2017, and it was apparently a pretty decent one at that, though the story had several changes (some probably for the better). I think I'd like to watch that one at some point.

Anyway, the funny part is that on the remake's opening day, Invercargill (the destination our two outlaws were set for in the original) had an actual red carpet event! Clearly they love the film there. And, reportedly, there were tons of people with Minis showing up for the film -- people who actually drove all the way from the northern part of NZ all the way down to the South! Now that must have been a sight to behold.

This Wednesday, The Piano (1993)

From Jane Campion's mind comes a unique tale of a mute lady taken with her young daughter to New Zealand for an arranged marriage, along with their piano. Both Holly Hunter (Ada) and Anna Paquin (Flora) won Oscars for their wondrous acting on this film, the former without being able to communicate anything with words on screen, yet setting the perfect mood in every scene. Musically, also an astonishing work by Michael Nyman.

Yes, it's a capital Classic and our New Zealand month wouldn't be complete without it, so here we are! If you haven't watched it in years or somehow never got the chance to before, come along in this journey.

Preshows this time are Guy Montgomery's Spelling Bee and Wellington Paranormal.

We are reaching the end of New Zealand month and our penultimate film is 2010's Boy from Taika Waititi.

A coming of age story is nothing new, but this one is special. Funny, ridiculous at times, but extremely insightful. It's the story of a Maori kid who never met his dad, and just as that guy leaves prison and is back just to recover some hidden money, they met and their realities clash (imaginary and real).

Trailer:

Tomorrow we come to the end of New Zealand month with a funny horror movie, it's The Frighteners (1996)

A film by Peter Jackson, co-written with Fran Walsh, and starring Michael J. Fox in the leading role of some dude who can see dead people, but instead of using that skill for good, he makes it a profitable racketeer. It's the first big job of NZ's own special effects team WETA. It's got an impressive acting role by Jeffrey Combs. And it's got Danny Elfman working on the soundtrack. What more could we want?

We will also have the final episode of Guy Montgomery's Spelling Bee and a secret, mysterious TV show that, similarly to the main feature, is a New Zealand+USA production. It's got princesses, and warriors, and warrior princesses! If you can't guess, its main lead is played by a lady whose name has four letters and whose character also has a four letter name. What could it be??

So, this Wednesday, November 29, on the BYOB Discord, C&D Movie Nite channel:
Guy Montgomerry's Guy Mont Spelling Bee (S1E08) starts at 22:30 UTC (2:30 pm PST / 5:30pm EST)

Or you can just sit down and watch a comfy film with some astonishing beautiful animation and musical score and enjoy the moment. Either works!

Next time (this Wednesday) our Comfy Holidays month comes upon a Jim Henson and George Lucas production, starring an up and coming musical artist that you may have heard of at some point... it's the Labyrinth (1986)

Musical, fantasy, comedy, this one's got them all. The cheerfulness vibe alone will rub off on you even if inside you are the deadest of dead. This I promise you.

And, also, amazing puppet work by Henson et al who know their craft like no one else. The amount of detail and creativity will surprise you.

And to warm you before the movie even starts we got ourselves these awesome preshows:

Shaun the Sheep: The Flight of Christmas (2021) is a recent holiday special by Aardman that is just a delight to experience. And since we will be experiencing some great stop-motion animation, why not have one of the very best in the genre with Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers (1993), claymation at its finest? Both hilarious, too. You won't want to miss either of them.

But wait! There's more! A Bluey episode right after Labyrinth! So many prizes to watch, ho ho ho!

This Wednesday, December 6, on the BYOB Discord, C&D Movie Nite channel:

Coming up next, a movie that went through (development) hell and back, one of the funniest things Disney has ever released under their brand (by accident probably), it's The Emperor's New Groove (2000)

How do you release one of the most zaniest non-Looney Tunes animated film and market it with this dumb poster? It also turned out to be one of their final traditional animated films, thus making its historical importance that much great.

If you've never watched this one, though, be ready to burst a rib or two laughing. You can have good jokes on just about any movie, but the acting in this one is so spot on that the delivery will get you every time.

Preshows one hour earlier, this time are:

Two new episodes of Fraggle Rock and Muppets Mayhem, and the final Paul Rudish Mickey Mouse short released this year.

Plus, a Bluey episode right after the film.

So, this Saturday, December 9, on the BYOB Discord, C&D Movie Nite channel:

We go back this time, for next Wednesday in Comfy Holidays will give us a chance to revisit the classic Mary Poppins (1964)

This musical, which mixes both live-action and animation has Julie Andrews (then mostly unknown) starring as the magical nanny, who has sang and delighted generations of children and adults over the decades. And Mr Van Dyke, when he's not leaping about the London rooftops, dances with penguins, which is also a particular standout.

It's just a complete banger of a musical with tons of memorable songs, great acting, and a lot of heart. Don't miss out if you've never watched it before or haven't revisited in years.

For preshows, we got three rather different cartoons:

An episode of Count Duckula (the one where they mistakenly get sent to Australia), a particular amazing Popeye short (the Sinbad one from 1936), and the 1983 Disney adaptation of Charles Dickens' a Christmas Carol.

This Wednesday, December 13, on the BYOB Discord, C&D Movie Nite channel:

This Wednesday, we do an exploration on modern animation, a selection of some of my favorites from recent years. We start with a preshow featuring Lupin's Tales, The Looney Tunes Show, and Hilda

Lupin's Tales is about an adorable wolf cub who wants to beat the stereotype of growing up to be a villain. He wants to be the hero of every story, but his inexperience generally gets in the way.

The Looney Tunes Show puts those characters in a fun romp of a sitcom. It's a very different take and I love the hell out of it.

Hilda is a comfy show about this young girl and her friends interacting with the supernatural in the woods. It can get rather poignant sometimes.

But that's just the preshow!

The main feature is a true marvel of a film, visually astonishing and with some of the most stylish, stunning animation that will ever grace the industry. Not to mention its tight pacing, the incredible plot, the glorious voice acting... Why, I'm talking about 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse!

Don't you dare miss on this one! Or the Bluey episode right after it!

drat if Wednesday wasn't intense!

This Saturday will be far less hectic, with a classic from 1947, Miracle on 34th Street

Among the cynicism and commercialism around Christmas, the late 40's, so soon after the most devastating war the world had ever seen, weren't exactly the most jolly of times. But one person rises up to the occasion: he's Kris Kringle, a lovely old man who believes he's actually Santa Claus. "The important thing is to make children happy", he says.

This is the heartwarming tale of a skeptical single mom, raising a little girl alone, both of whom start to believe that make believe and fantasy are important in life after all. There would be no room for hope and dreams otherwise.

And I want you to believe this in your heart, as well.

As a preshow, we get two new episodes of Fraggle Rock and Muppets Mayhem, and a Bluey episode right after the main feature, as is tradition.

Tonight, it's The Secret of NIMH (1982)!

When Don Bluth, then Disney's animation director, left them to pursue higher quality cinema elsewhere he took quite a few people from their animation team along. And their first big project was this gorgeous, stylish, traditionally animated epic. Based on the "Mrs. Frisby And The Rats Of NIMH" book by Robert C. O'Brien (with various alterations), this film is a bit more complex plot-wise than the Disney adaptations of the era, but with a great cast of actors, an amazing score by Jerry Goldsmith, it's an excellent experience from start to end.

Preshows one hour before the main feature are:

One of the most hilarious episodes of The Looney Tunes Show, an animated short in the form of Chef Donald (1941), and Wallace & Gromit's A Close Shave (1995)

Alright, let's try to get this back on track. This month we will experience the best of an era when films had no dialogue, so they told stories with the most exaggerated expressions and crazy stunts, it's Silent Film month!

And we are starting with potentially the best film Buster Keaton ever acted the hell out of in his long prestigious career, it's The General (1926)

A legit action film mixed with the physical comedy Keaton was known for, it's the story of a railroad engineer who wanted to enlist during the Civil War, got rejected because of his important profession, but got thrown into the mess anyway when his girlfriend is kidnapped by the other army while stealing his train. Keaton's acrobatics and slapstick, plus all the attention to historical detail unheard at the time make this one special.

And for the preshow, we will have the neat stop-motion animated Pokemon series that Netflix just released, Pokémon Concierge.

Along with a Fraggle Rock episode as we are nearly at the end of season 1 for Back to the Rock.

So, this Saturday, January 6, on the BYOB Discord, C&D Movie Nite channel:
Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock (S1E08) starts at 23:00 UTC (3:00 pm PST / 6:00pm EST)

It was inevitable we'd arrive at Charlie Chaplin's work and here's one of the best examples of physical slapstick and deep sentimentality, weaved into one amazing film.

In all likelihood, you've seen this one before at some point. Watch it again, though! Look close at all those set-pieces, the Chaplin choreography, the emotion and the gags. So much heart in this one.

This Saturday, The Wind (1928)

I ran out of time tonight but I'll edit this post later with more info and the preshows.

Saoshyant

:hmmorks: :orks:

So, tonight is The Wind as mentioned yesterday. This is a haunting drama about a young woman stuck in the Mojave desert in what appears to be a sham marriage, and where the vicious winds slowly turn people mad. Being an entirely silent film, it brings about the drama through the expressions of both lead actors, Lillian Gish and Lars Hanson. Gish, herself, being one of the greats of the era. A woman who not only got the leading roles, pioneered new acting techniques, but also worked as a director.

This film is now in the public domain as of this year, but the original soundtrack hasn't been recovered from what I understand. I have found two copies with different soundtracks and picked the one I liked better, but even that one isn't amazing. Apparently, renowned composer Carl Davis also produced a soundtrack for it in the 70's, but the only copy of that survived is in some Spanish DVD version of the film and lol at finding that now.

Moving on, The Wind is considered one of the great films of the Silent era, telling a story that is perfect for the media. It's also ultra realistic in that it was actually filmed in the Mojave and to make the haunting winds they used airplane turbines to keep blowing up sand everywhere, so everyone who worked on this had the worst time of their life between the horrible heat and the constant windy conditions. Amazing dedication from everyone involved!

For preshows, we are doing another episode of Fraggle Rock and Pokemon Concierge, plus something really cool. In 2016, Pixar released a short, dialogue-less film (i.e. "silent") called Piper. It's amazing and you'll love it!

Tomorrow, it's classical drama time with The Nibelungs: Siegfried (1924)

Imagine if you will, it's 1924, films are silent, CGI hasn't been invented and even the whole concept of special effects is alien and strange. And here comes this mad lad, who decides to adapt this poem epic called Nibelungenlied from ancient Germany into this new art form called "cinema". Why, it's Fritz Lang, which you may remember from Metropolis we have watched before, here now to make a LOTR-sized film with 60 foot tall mechanical dragon props, characters all doing this dramatic face that sticks with you, and using a golden hue for the whole thing instead of ye old gray.

It's gonna be great!

Also, we'll be watching a short comedy from Mr Chaplin called The Idle Class (1921), a satire on the ultra rich who have more free time and money than sense, and Chaplin's tramp gets in the middle of it all when he gets mistaken for a millionaire.

And, lastly, the final episode of the gorgeous stop motion animated chill Pokemon thingy from Netflix, Pokémon Concierge.

Bring a packed dinner!

Wednesday, January 17, on the BYOB Discord, C&D Movie Nite channel:
Pokémon Concierge (S1E04) starts at 23:00 UTC (3:00 pm PST / 6:00pm EST)
The Idle Class starts at 23:30 UTC (3:30pm PST / 6:30 pm EST)
The Nibelungs: Siegfried at 00:00 UTC (4:00 pm PST / 7:00 pm EST)

Film status: long, kind of slow at times, but also epic and kickass. That dragon slaying chapter alone was worth watching even if you are in a hurry and, speaking of the dragon, BFM dug up the diagram for this monstrous prop:

Amazing!

Tonight, a quality horror film from the silent era, it's The Phantom Carriage (1921)

What foreign poster is this? Why, it's the original one from its home country in Sweden. The movie itself is based on a Swedish novel by the first woman to win the Literature Nobel Prize, Selma Lagerlöf, specifically her 1912 work "Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness!"

This is a harrowing, dystopian fairy tale about Death coming to collect the last person to die in every New Year's Eve, and condemning them to spend one year riding the phantom carriage Death uses to travel about while collecting souls. The main character, played by the director Victor Sjöström, is a serious bastard, and the movie is told from different flashbacks for his rotten life and how it's led to where he ended up, being the latest rider of the aforementioned carriage.

This film is notable for many things: its use of flashbacks and double-exposure special effects for the ghosts, its amazing use of color (in the gray era) to portray meaning and mood, and being so influential for its era that later directors like Bergman (especially) and Kubrick would often list it as one of the most important films from the silent era.

It's going to be great!

For preshows, we'll have the return of Fraggle Rock and something special: we will be doing an episode a day of the Tom Baker's Doctor Who saga "Revenge of the Cybermen" until the end of the month.

Don't miss out!

So, January 20, on the BYOB Discord, C&D Movie Nite channel:

Tonight, an aviation classic, one of the earliest war films, and the very first Oscar winner for best picture, it's Wings (1927)

There will occasionally be some clichés between the comedy and dialogue, plus the love triangle plot, but also the idolized view of the military on a movie produced by the "winning" side of WW1. It is after all a 100 year old film and one of the first of its kind.

But, more importantly, it's one of the most innovative, impressive technological films even for the upcoming decades. All those aerial dogfighting scenes with actual airplanes? Chef kiss. Add in great acting performance from its three leads and we have a winning combination.

This film was actually lost for several decades, until a single damaged copy was found. A buttload of people work on its restoration and they did an impressive work.

For preshows, we'll have one of the final Fraggle Rock episodes and the second part of the Tom Baker's Doctor Who, "Revenge of the Cybermen".

Don't miss out!

So, January 24, on the BYOB Discord, C&D Movie Nite channel:
Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock (S1E11) starts at 23:00 UTC (3:00 pm PST / 6:00pm EST)
Doctor Who: Revenge of the Cybermen (Part Two) starts at 23:30 UTC (3:30pm PST / 6:30 pm EST)
Wings at 00:00 UTC (4:00 pm PST / 7:00 pm EST)

Tonight, the penultimate pick for Silent Films month, it's the acclaimed Sunrise: A Tale of Two Humans (1927)

What starts as a scheme from an unfaithful husband to get rid of his wife for a lover he found in the Big City starts to snowball and unravel at something else. More so than any other title we have watched throughout the month, this one tells near the entirety of its story by visuals, not dialogue cards, which only appear at a few places near the start of the film and then disappear altogether.

Wikipedia posted:

Sunrise was made by F. W. Murnau, a German director who was one of the leading figures in German Expressionism, a style that uses distorted art design for symbolic effect. Murnau was invited by William Fox to make an Expressionist film in Hollywood.

The resulting film features enormous stylized sets that create an exaggerated and fairy-tale world; the city street set alone reportedly cost over US$200,000 to build and was re-used in many subsequent Fox productions, including John Ford's Four Sons (1928). Much of the exterior shooting was done at Lake Arrowhead, California.

Full of cinematic innovations, the groundbreaking cinematography (by Charles Rosher and Karl Struss) features particularly praised tracking shots. Titles appear sparingly, with long sequences of pure action and the bulk of the story told in Murnau's signature style. The extensive use of forced perspective is striking, particularly in a shot of the city with normal-sized people and sets in the foreground and smaller figures in the background by much smaller sets.

For preshows, we'll have one of the final Fraggle Rock episodes and the third part of the Tom Baker's Doctor Who, "Revenge of the Cybermen".

Wednesday, January 31, it's the end of Silent Films month and we are doing it with Charlie Chaplin's final work in the genre, Modern Times (1936)

A satire on industrialization, savage capitalism, and the dangers of automation, this also serves as Chaplin's farewell to silent film making and the little tramp character that worked so well under its confines. By 1936, the industry had long transitioned completely to "talkies", with the larger budget productions from the silent era all been produced nearly a decade before (you'll remember 1927 coming up as the year of various films we watched throughout the month).

Now, Modern Times is first and foremost a rather funny film, but also uniquely and impressively... human, which makes it timeless. Regardless of all the absurdities of the industrial life portrayed within, and the ensuing chaos caused by the main character's toiling and fighting every way through the mess of it all, there is always an expression in his face that just reaffirms his humanity every step of the way. It's the work of a true master of the craft.

For preshows, we'll have the final episodes of both Fraggle Rock and Tom Baker's Doctor Who, "Revenge of the Cybermen".

Don't go anywhere! And, as usual, if you need a Discord invite please PM our friend Manifisto.
