You had to set a specific time and location before you both set off. Then have a fallback plan in case something went wrong. If something did happen, you had to find a phone, call the other party's number and leave a message with someone, or their machine. Then they would have to realise there was an issue, find a phone, check their message and you had to hope that the message was unambiguous or achievable. Basically, I am surprised we ever managed to meet anyone other than by accident.
