Seems reasonable since he put up okay numbers last year but if he continues to improve will be a solid #1 guy. Still waiting on Olofsson’s contract... then maybe they can trade for a halfway decent defenseman?!? Yeah, 99% of the time coaches and execs don't get truly fired. You can't actually do that just because they suck. Their contracts are guaranteed too, they're just "relieved of their duties" of actually coaching/GMing/whatever and collect a paycheck at home. That's why permission is needed as pseudodragon said, and the contract with the old team ends when they sign with a new one. You could presumably mutually terminate too but who would do that? They can be fired with cause and actually end the contract though. Being bad at your job just isn't one in sports. The old boys club meant we rarely used to find out if someone was truly fired but that changed last year with all the racism and beatings.

It would be near impossible to show that anything around hockey operations can be considered sufficient to be fired with cause. Fans may disagree with moves, but unless any were done without an owner's permission somehow or displayed a fundamental misunderstanding of how the business works that's just how it goes. From an employment perspective you can't really make the case that lack of on ice success has anything to do with failure of job performance. Plus hockey operations is only a portion of a GM's job even if it's the most prominent. They're the general manager of all or a significant portion of the organization for the most part, so the business side of things is just as important to job performance. Losing hockey games doesn't really matter if the business is profitable and otherwise successful financially. It's not that teams are just old boy's clubs and want to have a half dozen old managers on the payroll as much as wanting to go a different direction isn't sufficient to void a contract (unless it was written terribly).
