The issue isn't necessarily the AAV for Pietrangelo, it's that he wants a NMC and signing bonus. Totally reasonable things to give your Cup-winning captain but Doug Armstrong is an egomaniac who Doesn't Do NMC and Bonuses so that's why he won't be back in STL. Inexcusable from the GM and I would not count on any big name free agent signing with the Blues so long as he's at the helm.

I don't know why Armstrong is waiting to make a signing or re-signing. Everybody knows Pietrangelo is gone, so might as well use that space now instead of pretending like you're gonna use it on 27.

I don't think that's the case with Steen. He was injured for the Playoffs last year (bad enough to miss the Playoffs) and was always going to be on LTIR to start the season with the team hoping he'd be ready to go sometime towards the Playoffs in '21. Sad to see him go but can't say the team won't be better off (both in terms of financials and on-ice product).
