Finishing the game with everyone else's continues
Let's Purge in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War! It's a Long Way to Borealum

That's right folks, it's time to go back to Relic Entertainment's classic 2004 Real-Time Strategy Game set in the grimdark sci-fi future galaxy of Warhammer 40,000 universe, where I'm told there is a distinct lack of peace. This game and its subsequent expansions are much beloved by mostly everyone who ever touched it, and still played by no small number of people to this day. It saw three expansions that all have new factions, new units for existing factions, and their own campaigns to play through. Its popularity stems no small part from the fact that it manages to hit all the right notes of immersing players in the perpetual conflict of the setting while delivering an extremely solid and satisfying gameplay experience.

So hello and welcome to this Let's Play of Dawn of War. I'm TheLastRoboKy and I'll be joined as always by my buddy Coolguye as I go through all of the Dawn of War campaigns in all the releases. This means we'll be doing Dawn of War, Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and yes we're going to do Soulstorm because god help me if I don't put a bolt pistol to my own nuts and fire on full auto just so I can catch “STEEL RAIN” in an episode and use it as an episode title.

So how is this going to work?

I'll be playing through all of Dawn of War myself, but for Winter Assault I'm going to split the campaign with Coolguye where one of us plays as the Order faction and the other as Disorder. After that come Dark Crusade and Soulstorm which I'll play myself, but I'll have everyone here, on Youtube and on our Discord voting for which army I'll be playing as. Once all that's done we might even organise some multiplayer games with and without mods, assuming Soulstorm doesn't crush my spirit and mangle my brain much.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War

The game that started it all, featuring four different races with their own play-styles. In Dawn of War the single-player campaign follows Gabriel Angelos, Captain of the 3rd Company of the Blood Ravens Space Marines Chapter. Fresh off of dark deeds being brought to light on his homeworld, Captain Angelos must lead his forces against an alien incursion upon the planet Tartarus, and unravel a greater mystery hidden upon this jungle world.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault

The first of three expansions for Dawn of War, Winter Assault added a new unit to each of Dawn of War's factions and added a fifth playable faction in the popular Imperial Guard. In addition to this Winter Assault had a single player campaign split into two factions, Order and Disorder. The gameplay experience of the Winter Assault campaigns plays around with restrictions and mechanics far more than its predecessor, with mixed but overall enjoyable results.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade

The second expansion for Dawn of War took things to the next level with an expansion that could be purchased as a standalone title. Two whole new factions were added to the game, the ancient machine race of the Necrons and the young upstart Tau Empire. In addition to this all existing factions received new units and balancing, and if that wasn't enough Relic introduced an entirely new campaign format to the game. Instead of a more linear narrative experience, players could pick a faction and use it to fight out against all the others on a territory-based map with persistent bases, troops and wargear.

The faction selected to demonstrate this game is the Necrons, though the Tau will be demonstrated as a matter of course once the Necron campaign is completed, in order to show off the Necron Stronghold mission.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm

The third and final expansion to Dawn of War was developed by Iron Lore, who rather unfortunately shut down due to a lack of funds for their next project as they were near the end of development. This expansion continues where Dark Crusade's ideas left off, adding another two factions and enlarging the scope of the single player campaign to cover far larger regions and tweak up the gameplay elements (more often for the worse). Soulstorm is famous for its bizarre cutscenes and dialogue, baffling design decisions and ultimately an array of bugs which unfortunately include some that make it extremely stressful to play a full campaign. For this reason, there won't be a full gameplay run of Soulstorm but instead we'll be showing off the two new factions, discussing their lore a little and then moving into looking at the extensive modding scene that exists and continues to put out content for this game.

Factions and Characters

Space Marines
Formally known as Adeptus Astartes, each Space Marine is a massive genetically enhanced warrior armed and armoured with the finest wargear available in The Imperium of Man. Traditionally formed into 1000-strong Chapters these warrior-brotherhoods specialise in lightning-fast mobile warfare, cutting the heart out of an enemy force before it has time to respond. The Dawn of War games mostly follow the Blood Raven Chapter as they wage war against the enemies of the Imperium.

Gabriel Angelos (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War)
As the Captain of the Blood Ravens 3rd Company, Gabriel Angelos is a Space Marine who stands above his genetically enhanced warrior-brothers for his strength, skill and tactical acumen. With this standing comes greater responsibility, and it rests heavily upon his shoulders as he comes to Tartarus in the wake of a great incident on his homeworld of Cyrene. Lacking the zealot-like behaviour often seen in Adeptus Astartes he is nonetheless dogged in his duty to The Imperium of Man and will not shirk in the face of his duty, regardless of who or what stands before him.

Isador Akios (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War)
In a Space Marine Chapter a Librarian is a battle-brother who possesses psychic powers, and they are typically utilised in the role of advisors and information gatherers. Isador Akios is a Librarian who has known and fought alongside Gabriel Angelos for a very long time, matching his Captain's measured approach to war with a more aggressive and direct stance. In combat the Librarian uses his psychic powers as a tremendous weapon, able to smash aside his enemies with raw energy or reach into their minds and crush their will to fight.

Chaplain Varnus (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault)
The Imperial effort upon Lorn V is not solely made up of the Guard, and so important is the Titan Dominatus frozen upon its surface that a force from the honoured first-founding Chapter of the Ultramarines have arrived to lend their aid. Tasked with protecting the crew intended to restore and pilot the Titan, Varnus fights with a fury and faith that sweeps his battle-brothers up in its wake, allowing them to perform tremendous feats in spite of their small number.

Davian Thule (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade)
When the Blood Ravens arrived in great force to the planet Kronus, it was the Captain of the 4th Company who was selected to be the Force Commander. Captain Thule's mission entails not merely the removal of all the enemies of mankind from the planet, but the protection of sacred relics found in the northern regions of the main landmass.

Imperial Guard
If Space Marines are the hammer, then it is the Astra Militarum that are the anvil that the enemies of the Imperium are crushed against. Drawn from the general populations from almost every single planet in the galaxy-wide empire, the humble Imperial Guardsman marches to war backed by a war machine of unfathomable size.

Colonel Carus Brom (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War)
As the Ork horde bore down upon the cities of Tartarus it was Colonel Brom who tried to lead his Planetary Defence Force soldiers to protect the capital of Magna Bonum and its surrounding assets. Though Brom himself is a man of great courage and discipline the same could not be said of the men under his command, and due to their failure to adequately fend off the Orks he seeks a moment of redemption with the Blood Ravens, willing to defer all orders to Captain Angelos in order to get his chance.

General Sturnn (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault)
The commander of the 412th Cadian Regiment is a hard and fearless man raised on war and educated in strife, wise in the ways of war but not jaded by the heavy weight of his duty. He leads his equally hardened Guardsmen into a battle all but certain to kill a great many of them, yet he does so from the front and fights upon the ice world of Lorn V to serve as an inspiration to all his men. For Sturnn and his men there is no retreat, and their lives are ready to be sold in order to secure the buried prize upon the frozen world.

Lukas Alexander (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade)
In the wake of the attempt to recover the Titan on Lorn V, an Imperial pursuit force was dispatched to hunt down the Eldar Farseer Taldeer and bring her to justice for her actions there. When this force arrived at Kronus and reported the large-scale conflict upon its service, the Militarum Command changed their orders. The planet of Kronus was to be conquered and returned to the Imperial fold, with the Imperial Guard pursuit force reassigned to be Kronus' planetary defence force, and their leader General Lukas Alexander granted the authority of Planetary Governor-Militant.

Agents of the Emperor
As the Imperium wages an endless war across its vast holdings, there is a need for those who look inwards to ensure that subversion and heresy do not spring forth and leave vital military forces strangled for resources or cut off from assistance. For these tasks where a scalpel is required, the Imperium of Man has many individuals capable of acting in its interests.

Inquisitor Mordecai Toth (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War)
As an agent of the Immortal Emperor, an Inquisitor has nearly unfettered to locations access across the Imperium forbidden to most, and can even martial resources in an instant with an order that would take decades or even centuries through normal channels. Though an Inquisitor's primary task is rooting out corruption within the Imperium, Toth seems preoccupied with an evacuation of the planet, and strives to convince Gabriel Angelos and the Blood Ravens to leave Tartarus sooner rather than later.

Orks
Of all the external threats that face The Imperium of Man there is none more direct and obvious than that of the greenskin hordes known as Orks. These hulking brutes revel in violence and war in all its forms, their guns thundering inaccurately and their ramshackle vehicles belching smoke onto the horizon to signal their coming. Once established on a planet Orks are almost impossible to remove, as they shed spores that breed no only more of their own kind but also the necessary components of their eco-systems that allow them to thrive and concentrate on waging war on whomever they encounter.

Gorgutz 'Eadtaker (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault) (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade)
It is common knowledge amongst all soldiers of the Imperium that the Ork hierarchy is denoted by the size and strength of its leaders, and thus the commander of an Ork army is typically the largest and most savage of his kind. Few like to ponder that this constant struggle for dominance over their rivals can breed within these Warbosses a very cunning mind. One such terrifying prospect made manifest is Warboss Gorgutz, a hulking brute in appearance with a (relatively) sharp mind. What makes Gorgutz so effective as a leader is his understanding of the nature of Orks, able to leverage the strengths and weaknesses not only of their physical traits but their mental ones as well as he leads them into battle.

Lorn V was not the end of the adventures of Warboss Gorgutz, and his arrival upon Kronus has stirred the native rival clans to unite and agitate. What were once seen as mere 'feral' Orks now surge forth from the south-western jungles of Kronus armed to the teeth and united in purpose. WAAAAAGH GORGUTZ!

Craftworld Eldar
Before mankind came to rule the stars, the ascendant race were the long-lived Eldar. Possessed of powerful weapons and a method of travelling the galaxy swiftly known as the Webway, there was little they needed to fear and soon their race fell into decadence. So profound was their psychic ability and so deep their capacity for obsession their pursuit of self-indulgence birthed the Eye of Terror as a gateway between real-space and the warp, and worse still created a god-entity that craved their souls. Those that saw this fall coming fled aboard vast colony-vessels known as Craftworlds and seek to temper themselves so that their obsession does not lead them down the path to destruction ever again. Little has changed of their arrogance however, and while they would willingly work with other races towards common goals, all their actions exist as manipulations of fate to prevent their own demise.

Farseer Macha (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War)
The Eldar are a people whose existence teeters on the edge of an abyss, a hungry maw waiting within to devour their very souls should they topple. As a result of this they rely on those amongst them with psychic gifts and the power of future-sight known as Farseers, in order to guide them away from danger and ruin. Amongst the Eldar those of the Biel-Tan Craftworld are the most aggressive, and as such when danger is located they would instead seek to wipe out the threat rather than avoid or negotiate with it. This is why Farseer Macha has come to Tartarus, to ensure that those searching for the planet's secrets are driven away by force or slain lest their fumblings bring a fell ruin to her people in a future only she can see.

Farseer Taldeer (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault) (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade)
Often do the Eldar of the Craftworlds consider themselves to be the true protectors of the galaxy against the forces that would destroy it, thinking little of the other races that face the same foes as they. Farseer Taldeer of the Craftworld Ulthwe comes to Lorn V with a similar sentiment, having seen the weave of fate and future and found a terrifying doom rising up against her people, and being resolved to stopping it herself. Yet this task is not so easily completed on a planet overrun with Orks and worshippers of the Ruinous Powers, thus her small cadre weaves through the shadows of the world and secretly aids the Imperial Guard in their efforts so that the Farseer may get the opportunity to enact her plan.

Uncaring of the Imperial anger after her actions upon Lorn V, Farseer Taldeer's visions of doom guided her to the planet of Kronus where conflict had already roused her ancient enemy from its slumber. Desperate to ensure that the Necrons of Kronus did not have a chance to spread their misery off-world, the Eldar leader resolved to lead her people through whatever and whomever stood between her and her prey.

Chaos Space Marines
During the founding days of The Imperium Space Marines were organised into legions that marched behind the sons of the Emperor, powerful demi-gods that were truly larger than life. Yet some of these so-called Primarchs turned against their father in a conflict known as the Horus Heresy, and when defeated fled for a gaping hole in reality known as the Eye of Terror. Embittered by their defeat they have turned to servitude of the malevolent entities that reside within the Eye, that they will return to Terra one day and exact their vengeance for a defeat that happened a millenia past.

Bale (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War)
Though the Chaos Space Marines of the Alpha Legion are known for their subversive and subtle behaviours, the Chaos Lord known as Bale appears to possess very little of these traits. Aggressive and ambitious, Bale seemingly resents the way his forces act in the shadows of Tartarus but does so in order to achieve his dark goals and bring about more glory to the dark gods of the Ruinous Powers.

Sindri Myr (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War)
A Chaos Sorceror is an individual who has managed to attain a great deal of unholy power through almost byzantine contracts and deals with fell creatures of the warp, and as a result there is very little the Chaos Space Marine known as Sindri cannot talk others into. With promises of power and words arranged in just the way the listener desires, he manipulates others around him into reaching his goal. His style of work seems far more suited to the secretive Alpha Legion, and yet there is no assurance that his goals align with those of his lord, or of the forces he fights alongside.

Crull (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault)
The World Eaters are a shattered legion of bloodshed worshipping berserkers who pile up skulls in the name of their war-mongering Chaos God Khorne, and it is a rare occurrence indeed to see them in large enough numbers to create their own warband. Yet upon Lorn V a violent and unstable Chaos Champion known as Crull has succeeded, in spite of the fact that the very weather of the planet interferes in their war-making against the Greenskin forces. In all he does Crull seeks the favour of the Blood God, and the arrival of the Imperial Guard reveals to him a means to this disturbing end.

Eliphas the Inheritor (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade)
The Chaos Space Marines of the Word Bearers treat the worship of Chaos Gods as a true religion, one that they would spread across the galaxy through preaching and temple-building, and should that fail through daemon fire and roaring boltgun. When the alien-oppressed humans in Kronus' south-eastern reaches cried out for salvation, a great rift in reality was torn open, and from it surged the Word Bearers, with the charismatic Eliphas at their head. All across the planet are opportunities for dark rituals that the Inheritor may perform to please his many masters, and should they be satisfied with his efforts he may gain the apotheosis all true champions of Chaos seek.

Necrons
For centuries heaped upon centuries, a foe only remembered by faded Eldar legends has slept beneath the feet of all living races in the galaxy. Long ago a race known as the Necrontyr forsook their flesh and their souls for digital immortality in durable machine-forms, and at the behest of star-devouring masters waged war till their enemies. When those enemies and their masters were defeated the Necrons cast themselves into a deep slumber below the earth of uncounted worlds, one which they awaken from as fools disturb them. Now the Necrons seek to reclaim an empire lost, and scour the usurpers from their lands with technology still far in advance of what all else possess.

The Necron Lord of Kronus (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade)
A small group of human explorers paid a heavy price for disturbing sunken tombs on Kronus, and now the Necron Lord in charge of the planet marshals its forces and strikes out against the living that war across the surface of its world. The Lord of Kronus draws upon the might and method of the C'tan known as the Nightbringer, a being that expunges all life and seeks naught but a silent galaxy in its wake of its heedless hunger.

Tomas Macabee (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade)
Of those who disturbed the rest of the Necrons of Kronus, only the chief of the exploration team was spared death. Yet the man that was Tomas was scarcely recognisable beneath the form-fitting exoskeleton that encased him. Though the Necrons of Kronus themselves did not speak at all, their human thrall would often act as their herald, promising an end to all that lived upon the surface of the planet.

Tau Empire
While they are a young empire of short-lived xenos, the Tau are nonetheless making waves amongst the older galactic factions through their rapid development. With every generation the Tau expand their borders, advance their technology, and win the alliance of other xenos species they encounter with an idea of unit of purpose called “The Greater Good”. In war their forces operate by clearly defined but incredibly flexible doctrines, with their ranged weaponry providing battlefield supremacy whilst auxiliaries made up of their allies and drone systems make up for any tactical deficiencies.

Shas'O Kais (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade)
With their world beset on all sides by numerous dangerous enemies, the Tau Empire responded by sending a sizable strike-force led by some of its most capable warriors to ensure it was not conquered. Leading this effort is Kais, a student of the legendary Puretide whose teachings form the fundamentals of all Tau warfare. A firm believer in the Tau creed of The Greater Good Kais cares deeply for every life under his command, and is not afraid to extend compassionate terms towards his enemies either. If forced to fight however he would be a sight to behold, were it not for his custom suit allowing him to hunt his enemies down and slay them before they even aware of his presence.

Aun'El Shi'Ores (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade)
Though the Shas'O leads the Tau forces to protect their people upon Kronus, it is the task of Ethereals such as Aun'El to protect their souls and maintain their purity of purpose. Obeyed almost without question by all other Tau, the Ethereals give an incredible strength of will and near unbreakable morale. Yet should he fall, the entire war effort collapse rapidly afterwards.

The autocannon is an autocannon, it fires Armour (this is 40k thus british.) piercing rounds of large size at a rapid rate. The heavy bolter fires armour piercing rounds of a small size at a very rapid rate.

The tricky thing is that depending on your source, the thing called an autocannon isn't fully automatic. And it very likely doesn't fire shells. Both of which are required for the standard definition of an autocannon, and both of which are technically fulfilled by every mention of a heavy bolter. What can I say, 40K is extensive and contradictory and goofy.

I probably should have been more specific in that the Planetary Defense Forces, their equipment and their training are a matter for the individual Planetary Governor and not the Imperium, which is why you tend to see them being less well equipped and trained for the most part (because of more limited resources). Also narrative tends to make them a speed-bump because no story is very interesting if it opens with a successful firing of planetary defense batteries completely wiping out the encroaching invaders.

I think the only part I'd disagree somewhat on is the training considering some Guard tithes take them from the PDF. Admittedly the cream of the crop but still the PDF so I'd reckon a lot of them are solidly trained.

While they don't really stand a chance against a concerted invasion and are partially there to be able to hold out until Guard/Marine reinforcements arrive they are, to my knowledge, pretty capable at fending of occasional pirate attacks or deal with minor uprisings.
Problem as I see it, is that "PDF are weak and useless" has been such a reoccurring narrative device in the setting that it's almost the norm when that's not always the case. Something I know the Ciaphas Cain books makes several remarks about.

A major problem for the PDF is definitely their lack of equipment compared with Guard armies. Whenever the PDF has been given rules it's usually just a bunch of restrictions on what they can take, with maybe a special rule and a unit or two to make up for it.

Oh I remember that one. Second thing I can remember is that some of the unit lines were way too long.

Like someone mentioned earlier if the PDF succeeds theres no story to be told. Orks dont make planetfall and theres no combat on the surface.

Somebody call for an ant?

Eh, you can tell the story of how most of the bad guys dont make it down and then the pdf has to tak down the remainder that have them heavily outgunned. Or a million other stories. They just have to be small scale and not galaxy being threatened scale.
