The Walrus correctly guessed fifteen of the sixteen playoff teams. The Warriors ruined his shot at perfection.

Warriors haters missed a golden opportunity to select them as the team with the worst WP%. Not one voter did but there's always next year.

Nobody had the Heat losing in the finals.

Well drat, I'd have never expected to be above the mean, let alone way up there.

Thanks for all the organizing (and informative posting to boot) Zogo!

Blast. I didn't get a chance to humiliate myself this year. I didn't see a thread, though. Was this poll done inside a larger thread?

IIRC Zogo typically posted it within the then-open NBA N/V thread. So the 2019 Off-season thread I reckon?

Also, glad to see someone joined me in voting The Witness!

One time I got too drunk at a Christmas party and ended up telling a professional artist/professor why pop art is overrated and devoid of affect. He said that was a fine opinion to have, as not all art is for everyone. I then told him it wasn't an opinion but the actual Truth and that these wishy washy aesthetics were bullshit and a rip off of early Dada. I saw him at the same party a year later and he oddly avoided me.

Took a couple of reads before my brain didn't auto-replace pop art with pop dog

You're a genius. I was thinking about half of that. It's amazing how the NBA has so many dominoes that cascade into the future.

Makes me wonder: what is the smallest (in terms of WS) "hypothetical domino" that would have caused a seismic talent and championship shift, where the domino was an FA choosing another option or an player staying healthier as per the Brooks example.

Like, did some otherwise unremarkable player go scorching hot (like Jeremy Lin in NY) for a few weeks, propel their team into the playoffs and then upset some veteran team which prompted them to overhaul their roster and staff?

Most recent example I can think of along these lines is from the NFL last year. I'm sure most know the details, but just in case:

Miami began 0-7 and were in contention for Worst Team Ever while the Pats were cruising to another division title. Dolphins gel and pick up a few wins before the finale versus the then-2nd-seed Pats. Down a score with seconds to go they pulled off a remarkable multiple lateral TD to win, thus knocking the Pats down to 3rd and lifting the Chiefs into a bye.

Instead of a week off resting on Wild Card weekend, New England slogs through an ugly game and loses to Tennessee. Brady's final throw is an pick-six. He signs in Tampa 2 months later.

Tennessee then bumps off #1 Baltimore. This means K.C. can stay at Arrowhead for the conference championship. A potential 3-game gauntlet with 1, probably 2, road games became a pair of home games as heavy favorites, and all due to a plucky Dolphins squad and a fluke lateral play.

Now that I think about it, this is pretty much exactly what SB Nation does with "Rewind" yeah. Stuff like what was the catalyst for Shaq leaving Orlando and whatnot?

Clippers history maybe completely different if Josh Smith and Corey Brewer don't rain down all those 3s against them. And depending on how they fair against GSW, that dynasty may have never gotten started.

These two are quite good. The performance of a few notable-but-not-star players in a particular quarter dramatically altered the trajectories of the rosters and results of the top half of the Western Conference.

That being said, made/missed shots aren't under the control of the player, whereas

The biggest domino is Anthony Carter.

By not filing his contract paperwork on time for his player option, the Heat were able to get him off the books and free up cap space to sign Lamar Odom. Lamar Odom was the trades to the Lakers for Shaq in '05, which led to the Heat winning the title in '06.

Without the Heat winning in '06, who knows if the Big Three would have banded together.

Totally forgot Lamar also helped the Lakers and Kobe win 2 more championships.

This is a phenomenal tiny domino => long series of massive dominoes scenario. Thanks for the knowledge Strawberry. =)

Capitalism yada yada but man the IOC and FIFA and other international sports orgs should just shift everything back 2 full years (or longer if no vaccine).

Run the Summer games in 2022, 26, etc. Winter shifts as well, and other events follow suit. Trying to shorten gaps and squeeze things in to "resume the original plan" will only end in financial and health disasters.

Also - he may well suck, but it seems odd to me that people here are so down on him for being poorer than the other owners. A weird vibe given the politics of the thread.

I imagine it's not his actual broke-ness that is attracting the derision but something else?

Pretty sure he (via his many enterprises) was cutting staff and benefits and whatnot as early as mid-March. A lot of scummy stuff came out in bits and pieces over the summer.

Billionaire Tilman Fertitta claims he laid off 45,000 workers quickly as a ‘favor’

By Lee Brown
April 12, 2020 | 1:47pm

Billionaire Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta said he was doing fine after laying off 45,000 employees — claiming he was doing them a “favor.”
“I’m holding up pretty drat good,” the Texas mogul who is said by Forbes to be worth $4.8 billion told Fox News Saturday.

“But I’ve got 45,000 employees out there that we’ve had to furlough which is so tremendously unfortunate,” he said.

Fertitta — who also owns restaurants and casinos — said he learned from previous financial crashes to not hold off cutting jobs.

“You’re doing your people a favor if you get them furloughed first, because you have them first to the unemployment line after the severance that you give them. It’s a trick that I learned many years ago,” he insisted.

Watching Curry evolve and develop and then truly break out during the first Kerr year was fantastic to watch. Even 2015-6 was alright, they were dominant throughout the season but the 73-win chase was intriguing and they had some thrilling close games like the OT win vs OKC with Curry hitting a 38-footer.

But eventually the accumulation of what others already mentioned, plus general Warriors fatigue, plus Draymond's nut-seeking kickouts, and especially the oblivious ownership (goddamn remember when they broke ground on the new arena, what a shitshow) made it unpleasant to root for Curry.

Klay and Kerr still own though, it's really awful that they had to suffer the worst injuries and surgeries of the whole crew.
