I like how they pointed out how magic is just used to recreate the modern world but worse. Time travel is used to take more classes. Teleportation is used to get to work on time. Magical beings are more minorities to be racist about. Magic items are more consumer products to buy.

Which is kinda proof to me that if you make media people like there is no limit to what they'll try to cover for you. The racism important to the wealthy Death Eaters because it was a tool to maintain power, just like Voldemort. So anyway, Dumbledore was fully aware of the type of asset he was recruiting with Voldemort and sent Harry to grow up in abusive household to become the replacement.

The Harry Potter series is funny because the first book is a fine children’s book but Rowling immediately got sick of writing children’s books so they become all politics and weird magic rules to justify those politics.

It is an interesting thing in science fiction where getting too close to an uncomfortable truth about the real world causes the cognitive restructuring to cope with it to become text. Sci fi tropes like time travel and alternate universes are the writer’s mind sliding around events and causality to find a comforting version of the world even if that version is impossible and absurd.

Bioshock Infinite is fascinating because you can watch the narrative just fly apart as it approaches uncomfortable truth. The old timey racism is okay. It lets liberals feel like good people for rejecting it. But the cartoony depictions of racism aren’t insightful. They focus on how this particular strain of racism is uncool and out of date. The rejection is more about ascetics than morals. The game tries the same over the top parody of capitalism but it can’t. The horror of capitalism is that no extreme is too extreme. It is a system in a feedback loop. Once the narrative has actual connections to people’s real lives then it is time to disengage and go into excuse mode. If there are infinite realities then nothing matters. The game has entered the mental realm of the liberal. Anything is permissible if you can imagine a world were it is permissible. As a liberal, you immediately start murdering leftists.

Everyone feels uncomfortable about how such a small amount of effort can make such a huge improvement in people’s lives. Everyone also feels uncomfortable that people’s suffering was so directly monetizable. The solution is to actually fix the problems. Any of them. There’s so many.
