I’m noticing that a lot of the featured scenes are with service employees, which kind of makes me wonder if they’re people put in the situation of having to appear in the segment because the management agreed to have the business featured in whatever movie they thought was being made. If so, that’s kind of lovely. The dynamic seems pretty different from the scenes with the pro-life “clinic” and the debutants. Maybe I’m giving Texas too much credit.

I’m a little disappointed that Giuliani really was just tucking his shirt back in. I have to agree that the woman playing Borat’s daughter is amazing. She has the absolute shamelessness and willingness to do anything for a bit that Cohen does. She grabbed Giuliani’s loving dick!. Truly amazing stuff.

I don’t like poo poo like the part with the holocaust survivors. The whole point of the character is to make bigots feel safe to be their true selves on film. Those sweet old ladies don’t need to be subjected to cartoonish antisemitism, and it reveals nothing because Cohen’s cartoonish antisemitism is indistinguishable from the real thing and they’ve endured a lifetime of it living in loving Texas. Of course they can’t see through it: you can’t reduce the absurd to absurdity. It’s cruel.

Yeah, it's worth remembering that he is actually Jewish (and indeed some of the "Kazakh" language he speaks in the film is Hebrew), and there's basically zero way he would have done that scene without those ladies being in on it. He's not an rear end in a top hat in real life, he only fucks with people who deserve it.

The film was amazing, definitely stronger than the first one both in terms of the laughs and the way everything fit into a cohesive plot.

The couple who ran the bed and breakfast in the first one had no idea what was really going on. They thought he and the Azamat guy were making porn. Maybe they came clean after getting the footage, which they obviously don’t do with the racists.

The stuff with the fax machine guy is completely pointless because the guy has to be in on it, and his presence doesn’t add anything beyond plot, which is pointless in a movie like this.

Yeah I don't know how anyone doesn't get they're in on it. He walks in as the most ridiculous antisemitic caricature and they just say oh hello. I'm still seeing people on Twitter acting like they were the butt of the joke rather than antisemites being the ones being mocked.

Agreed on both counts. It's been a while since a movie got me to laugh out loud while I was watching it alone and there were a couple bits that got me.

It seems like most of the people in both movies have an understanding that they’re participating in some kind of media interview. They’re obviously sitting there waiting for a media crew and an interview. What’s not clear is what they’re expecting or what Cohen has told them beforehand. I agree that the old ladies there know that he’s not serious because otherwise they’d be calling the cops or running the hell out of there.

The original film is one of my all-time favorite theater experiences. I went to see it alone, and the shifting atmospheres of tense discomfort and cathartic release were more palpable than I’ve seen anywhere. The laughter at the bear was incredible because it discharged all the uncertainty and horror at either the frat boys in the van or the rodeo guy who wants to exterminate all gay people—I don’t remember the order of the scenes any more.

That seems like it should have been in the movie. Were those nazis? Did they recognize him or just think he was Jewish?

I’m sure they told her it was a reality show, which could easily have a full crew, lighting, etc.

The movie’s funny, but Cohen exploits people to make his movies and profits from their labor. If they’re not chud mutants they should be compensated in scale with the profits created by the movie.

I’d blame 20 years of reality tv priming people to believe that they’re basically just improvising dramatic fiction once they’re in front of the camera. The ethos of unscripted television is “just go with it.”—you can tell she doesn’t believe what she’s seeing but is rolling with it to keep the show going. She might have even been given an outline of how the scenes should go.

I’m sure she didn’t believe the reality of what was happening and that she isn’t a “professional babysitter” but that they put out an ad for locals to be on television or in an unscripted film and she either needed the money or wanted fame.

If you were running a daycare and a dude dumped a woman in chains at your door, you’d call CPS or the cops immediately, yeah? Even an ignorant person would know to do that.
