I drove through Gary back in 2007 out of a morbid curiosity. The memory that most stands out was a sign about water quality and a community meeting, and as I kept driving down that street, a burnt out house with plywood over what used to be a bay window with the words “Why?” And “Who is doing this?” spray painted by someone. I bought the cheapest coolest fireworks on the way back to the interstate. Like, a big trash bag full of all kinds. Roman candles with report, big ropes of poppers, M-80s, at least a couple thousand bottle rockets, snakes... god drat I gotta go back there.
