My last anime viewing was JoJo and it was the episode where Jotaro defeats the gambler by psyching him out so badly that he faints. Was very entertaining. Quality anime imo. Looks like tonight they're fighting a magic bird or something based on the preview cap. Meme Poker Party fucked around with this message at 03:51 on Nov 3, 2020 |

Why is anime the way it is? It's so unnatural. People don't talk like that. People pretending to be people don't talk like that.

is this preview meant to be appealing to people? edit: I'm honestly asking because based on the preview I have zero idea what this is meant to be about aside from some vaguely trite philosophical platitudes and a couple visually startling scenes maybe an obscured message about nature? I'm not convinced that any of it will be compelling, or at the very least cogent. It is extremely low-key, quiet and mellow, presenting a series of episodic fable-like stories only connected by the main character coming in to gently help out with supernatural problems. Humanistic and environmental themes throughout. Definitely not for everyone but very highly regarded and awarded–usually described in terms like "hauntingly beautiful".

I'm in here genuinely giving things a go but this sounds like it could end up in the "overwrought, overthought, muddled, no story to speak-of, anime" basket". To call something "a series of episodic stories" is just to say that its disjointed. Most narratives are a series of episodic stories. I will give it a try as ive got a lot of time on my hands, but I'm skeptical to be sure.

The mushishi episode with the groundhogs day cave monster is pretty spooky. I liked that one and the 'person who can't feel cold' ones the best I think

I have a really hard time getting into animes because by the 5th episode the main character finally meets up with bad guy, and just as he is about to defeat him the bad guy has some invincible amazing power that no one ever knew about but reveal it in such a way it just makes you angry instead of excited to see what happens next so I turn it off. However, one series I absolutely loved lately was Hunter x Hunter. Totally blew me away. It has 140ish 24minute episodes and somehow I binged them all in a week. (HULU & Netflix have the first few seasons) I've never gotten that hooked on any anime ever. Maybe season 1 of One Punch Man, but that was a short series. (Season 2 I made it to episode 3 before stopping because it was bad) Anyways, it has so many interesting and badass characters that some pop up at different times making a lot of heck yeah moments. The entire Zoldyck family was cool as hell. Philthy fucked around with this message at 15:50 on Nov 3, 2020 |

If you don't want to watch the whole thing, at least watch the second episode because that was what got me hooked on it. I was kind of iffy with the first, but that one got me.

Yeah, I liked mushi-shi as well. It is a little dry but I enjoy the concept. One that is similar with yokai but is a bit more fun would be Natsume's Book of Friends. It has an arc but is still episodic too. Some of my favorite, more down-to-earth animes would be Usagi Drop - About a 30ish yo man taking in a young child of a deceased relative (Technically his aunt I think). Some sad moments, a little too idyllic in some areas but still a charming little watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlWk-96JHz4 Kids on the Slope - About a group of teens who love Jazz, a love triangle kind of and the main character being an rear end in a top hat and growing up. It's actually a nice story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7plEDcWy0Oc Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō - Really, the manga is better but if anyone likes a nice peaceful anime about the actual end of humanity, this is the one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbxcNB9k9z8

I'm not sure if there's a reveal in the manga but I get the feeling that the author has no idea what would be interesting enough to have as a reveal and thus never has one.

UnfurledSails posted:if you watch one anime in your life it should be Hunter x Hunter imo I saw that on Netflix. It was really weird, inconsistent, and seemed to have no idea what it's about or who it's for. Is it supposed to be an innocent coming of age story about a ten year old boy who "fights" with a fishing rod, or is it supposed to be a hyper violent tale of roided out weirdos biting chunks out of people's skulls, and a recurring antagonist pervert who acts like, to him, fighting and sex are the same thing? Really bad "Best Anime Ever". Maybe even worse than Attack on Titan. At least there I knew what it was going for (it just did it badly).

Hunter X Hunter kicks rear end actually. The mashup of genres and tones is a lot of fun and the animation is great. Its a shitload better than Attack on Titan, which sucks.

Air Gear is dumb fun. Acca 13 Territory Inspection Department is good. Planetes is good. Carole and Tuesday as well as Beck are good. I like the world of Blood Blockade Battlefront but felt it dragged at the end. Yakitate has bread. Hikaru No Go is about Go. The fact is there's so much anime out there you could probably find something for anyone. Hating anime is like hating books, or hating anything live action, like it's just so broad it's very unlikely you can't find something you'd like.
