I used to watch a lot of anime in the late 80/early 90s when the stuff available was mostly just 90 minute or less films. I've tried watching some series stuff but for the most part they're all overly long with too much naff teen drama in them that I have no interest in.

Space Dandy - journeys of a sex-haven’t

Watched like 10 minutes

Pros- had pretty moving colors

Cons-I think this is just a porn, didn’t watch past guy arriving at boob planet

I did however enjoy Dandy, it's definitely very silly and him being a horndog constantly backfires Johnny Bravo style but there's actually some pretty cool stories in there and I enjoyed that it doesn't take itself at all seriously and pokes fun at various other genres. Watch episodes 2, 4 and 6 if it still doesn't click, it was never meant to.

Evangelion is responsible for a lot of anime having the now stereotypical whiny teen protagonist and is consequently why a lot of anime sucks rear end these days.

The EVAs are cool though.

The only draw are the EVAs and the weirdo angels, everything else can be ignored and you miss nothing of worth (this goes for a whole chunk of anime though).

Attack on Titan got massive goon praise so I watched it, the premise of giants who appear from nowhere and feast on humans so humanity locked itself away behind huge fortified city walls was kinda cool. The clips from the show were all action packed so it seemed like a good idea to watch it. It's 25 episodes long, as the series goes on the pre-episode recaps get longer and longer and longer to the point where the later ones are pretty much half an episode of recap. That's not the worst of it though, it suffers from the same problem as Evangelion does, the whiny teen protagonist and his gang of anime trope stereotype friends. So in those 25 episodes, each being roughly 23 minute long there's a total of about 22 minutes of action. 22! The other 553+ minutes of the first series is all teen angst and recaps (plus minute and a half of singalong theme tune which isn't even catchy).

There's definitely an interesting mental element with anime viewers, the desire to watch something different that normies do but the inability to discern what's actually good means they inhale a lot of terrible stuff.

I watch some of JoJo's Bizarre Adventures last night. It's a good show imo. Quality anime. And throughout the whole thing so far (I'm halfway through Stardust Crusaders) there has been very little horny to speak of and no weird stuff with schoolgirls.

Watch JoJo.

I didn't quite know how to take it at first, it was insanely silly yet seemed to be playing it perfectly straight and then started to lean into the stupidity as it went on. I don't love it but it's certainly entertaining.

I need to pick up JoJo again, the last episode I saw was where the new york guy broke into the secret nazi lab where they had just lost control of the ancient vampire they had resurrected

That's the rear end in a top hat JoJo who knows everyone's next move and tells them what they're going to say next is it not? It's an amusing bit.

The only good anime is Redline because it's like wacky races but with cocaine and a good soundtrack

Redline blew me away from a technical standpoint because it looked like every single frame was hand drawn each time? An absolutely insane amount of effort and love went into making that film. 7 years in the making or something? Wild. And yeah, it's pretty loving cool too.

I think Akira is worth watching, I think mostly because it visually quite beautiful, the plot is a pile of deep sounding nonsense though.

Akira is fantastic animation-wise but suffers from being condensed down from 6 really huge comic tomes each being something like 600 pages apiece. Amazing it's as coherent as it is, really. It's flawed story wise but visually it's still a stand out and worth watching for that alone so you know where so much modern media stole ideas from.

Which is why everyone should just watch the anime OVAs and movies from the 80s and 90s. They're short, have money to spend on fancy animation bits, paper thin story as an excuse to be excessively violent.

Cyber City Oedo 808 is a stone cold classic. 3 very cool main characters each with a single hour long at best story. I'm honestly amazed Hollywood still hasn't stolen the concept and done something with it. It would invariably suck but maybe it would get more people to watch the original which owns so, so much. The people doing the dub must have had so much fun, some of the lines are hilarious.

Hollywood has literally no idea what to do with anime, the only reason Speed Racer and Alita came out remotely coherent is because the former was clearly the Wachowskis having a fuckload of fun with it and the later is James Cameron's pet project. Otherwise you get things like Dragon Ball Evolution. The Last Airbender as an honorary mention, too. It's not even just disrespect or condescension, but seems to be complete incomprehension.

poo poo, even Ghost in the Shell which LOOKED cool as gently caress in terms of style choice but ultimately was worse than the anime in terms of action when the vast majority of it was just a copy. Like the chase scene which ends with the fight in the weird open square knee deep in water between the buildings overlooking the cityscape. It's an iconic action scene and it doesn't look as good as the animation. And the end scene with the tank just didn't have the same sort of weight to it. The source material was already there and somehow they made it worse?

I adore Speed Racer, it does something very cool in terms of style and becomes something very much itself which is hard to do in this day and age. Pity nobody saw it for what it was back then, I'm glad it gets a bit more love these days though.

Alita was another one, it was a decent film but I dunno, the talent is quite clearly there in terms of designers but none of the characters looked as cool as the anime versions. The comic/anime Alita is just so wonderfully stylised art wise that changing it to look realistic but with some robot bits just felt a bit weak when it's virtually all CG anyway. At least the action in it was decent compared to Ghost, again it wasn't as stylised as I was hoping it would be considering the source but it was pretty solid at least. Hopefully a sequel gets made.
