is it a bourgeois waste of surplus labor or is it an important area of scientific research?

in general, i think modern leftism's relationship with bourgeois science is cautious at best. but of course every nerd wants to see cool sci-fi poo poo so the appeal of space science is impossible to ignore.

of course, american space travel is heavily propagandized and prominently features heroes from the US military (john glenn, neil armstrong, etc.). the classic apollo-era space program is very much a product of pro-american cold war propaganda, and you don't have to dig deep to find the anti-communist underpinnings of NASA at the time

nowadays, space travel is also becoming commercialized with spacex and all that too

so anyways, what does cspam think? in your ideal america, would space exploration be funded?

its good but not as some sort of "well we hosed up this planet lets find a new one so those rich enough to leave can start over again"

because thats bad. and also dumb. said by morons. idiots. if you dont think we can't even fix the earth which is like loving good as hell for sustaining life why do you think we can make mars livable?

space is also probably good for like, getting resources and poo poo which could lead to like post scarcity or soething? is that the right word? I dont know much about leftism. only read manga.

we've got quite a few problems to solve before we can adequately start any real exploration of space again, such as avoiding Kessler syndrome and shielding components and compartments against the ionizing radiation of the Sun

so, basically, clearing out the trash floating around in the upper atmosphere and figuring out how to leave the magnetosphere without being completely fried in the process

I really love the exploration part of it.

I wanna see whats out there, I wanna see whats on Titan, and Europa

I wanna build bigger and better scopes and radios

I wanna find aliens, even long dead ones.

It's just bullshit OP. If space existed, then there would naturally be a desire to explore it. that would be human. And so, knowing that we are trapped by the firmament, and knowing that the existence of the firmament by itself disproves modern science, which shows the degree to which Satan has gained control over our institutions, the UN and world governments work together to maintain the charade of space.

In the end, G-d and the truth will win

Space exploration is expensive and requires long term planning. Right now everything is falling apart on Earth, maybe some future civilisation will give it a shot though.

More to the topic, it's historically been something of a nationalist distraction, but I could see it being harnessed for good to promote science and education. There's few things kids love more than space and dinosaurs.

But there will always be a cynical, exploitative element under our current economic system.

Just to add, space exploration is rather inexpensive, and killing NASA tomorrow won't see any of that money end in the hands of the poor.

Leftists attacking space science risks alienating potential allies for no practical gain.

At last, he held the throat of his beater.

i love scifi. space is the coolest poo poo ever. but we cannot be trusted with space exploration. we cannot be trusted not to wantonly destroy and rape what we find, and to destroy and rape our own in the process of finding it. capitalism is too powerful an idea, the avarice and violence of our character as a species too indelible.

no, space cannot be justly explored by the human race, but we will do it anyway, if we survive long enough.

Finicums Wake
Mar 13, 2017

space exploration is long-term important, but short-term it's fairly useless, and it can take a lot of resources to do correctly.

we have just a few decades to transition to a clean-energy system, so i'd rather that those resources be directed at climate change for now.

but enabling the species to leave this dull and doomed planet should be on every socialist's long-term agenda. if there's any way to both continue exploring space while transitioning off of fossil-fuels fast enough, then i fully support more space exploration

We live in pessimistic times, but we can't forget that socialism is an ideology rooted in the possibility of human progress. And space is, in the popular imagination, one of the few examples of pure human achievement, a field where everyone knows the USSR went toe to toe with the US.

Do you really want to give that up to loving Elon Musk?

Some of the objections I see are more nihilist than leftist.

Exodus1984
Feb 18, 2005

Don't lie to me.

Space exploration should be one free from ideological mooring. Anyone who is not the least bit curious as what else is out there is a dullard. It really is ok to believe that, in addition to a society based on equity/equality/power of workers/whatever you want to call it, that significant investment is made in space exploration because of the net scientific gains from such an endeavor.

Elon Musk is not interested in going to Mars for any reason other than making money: either through lucrative government contracts, stock manipulation, or just pure resource farming, the guy is a dullard through and through. He's that guy with the Boondock Saints and Trainspotting posters who doesn't know anything.

Who is Admiral Aken Bosch, and what is that old scoundrel up to?

space exploration is actually, in general, very cool and good, and the leftist take that we should defund NASA in order to fund social programs is completely bonkers. NASA should get more taxpayer funding and defense should get less. there's plenty of ugliness in the history of NASA and the space race, but then you have completely good and wholesome programs like Pioneer, Voyager, and Hubble. they harmed nothing and represent the best of us as a species, and in fact could have been even better if it hadn't been for puritan american horseshit management interference.

the only counterpoint i have to go against this is that richard nixon's signature lives on the moon in perpetuity. this is a disgrace.

space exploration is fine for scientific purposes but mostly useless otherwise for leftists

there is not really any reason for humans to live anywhere but earth and colonialism is still colonialism even if there aren't other people there, it's insanely destructive wherever it takes place
