climate change is bad. therefore, instead of investing in mitigation and adaption, we should trust troops and app developers to create, best case, a bunch of orbiting little st jameses.

there are ultimately 2 conversations happening in this thread:

-what's the leftist take on space exploration here in Earth 2021 and the foreseeable future

-what's the leftist take on the concept of space exploration hypothetically in the distant future after we're all long dead and have already achieved utopian post-scarcity fully automated luxury gay space??? communism

space exploration in the former isn't going to move the ball on achieving the latter. there is basically no scenario in which attempting to exploit space resources is actually a good answer to a particular problem/shortage/limitation we are experiencing terrestrially.

1) it loving sucks
2) it loving sucks

the culture books are basically about how interventionism is morally questionable even when you're a communist utopia with near-perfect information. i like how they don't really land on an objective answer, and also when the ships do incredibly sick combat manoeuvres over several pages but then you find out it all only took like half a second :wth:

nerds love arguing about this but imo just read them in publication order, starting with consider phlebas. compared to the others it's a little more space opera + portrays an outsider's view of the culture, so some people recommend starting with the second one.

quote:

Dr Duncan Irving Steel waged an online campaign against a woman, sending her private details to her family, workmates and former partner. He created flyers and a Facebook page with her personal details, and broke into her home to gather “evidence”.

A space scientist who has worked for NASA and the European Space Agency, 67-year-old Steel was sentenced in Nelson District Court on Tuesday on sentences of harmful digital communication and burglary.

[...]

In late November 2019, Steel chose a night he knew his victim would be out of the house and used a ladder to climb through her window. Inside, he went through her laptop and documents, photographing them.

When he found her passports, he hid them behind the desk drawers, knowing she was due to go overseas.

When the woman returned home, she heard someone in her house. Worried, she asked a neighbour to help her check the home. Steel escaped through the laundry door.

After the burglary, the abuse continued, with letters and emails, and texts to the victim’s mother.

In January, police searched Steel’s home. As well as the victim’s personal information, they found flyers listing the woman’s full name, occupation and personal information. The text read “please photograph and post on ... social media.”

https://www.al.com/news/2021/05/it-wasnt-justice-mother-of-2-girls-killed-by-alabama-astronaut-says-of-sentence.html

quote:

A former NASA space shuttle commander indicted on reckless murder charges in the traffic deaths of two girls pleaded guilty to reduced charges Thursday nearly five years after the crash.

James Halsell Jr., 64, of Huntsville, pleaded guilty to two manslaughter and two assault charges during a hearing in which relatives of the victims wore shirts emblazoned with images of 11-year-old Niomi Deona James and 13-year-old Jayla Latrick Parler, killed when a car driven by Halsell slammed into one driven by their father in rural Tuscaloosa County.

While Halsell could have received 20 years for each manslaughter charge and 10 years for each assault charge, a judge agreed to probation and ordered him to spend four years in prison without early release followed by 10 years on supervised release. Halsell could be sent back to prison for 16 years if he violates probation after his release, said District Attorney Hays Webb, who opposed the lighter treatment.

The former astronaut, who went to work in the aerospace industry after leaving NASA in 2006, apologized in court and was taken into custody immediately the hearing. Outside court, the girls’ mother, Latrice Parler, said relatives weren’t pleased with the outcome.

“It wasn’t justice,” said Parler, who told the judge about the last time she saw the children and recounted the anguish of losing them.

“My daughters were amazing, beautiful, smart, strong little girls that could have been anything in this world if they had the opportunity to grow up, but that was taken from me and all of everyone else in this world,” Parler said. Halsell’s apology didn’t seem sincere, she said.

Webb said there were “no winners” in the case.

“It serves as a reminder that there’s a very fine line. You have someone who has been to space five times and, because of a bad decision on his part, wound up killing two girls,” Webb told The Associated Press in an interview afterward.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Schmitt

quote:

Schmitt's view on climate change emphasizes natural over human factors as driving climate. Schmitt has expressed the view that the risks posed by climate change are overrated and suggests instead that climate change is a tool for people who are trying to increase the size of government.[28] He resigned his membership in the Planetary Society primarily because of its Mars-first policy, but also because of its stance on global warming, writing in his resignation letter that the "'global warming scare' is being used as a political tool to increase government control over American lives, incomes and decision making. It has no place in the Society's activities. [sic]"[28] Schmitt spoke at the March 2009 International Conference on Climate Change sponsored by the Heartland Institute.[34] He appeared in December that year on the Fox Business Network, saying "[t]he CO2 scare is a red herring".[35]

In a 2009 interview with conspiracy theorist and radio host Alex Jones, Schmitt asserted a link between the collapse of the Soviet Union and the American environmental movement: "I think the whole trend really began with the fall of the Soviet Union. Because the great champion of the opponents of liberty, namely communism, had to find some other place to go and they basically went into the environmental movement."[36] At the Heartland Institute's sixth International Conference on Climate Change Schmitt said that climate change was a stalking horse for National Socialism.[37]

Schmitt co-authored a 2013 Wall Street Journal opinion column with William Happer, contending that increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are not significantly correlated with global warming, attributing the "single-minded demonization of this natural and essential atmospheric gas" to advocates of government control of energy production. Noting a positive relationship between crop resistance to drought and increasing carbon dioxide levels, the authors argued, "Contrary to what some would have us believe, increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will benefit the increasing population on the planet by increasing agricultural productivity."[38]
