I've been giving the Biden campaign the benefit of the doubt that he's minimally healthy enough to take office for another four years, but this debate is disabusing me of that trust. Trump's also spouting absolute non-sequitur nonsense, but he's doing so with vitality.

Too bad the damage was done. That's basically the story of the debate from the journalist consensus. Biden was nearer to the truth, while looking and sounding like poo poo. Trump was very loud and energetic spouting complete and utter nonsense. Eventually, the nonsense piled up and Biden woke up some. But there will be a whole lot of democratic bedwetting and the party is already predisposed to that (see the 2012 freakout when Obama blew the first debate). That's already the story for everyone involved with the debate that isn't a voter.

Didn't watch the debate but consider this: if Joe's gonna fumble a debate it's probably best to do it in June so the low information undecided wormbrains will forget it by November. OK resume panicking now. I'm gonna do that too.

I know reactions are still forming but Nytimes, WaPo, & Guardian all have top stories discussing replacing Biden on the ticket. Dunno how that would work especially as nearly all primaries are done. I guess simple way would be him to remove himself & Harris takes over as she was voted on by primary voters, but probably not strongest option. But if they just switched in Newsom would that be legal, & how would the precedent work if parties could run whoever they wanted with no concern for nominating? I mean there must be some policy on the books if a major party ticket suddenly couldn’t run in September & had to be replaced. Huh kinda a mess.

Every indication is that the first step is Biden declining the nomination. After that, all the delegates appear to be released and the nomination becomes contested. 2008 was a preview, with all the bits related to super delegates and normal delegates. They all vote for whoever they want from there. The motherfucker of it, and why I lost / am losing sleep, is that Biden polls better than any replacement.

Kith posted:I'm genuinely surprised that Biden straight-up called him a liar multiple times. The L Word has been scarce in past political arenas. Partly by necessity, as Donnie dances around issues or outright denies poo poo he said/did (like suckers/losers). Partly as the mid/post-debate excuse: NYT posted:“I think we did well,” he told reporters during a stop at a Waffle House in Atlanta shortly after midnight. Asked about Democrats’ concerns about his showing and calls for him to consider dropping out of the race, he said: “No. It’s hard to debate a liar.” Likely good that he's not ending the week with that debate, woof. Though that probably tells you his opinion about dropping out!

Plastic_Gargoyle posted:Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we have this exact scenario play out in 2020, too? Biden does poorly in debate, everyone panics? 2012 is the best analogy, when Obama hosed up the first debate against Romney. If I recall correctly, the 2020 debates were way more muddled. Per Wikipedia, the first 2020 debate was dominated by constant trump interruptions, being a piece of poo poo, and catching COVID, so Biden won it 2-1. It was a "poor" debate because Donnie would just constantly be a shitbag and interrupt repeatedly, likely what you're remembering, and people hated it. The second was more normal (for trumpian standards) and Biden won it by less. It's very possible that everyone forgets this debate, if Biden runs around making campaign stops and interviews while Donnie's in court or feeling himself too much. The main consequence is this: https://x.com/amyewalter/status/1806511252186734756?s=19 Back in 2012, the Democratic establishment just wanted Obama to unfuck himself. Right now, Biden's debate performance turned democratic bedwetting into a firehose because nobody thinks he has it any more, all other options poll worse, and Donnie ain't Romney. Edit: but to back off the doomerism, voters currently have the memory span of a goldfish and Donnie just had the 2nd worst performance in debate history Edit 2: plus, it's not like there's no precedent for a brain-broke democratic candidate coming back in the midwest after the worst debate ever https://x.com/igorbobic/status/1806659320219640114?s=19 facialimpediment fucked around with this message at 13:12 on Jun 28, 2024 |

Every NYT columnist who has weighed in is calling for Biden to step aside, four so far. That’s a big deal in democrat circles, wonder if they are building up to a full editorial from the paper making the same recommendation.
