Pretty sure the only reason he ran is to get Trump out of office. He is only doing 1 term and is anything but dynamic. I wish he had run 4 years ago so we wouldn't be in this position. Biden barely managed to beat Trump, I have a strong suspicion Bernie would not have done any better, probably even worse as they would have been able to label him a radical and attack him with the riots.

The immediate ability to start calling for each others blood and instantly poo poo on Biden is rather amazing.

Biden sucks poo poo.

In terms of how Bernie would have done, I honestly think the best thing to look at is Nevada's democratic caucuses. Early voting used ranked-choice forms.

Bernie nearly doubled the totals of any other candidate. After the final realignment, he won with 40% of the vote, well over the 18% Biden got in second place.

The real main challenge with Bernie or any other actual progressive is that the people who run the party are garbage, and when you have that kind of power you can do a lot to stifle any sort of change.

To expand on my previous post one of the signs that makes me think Bernie would've done better are results like Florida. Progressive policies like the $15 minimum wage passed easily, and those are policies that Bernie champions.

Also consider AOC's tweet thread earlier in which the progressive side of the party actually did fairly well everywhere, while the more moderate Ds floundered.

The GOP also has a literal propaganda news network in FNC. The Dems have nothing of the sort; a lot of people argue that "well, CNN and MSNBC are the liberal news media" or whatever, but both of them are more centrist "truth is in the middle" "both sides" trash.

The biggest problem is that mainline / party leader Dems do not want progressive policy at all.

Ranked choice gives much better insight into candidate preference and debunks the utterly asinine "electability" myth.

"XXXXXX isn't electable!": People can still pick their real preference first, then the "safe" choice second (or third or...). Then it turns out the actual preferred candidate wins and all the "but electability!" stuff was nonsense.

As for demographics, the US is huge and I have to ask what state you would consider a good demographic representation for the majority of the US.

But most of the reason was that it was one of the few early primaries caucuses when most of the candidates were still in and it had ranked-choice votes.

AOC was pretty clear with her post so you should probably reread it. Its not a progressives/moderates thing but a how did you reach out to your supporters, did you put in the effort, spend the resources, on the right media, did you utilize 21st century media, etc. AOC has worked to make connections with the younger generation and used modern forms of communication to get her message out so people see it.

It was primarily about messaging, but I'm not really seeing a conflict with the idea that the dem establishment is full of poo poo.

I did, because it's not part of the same thread. Twitter is great.

quote:

It's not really about who has progressive policies, but rather who's putting in the work to reach their voters—and consequently, moderate dems shouldn't be blaming progressives for losing when they were the ones who just shoved all their money into TV ads and barely bothered with digital engagement.

The bolded part is what I focused on, especially because of garbage like this:
https://twitter.com/ericawerner/status/1324439295847968768

I think we agree on point of "progressives aren't the reasons the Ds did poorly in this election, it's the fact that the D establishment is poo poo". Sorry for the confusion.

I don't think its a given that those same people win, even though policies like marijuana legalization, $15 minimum wage, and MFA are extremely popular. Given the relative density of brainworms in the general population, it remains difficult for me to see Bernie, et al., winning persuasively across the country.

I mean, part of that is because the supposed left party constantly runs away from those issues.

Embrace the actual progressive policies, work them into your platform, bash the media in the head until it starts actually educating voters and stops with false equivalency and "both sides" nonsense.

I'd also like a pony and a few billion dollars, since that has about the same chance of happening.

florida has 22 million people in it, third biggest state. that's not nothing.

kamala pulled in over $100M in fundraising in the last few days alone, so as long as she's not going overboard, i think some money in florida is well-spent. in today's connected age, people in florida are gonna talk to other people, and it *really* helps the blue in florida feel like they're not getting totally ignored in a deep red state.

they might not win it, but if it can push any downticket races to a W...

speaking of, there's been a surge of volunteers in FL

With 100 days to go before the Nov. 5 election, Florida Democrats are seeing a groundswell of support for presumptive presidential nominee Kamala Harris, a “surge” they say puts Florida and its 30 electoral votes back in play.

More than 7,000 volunteers signed up to campaign in Florida in the first week since Harris announced she was running for President, a sharp jump from the 300 to 400 volunteers on board to help Biden, said Karol Molinares, a spokeswoman for the state campaign.

“We have seen a surge in momentum on the ground from Florida voters following President Joe Biden’s decision to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris,” Molinares said. “More people are signing up to engage with the campaign than ever before.”

Florida’s growth in grassroot campaigners tops battleground states, she added. Arizona saw a jump of 2,100 volunteers, Georgia saw 4,300 new volunteers and Minnesota saw an increase of 3,300 since Biden stepped aside and endorsed his vice president.

“The dynamics of the campaign here has changed,” Molinares said.

[...]

But Florida is still a key part of the strategy to win, said Jasmine Burney Clark, campaign director for Harris in Florida.

“Florida is a critical state this election, and it’s one we’re determined to win,” Clark said.

A more energetic turnout for Harris at the polls could help the U.S. Senate and other down-ballot races in Florida, as well as the two controversial amendments on the ballot to legalize recreational marijuana and protect abortion rights, said Aubrey Jewett, a political science professor at University of Central Florida.

“With Harris at the top of the ticket, Florida is more competitive than with Biden,” Jewett said.

Democratic turnout fell off in 2020 and in 2022 because voters weren’t excited by Biden or gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist, he said.

“Trump is still the favorite in Florida, but Harris gives Democrats hope, and if they have hope they’ll show up and vote,” Jewett said.

The Harris for President ground game in Florida is headquartered in Ocoee, with 33 staffers manning 11 offices around the state and plans to expand into Leon County, Fort Myers, the Panhandle and The Villages.

Veteran staff haven’t seen such excitement since the 2008 campaign for former President Barack Obama, Molinares said.

To keep the momentum going in Florida, events are planned across the state this weekend from Miami to Pensacola and every weekend through the election, Molinares said.

What’s happening in Florida echoes a grassroots momentum across the nation, along with record-breaking fundraising, she said. Within 36 hours of launching her campaign, donations for Harris crossed the $100 million mark, with 60% of the 880,000 donors giving for the first time this election.

“This signals strong enthusiasm to stop the Trump-Vance campaign,” Molinares said.
