You're allowed to pick whatever state or city for the housing waitlist you'd like. The waiting time could be up to 3 years, but sometimes shorter. Once you receive approval to go live at that location, after a year you can get permission to take your section 8 voucher anywhere else. Every single rental property accepts section 8 vouchers (they have to), and you can pick a decent apartment. You'll only have to pay 30% of whatever the rent would be, and from there you won't have to be stuck in wherever you're at.

Once dad goes and mom goes back to watching ancient aliens I think things can progress, because for all the inbaked subtle racism AA may have, when compared to the giant reichstag dumpster fire of fox, I'll take it.

If there's any bright side to that, it's that your backpay sounds like it's going to be huuuuuge, so that may make you more tempting a client for a disability lawyer to take on. The only advice I can offer without actually knowing too much about your case is that when you get a rejection notice + appeal offer, or a letter for a disability evaluation, if you happen to get scheduled to revisit the same evaluator or judge who rejected you before, you can appeal on that reason alone. The hope is that you can meet with those who can determine your case without any preconceived notions. Also, when you get to meet a new evaluator, absolutely talk about how you are on your worst times. It's natural to want to seem like a stable person in public, but this is the one time where you have to mention if depression/PTSD is turning you into a zombie who can't even take care of themselves, maintain a job, maintain a healthy sleep or hygiene routine, etc. Of course, be presentable during the meeting itself, but yeah.
