It's because the console makers have given up trying to actually be innovative OP. They know they can just churn out Call of Duty & Fortnite garbage and make bank. Don't need to bother making games prettier, the dumb rear end gamer market will eat it up.

If you try to make the characters look too realistic you run into the uncanny valley problem, characters have to be at least somewhat stylized or they'll all be creepy, then no one will want to draw porn of them and sales will tank.

Graphics on modern games are way too detailed and overdone. In classic games, if you saw a pixel in the distance you knew it was either a good thing, or a bad thing, and either way you knew it was important. New games have so much extraneous crap you can't even filter out who's shooting at you or where the bullets are coming from, etc. Need to get back to that clean, minimalist look that games like Mechwarrior 2 and X Wing/Tie Fighter had in the '90s.

I mean, if you're looking for extremely high-end and also weird and abstract, you're gonna have to wait a while. Games are kinda bound to look as good as whatever the latest megascan pack is and however good the unreal engine default settings are, or equivalent. There are very few companies pushing the envelope right now because doing that is expensive, and with a lot of diminishing returns.

Also, the big improvement that comes from ray tracing is from global illumination, but that is pretty costly in terms of performance, so you kind of get the worst of both worlds with reflective puddles and frame drops. The Unreal Engine 5 demo that came out looked really impressive...it is just going to be 3-4 years before games catch up. Basically, you are going to get last-gen games at 4k/60 fps and thats about it. Or you can just buy a PC and set up steam link because there are almost no true exclusives anymore anyway and everything is cross-platform. I think the Demon Soul's remake is the only exclusive of note on PS5 (and it is unclear if it won't just show up on PC at some point anyway).

It's the opposite of media being the best when you were 12, once you reach middle age and start losing the ability to learn new things and the energy to seek out things that push your boundaries then everything is less impressive and interesting. When you see younger people gushing about how amazing the graphics in new games are you're going to rationalize that it's because they're young and stupid rather than you being old and jaded, and it's only going to get worse as time goes on. If you're lucky you have the kind of brain that can be happy spending the rest of your life revisiting old titles chasing the shadow of the dopamine squirt you had when you were younger and will find a community of similarly aged enthusiasts, if not you're going to either have to find something else to do with your time or just become one of those joyless grognards who is the gaming equivalent of the guy for whom high school football was the peak of his life.

With the evaporation of the middle class and Law of Diminishing Returns doing the horizontal tango with the limits of materials science, all the smart developers know well enough to give up on making "traditional" video games on PC and set-top boxes and just go whale hunting with cheaply produced barely disguised unregulated casinos on smartphones. In a decade, you will be laughed at for expecting to need anything more complicated than a touch screen or a bank account with less than ten grand to play a game at all.

Even if I think the OP is not entirely serious, they're mostly going on about graphics and they're right in that things have stagnated. Personally I don't care, I play the ugliest games, but graphics advances outside of AI stuff that is mostly not implemented in real time games have halted. By 2010 or so there were still 80's papers being slowly implemented, and by now there's a stack of new ideas and papers that companies either don't have time, money or motivation to try to implement, plus stuff from the 80's. The OP likes to see weird and crazy poo poo, I'd honestly move from games to demoscenes I guess.

That new Bugsnax game visually looks like poo poo. It's supposed to look cartoony, but I expected it be well executed cartoony. Not "gently caress the SeriesX/PS5, even gently caress the XBone/PS4, this game could've easily come out in the 360/PS3 era".

Forget photoreal video games, try taking a photo that looks real, exactly like how you see things. It can't be done. Between the vast gap between technological and biological lenses, how we perceive light and colour, movement, there is no way to print and frame a photo of a real, fully depthy object that would trick a high school graduate into thinking they were looking through a window for more than 30 seconds.

I don't want perfectly realistic graphics, I want a hyperreal, stylised idealised version of the world. The world constantly looks like poo poo in real life, I want graphics to focus on the things that make the world beautiful and atmospheric and enhance those with artistry. The actual real world is generally an abrasive and dirty looking place with flat lighting and nothing interesting to look at. With the exception of a few places, everything looks like poo poo.

Exactly, show me poo poo I can't see just wandering outside. Realism is cool from a technical standpoint but certainly not a requirement for there to be any sort of connection with the characters in game. I'll take a stylised world over an realistic one any day of the week if there was a choice in game.
