https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/18/world/australia/afghanistan-war-crimes.html

quote:

MELBOURNE, Australia — They were the elite of the elite among Australian soldiers, with a record of daring raids in Afghanistan. But a twisted and extreme warrior culture was being instilled, driving the commandos to glorify atrocity as they waged a methodical campaign to kill helpless Afghans and cover it up.

Commanders ordered junior soldiers to execute prisoners so they could record their first “kill.” Adolescents, farmers and other noncombatants were shot dead in circumstances clearly outside the heat of battle. Superior officers created such a godlike aura around themselves that troops dared not question them, even as 39 Afghans were unlawfully killed.

These are among the findings of battlefield misconduct, released on Thursday in a public accounting by the Australian military — a rare admission of abuses that often remain hidden during war.

We can all learn from our past mistakes.

If anyone is interested the national TV broadcaster did a show about it last night on 4 Corners and you can watch it here. It might not work if you are not in Australia though, I haven't had a chance to watch it either. Usually 4 Corners is a good current affairs program.

Hopefully our military will clean house.

Bumping this thread. You may have heard about Australia and China having a trade spat with wine, among other things. So the deputy directory of China's foreign ministry decided to throw his hat into the ring about Australian war crimes with this tweet.

Australian Prime Minister aka Scomo lost his poo poo about it and was much more annoyed with this tweet than the murder of Afghan civilians. In related news the Guardian just got its hands on some unpublished photos.

quote:

Photo reveals Australian soldier drinking beer out of dead Taliban fighter's prosthetic leg
Senior Australian special forces soldiers drank beer out of the prosthetic leg of a dead Taliban soldier at an unauthorised bar in Afghanistan – with a photograph of the act being revealed for the first time by Guardian Australia.

A number of photographs obtained by the Guardian show one senior soldier – who is still serving – sculling from the leg in an unofficial bar known as the Fat Lady’s Arms, which was set up inside Australia’s special forces base in Tarin Kowt, the capital of Uruzgan province, in 2009.

Another appears to show two soldiers performing a dance with the leg.

The sculling picture is the first to be published that confirms previous reports of the practice of using the leg as a drinking vessel.

Some soldiers say the practice was widely tolerated by officers at high levels and even involved some of them. This was despite the limb potentially being a war trophy – an item Australian soldiers were forbidden to remove from the battlefield, let alone keep......
You can see 2 of the photos in the link. :australia:

Bump for what's been going on. Australian Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith has been in court for a defamation trial where he accuses several Australian newspapers of publishing false stories about himself committing war crimes. The whole trial is complete bonkers so I suggest you read the article here. If you are too lazy here are some highlights:
  • Burned his laptop in 2018 when allegations of war crimes started to become public. Zero wiped his laptop this year 5 days after his lawyers told him not to so
  • had an affair and punched his mistress after a dinner at parliament house then took photos of her unconscious body
  • hired a private investigator after the mistress became pregnant to follow her around and filmed her going to an abortion clinic
  • sent threats to other SAS soldiers who were talking to investigators
  • asked friend to get sim cards for burner phones
  • Andrew Hastie, who is our assistant defense minister and member of parliment has to stand trial since he was Roberts-Smith troop commander

The whole trial is a poo poo show and makes the SAS look like either bloodthirsty maniacs (if you believe the defendants).
