The "including playoffs" NHL goal record, by the way, is 1,016.

ovie would score a thousand goals if you just time travelled him to the gretzky era. Those slappers vs goalies with an oven mitt with a little blocker and little pads and being 15 feet out of the net and not caring about things like angles, they just wanna stack the pads!

I think he might break it

I no longer think he will break it. Gonna end the season with a tie like a loser

Mr. Kite posted:Its a fun theoretical, but you can say that about every player in every sport. Training, techniques, fitness, and coaching is so much better. Sports as an industry took such a jump in the 90s. Also while Ovie still destroys 80s goalies, he's also not blasting the same slappers with 80s wood sticks. if he gets his skate/stick tech too, he's breaking 100 regularly.

He jinxed himself hard by saying he won't break the record on an empty net. Dude is about to go into the longest goal drought of his career.

The NHL computers can't handle a value greater than 894 in the goals field so if he scores again, it'll say he has -1 goals and has to start over

Record aside, he has 41 goals this year and is third in the league. Absolutely wild for a 39 year old and being in the league for nearly 20 years.

Yeah, at this point, it’s pretty much just him and Howe who have done it. Players don’t typically play this long, and if they do, they are past the point of being top goal scorers. It’s remarkable,

This season is currently his 5th best season in goals/game. In his 20th season. If he scores 6 goals in his final 6 games, it will be his 2nd best season. Crazy stuff.

Still needs: - 9 more to break the record for goals scored not including empty netters - 51 more to break the record including playoff goals - 52 more to break the record for even strength goals He’ll probably break all of these.

The two things I will be watching over the next few seasons is whether Ovie will score 1000, and if Crosby will get 2000 points. I think Ovie scoring 1000 is more likely, but Crosby has an outside shot depending on how long he wants to stick around, and whether he can keep up the PPG pace. Another 90-point season will put him close to 1800 after next season.

Actually, I don't think Ovie scoring 1000 is very likely. He has said in interviews for a few years now that after he plays out his contract, he wants to go back to Russia and play for Dynamo Moscow again before he can't play pro hockey anymore. So he probably only plays one more year and retires from the NHL at 40. If the Caps manage to win the Cup this year, it wouldn't shock me if he asks to go to Russia early. But if I had to bet, he plays next year too and ends up with like 930-950 career goals.

Twin Cinema posted:The two things I will be watching over the next few seasons is whether Ovie will score 1000, and if Crosby will get 2000 points. Crosby most likely would have hit it but for injuries, but I doubt it happens now. Let's say he conservatively puts up a point per game next year and the year after that. That puts him at 1847 points. It would take two more PPG seasons after *that* to get him to 2000. As for Ovechkin, if he played three more seasons and averaged 30 goals a season he'd be just about to 1000, but he'd have to be maintaining a 30 goal/season pace into his 40s. They both got screwed a little bit by lockout shortened seasons as well. I'd say Ovechkin probably has somewhere from 30-40 more goals at least if those lockout shortened seasons were played out. But given their current circumstances....kinda doubt either hits those marks even if they keep playing. They're both freak athletes but it's a lot to ask to maintain a 30 goal pace or PPG pace into your 40s.

Crosby is only 37. I say only because I thought he was 39 like Ovechkin. But then I remembered he was drafted a year later than Ovechkin; and Ovechkin was nearly a 2003 draft pick. Overall Crosby is 1.88 years younger. Sid has been healthy and producing lately. I could see him doing 5 more years averaging 60pts. Also, Crosby's injury history has been overblown. He had some bad years in the early 10s, but since then he's played in 93% of his team's games. Mr. Kite fucked around with this message at 04:48 on Apr 11, 2025 |

It's both plausible that Sid hits 2000 points and also unlikely, which seems like a copout. He's been remarkably productive, like Ovechkin, and he could probably play 3-4 more years pretty easily. You never know when an old guy is gonna hit a plateau, when he won't want to play anymore, etc., but I could see it. He's 317 away from when I'm posting, that's 4 ~80 point seasons. Which doesn't feel impossible given he's currently got 87 (ha ha) at age 37. But I dunno, it feels like a lot.

For Sid it comes down to how willing he is to play past his prime. With his strength and brains, he could probably be a good 50 point third line centre pretty much forever once he stops being a PPG guy if he wants to adapt his game. So the question only he can answer is does the hockeybot want to play forever or does he want to stop when he's no longer a star

I kinda thought he was getting close to retirement during the 2 covid years but then he's been back to big time producing the last few seasons so eh. I have no idea at this point, but he's making a case for being another 40 something year old still-good hockey player. I don't really wanna dig into the info right now but I do wonder if that's more common these days now.

I'd say a lot will come down to how excited he is about the prospect of playing for the Penguins. If the team looks like they're on an exciting growth trajectory, maybe that keeps him playing past his current deal. If they're still pretty bad two years from now, that might be it for him. He's not going to play anywhere else.
