Hey OP, I've shucked literally 15 8tb WD drives and they're all working great in my server. I got them for $120 each which is hilariously cheap. I also just ordered a 14tb for $180 from Best Buy. The slickdeals.net alert app is your friend.

Bonus is 8tb drives and higher are not SMT, at least for Western Digitals. So you're getting pretty drat good drives for the paltry $120.

I am a media hoarder OP and I don't use any streaming services. I have every episode of Empty Nest, Hey Dude, Early Edition, The Hogan Family (FKA Valerie), My Two Dads, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Welcome Freshmen, original broadcast version of every SNL episode from 1975 to 2006 (not the bullshit chopped Hulu versions) as well as raw BD rips of every single Friends episode for the wife (all 400 gigs of it). My Simpsons DVD rips are 4:3 and include the commentary tracks. gently caress you, Disney+

Hell I even have every episode of this piece of poo poo

My friends literally LOL irl when they see my Plex library. I love it.

what i find offputting about that subreddit (aside from it being reddit) is how the vast majority of them talk about how they're being super noble and how they're digital guardians when in reality most of their content is just pirated tv and porn

I would say half of my content is Blu-rays and DVDs I actually own. I don't want a 150mb copy of a Married With Children episode. I rip it with MakeMKV and leave it in mpeg2. I'm also big on audio commentaries which pirates never include. Hell, I just bought (and immediately ripped) the Blu-ray box set for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and it has absolutely zero extras. Though I admit a lot of my purchases are used copies on eBay which means absolutely nobody makes money off of it except Meg Whitman or whoever the gently caress owns eBay now so I'm not really sure what I'm doing is any better than piracy.

The other half is stuff you cannot legally buy if you wanted to. Early Edition is an incredible TV show from the 90s that seemingly nobody remembers. Only seasons one and two were ever released on DVD. So the literal only way to get seasons 3 and 4 is to pirate them. My jaw actually dropped when I saw that usenet actually had all the episodes.

If you need an 8tb wait until cyber Monday and get an external Western Digital and rip it out of its shell because you save like $100 that way.

Bullshit like this is why I'm not getting a PS5. I can store like 8 games and then if I want more I have to delete them? Even if I own a physical copy? My immense spiteful nature and hoarding tendencies ensures I'm sitting this generation of consoles out.

i know their brag is an artisanal SSD carefully hand-soldered by the most mustachioed driveologists, but they really could have thrown a loving m2 expansion slot in there.

i mean the fancy on board ssd is speced at 5.5GB/sec, my 4.0 drive tickles that

I've only had one hard drive ever just flat out fail on me out of 50+ I've had in my life and it was a Seagate. It just flat out died with no way to revive it. Windows wouldn't even recognize it. IT WAS LITERALLY THE ONLY SEAGATE I EVER HAD. 2TB down the drain.

I've had maybe three Western Digitals die on me but each one of them gave me ample warning that they were going to die and I was always able to retrieve 99% of the data off of them. Not good ole Seagate. That fucker just died while transferring stuff to it. What a piece of poo poo.

It's funny, during the 360/PS3 era I thought the 360 was better. During the Xbone/PS4 era, I thought the PS4 was better. Now I'm leaning towards the Series X or whatever the hell it's called because they actually let you expand the storage with a cool little slot in the back.

Also recently my PS4's hard drive got full which is when I learned you cannot use an external drive with a jailbroken PS4 for some reason so I had to buy an internal replacement drive and it turns out there are no manufacturers that make a 4tb laptop drive that's thinner than 15mm which is ridiculous because a 15mm drive fits in virtually nothing. So I had to buy an SSD even though I didn't want to, just because that's the only drive that would fit.

It's gonna be real interesting seeing what happens when 120GB games become the norm for the PS5.
