Michigan State appears to be real, real bad.

I still expect them to make the Final Four, because that's what they do.

Wisconsin's center got foul-autobenched early, but Dickenson basically did nothing early. Then, Michigan went on a 41-6 run and it wasn't bullshit either. Michigan was averaging something stupid like a block a minute.

Game's going to end in the 20s, but it was 40 midway through the second half.

I don't know how much of the game is Michigan playing like hot garbo and how much of it is because Eli Brooks is out. That led to weirdo lineups with a 1, a 3, two backup 4s, and a 5. Michigan's backcourt is likely sketchier than everyone thought.

Am I correct in thinking both of these teams are really well coached? If so, how good can Michigan be next year, given that they are pulling in the No. 1 recruiting class? Or are they only so coachable because they have so many seniors right now?

It's hard to know. Michigan whiffed on two five-stars that were late-decommits for this year, then scrambled and got the grad transfers Smith/Brown. Normally, grad transfers don't work out when they jump conference difficulty a full level, but both Smith/Brown have been absolute home runs.

Then, Dickenson was forced out there full-time because of an injury to the grad/backup center, earlier than they wanted, then never really left.

People that track the X/O play design progressions and stuff continuously harp on how good of a coach Juwan is. It sure appears that Juwan is such a Good Dude That's Been There that he gets the buy-in needed to execute what he calls, which feeds the virtuous cycle. Then again, Michigan lost the only game Eli Brooks was out for, so their backcourt might be a bit thin without two seniors.

Still, not a bad year for a predicted 5th/6th in the Big Ten.

Michigan got decent-ish threes and bricked nearly all of them. Maryland was getting wide-open looks and canning all of them - none were bullshit. Michigan went to a small-ball lineup to stop the open 3s and that shifted the half.

Apparently Juwan got pissed that the refs wouldn't look during a timeout, Maryland's head coach got counter-pissed, and a yelling melee got Juwan tossed. Maryland immediately went on a 6-0 run.

Michigan then went on an 8-0 run.

Michigan did a version of that in the regular season meeting. Michigan was up big in the last few minutes, but every single trip back tOSU would nail a three and the lead got cut significantly. as Michigan would only make 1-2 free throws.

I honestly didn't think Michigan would make it to the Sweet 16 based on a neutral bracket in my head, but sure initially seems like a pretty good draw. Catching the 16-16 play-in seems lucky as hell. Would've pegged them for the rare 1-16 letdown based on how the season ended.

You're right on the Maryland game, but tOSU completely poo poo themselves to let Michigan back into the game after being down 12 with five minutes to go. Less Michigan good, more tOSU bad in that ending. I could see a Livers-less Michigan team having a lovely day, then losing to a 16 having a hot night. Low chance, but I could've seen it happening.

I don't really see that anymore, but I see Michigan capping out at the Sweet 16 / Elite 8. But, could also be hilarious if all the Big Ten teams turn out to be as absurdly good as we all thought and everyone in the conference just clowns everyone.

Isaiah Livers is trying to be back for the 2nd weekend of the NCAA Tournament. The game vs LSU or St. Bonaventure is going to be tough, but if they can get to the 2nd week and Livers is back, I like Michigan's chances to get to the Final Four.

To sort of expand on my earlier stuff - Livers wasn't himself for a while, but outright losing him hurt. That's why I figured you could squint hard and see a 16-seed upset - foul trouble for Dickenson and a few other lovely breaks could lead to an Oakland debacle. Won't happen any more though, between playing at Mackey (gently caress Lucas Oil), a 16 off a short turnaround, and rest, it won't happen. Basically, Livers out lowered the floor a lot, but didn't lower the ceiling a whole lot.

It's weird that they're calling it a "stress injury" when it's probably a 6-8 week stress fracture! But then again, I didn't think Brooks would be back for the BTT after getting carried off. Most injury experts said that was a 2-3 week thing at minimum and he was out a whole week and looked normal.
