It's insane how much IW's story pissed me off because every single aspect of that game is miles better than 7 and I never want to play it again lol. I feel good about the technical advancements they're making with the JRPG format, just let Kiryu gently caress off and die already.

yeah there were things I really didn't like, lol. was that 90 year old guy magic or...? nanba and adachi felt shoehorned in, somehow all the side story characters from Japan are just in Hawaii. normally I sort of feel like you just excuse stuff because it's cool to put it in but the pirate amnesia version strained credibility less despite being based on IW's story, lol

That’s always been something that felt a little weird in the series lol, the switch to Yokohama in 7 and Lost Judgment also meant that every side character in Kamurocho coincidentally either moved to or had sudden business in Yokohama right after both main characters moved there

yeah, I try to just believe that kiryu and/or Ichiban are just kind of drawing people to follow them with some kind of magical charisma but for some reason I draw the line at Hawaii lmao. I think a lot of it is that the language barrier is glossed over and at least on the Japanese language version, two of the characters who are supposed to have spoken English for most of their lives are fuckin struggling with it. it calls constant attention to the fact that it's a very different setting half the time and the rest of the time they pretend it's just Yakuza city.

Lol but in the Majima spinoff they address the language thing in the first five minutes by having him (spoilers for great joke) look at the camera and just say It Was Tough But I Figured It Out.

Yeah I'm not really interested in the RPG games anymore until I'm sure Kiryu isn't in them, after sending him off in 6/7/Gaiden they gave him probably more story time in IW than he had in those three games combined lol.

i haven't played IW yet but agreed. they should regulate the old guard to NPC trainers or superbosses like other jrpgs. the new cast is strong enough to carry the game on their own they just don't seem confident enough to try it

I'm not done with IW yet still somehow but the Kiryu reminiscing/sendoff stuff is great and some of my favorite moments in the series in a long time, but it does also make me hope this is the last game for him outside maybe quick cameos and brief appearances. Part of me also wishes they made it into like a The Man Who Erased His Name 2: The Man Whose Name Is Still Erased instead of stapling it to an Ichiban game, but if they did that I guess we wouldn't have gotten the Kiryu/Seonhee/Saeko/Nanba party and I really like their dynamic.

kiryu can be in as a mentor, I guess, and I don't even mind if they just find a quick reason for him to be running the orphanage and quietly getting old.

lol, yeah. the talking at the camera set up for Pirate Yakuza is a little obnoxious but it just sort of works, because it makes the whole game seem like a Big Fish story told by a wildly unreliable narrator. like you get the impression that half of the pirate stuff is that Majima bumped his head, found a funny hat and framed the entire telling of the story around it.

Kiryu: How has Kamurocho been lately?
Majima: I actually spent the year in Africa dodging booby traps to get ancient treasures and befriended a crippled orphan with a pet lion. His father was Tarzan.
Kiryu: Sure thing, Majima. We playing koi koi now or do you want another beer first?

IW definitely suffers from too much Kiryu. They got the ball rolling on the Hawaii narrative, had it pick up steam, then immediately bricked all its momentum with hours of Kiryu running around.

I think Gaiden made IW worse after it was such a great send off, it made bringing Kiryu back into the fold seem even more cowardly. Not to excuse IW's generally bad plotting by saying Gaiden was too good or anything.

the only appropriate ending for kiryu would have been for him to live out his older years at the orphanage in okinawa, chopping vegetables, getting visits from haruka, mentoring more orphans and wayward Yakuza, training people in martial arts, karaoke, toylet high scores, typing BOOOOOOOOBS, RIZAP, and occasionally going down to the cabaret clubs to take hostesses on dates until they invite him to a love hotel where he gives them two hours of profound life advice. they just missed the first four times, hopefully next game.

IW had a lot of individually great scenes that came together to a completely incomprehensible and actively annoying story. I suspect its development really suffered from COVID disruptions because so much happens that gets dropped or contradicted or just never matters at all. Like why even have the whole detailed flashback of Kiryu working in nuclear waste disposal and make us think "woah, that's how he got cancer, so Ebina has indirectly been the one to bring Kiryu down at last" only for them to then shrug and say no that was probably just a coincidence it doesn't matter.

How much of a gimmick was it when you could have Yakuza who were good at things NOT related to having cancer on your team? Or is it okay because they gave you a boner and actual healthy Yakuza don't?
