Plus I just love the finale of 4. I know 5 has more side content but I’ve played like 8 of these things by now so that isn’t supremely special to me.

Yeah, no, 4 is better no question.

Honestly, yeah. But 5 did it so much worse than the games before imo. (Haven't played anything after yet, holding out for the PC Port of 6 before I play 7)

I still enjoyed my time with 5 a lot I just think there's too much of the game and that hurts the story.

I started playing Yakuza 0 again waiting for 6 (after playing everything up to 5) on PC.
And it just makes it all the clearer how good 0 actually is. I started New Game+ and actually did Mr. Shakedown. Previously I only beat him once and was like "been there done that" afterwards. But drat, it's easy to get dough quick, especially early on. Fucker even has a story and there's four of them. The only disappointment is that there's no hidden fifth Mr. Shakedown that shakes down all the others to fund his dream of becoming a protagonist in a Yakuza game.

Now I'm doing the real estate thing even though I have no use for money at this point in time. But I gotta do at least some of it to get the Trouble Finder.

But yeah, my favorite thing in Kiwami 2 was walking around in first person. I think I actually turned off the minimap for that one so I can soak in the world better.

All of a sudden I found myself thinking of this man from Yakuza 3

He was always there in that street, contemplating the ground underneath him but not interactable (unless there's something I missed, I wasn't exactly thorough)

After playing Yakuzas 0-6 my ranking is as follows

If you disagree with that meet me in Tenkaichi alley opposite children's park in the lot with the porno mag vending machine in it and if you bring coins we can look at the magazines.

I finally made it to Yakuza 7 after making it a point to finish 0-6 first before digging into that.

Yakuza 7 Trip report so far
- Ichiban is an absolute dunce, I got no problem with him not being smart but he's straight up a dumb gently caress who doesn't understand that being outside of the world for 18 years actually doesn't mean that the world stands still, holy gently caress. They were REALLY pushing it with how idiotic they could have made him in this particular circumstance. Doesn't mean I don't like Ichiban, just means you should not let him make any decisions whatsoever.
- I like the combat but I think I, despite making GBS threads on it, like the brawler combat more at this point.
- Sidestories are fun, who woulda thunk
- Really lukewarm on the bigger map. I thought they knew what they were doing by not having bigger maps in the past games. I also don't like that some areas have stronger enemies, disincentivizing you from exploring. I know it makes sense with a bigger map, but then again, I don't like the bigger map.
- gently caress the generic jRPG dungeons. Like, the dungeons that don't feel like dungeons are fine but a loving four level absurdly spaceous sewer can go die in a ditch and rot there.
- In fact, gently caress any dungeon that goes on for multiple long levels. Not sure if there's more of that but I hate it because it's always about two or three levels too long no matter what (I'm getting flashbacks to a particular dungeon from Persona 5)
- Holy poo poo I got a new party member as a reward for completing the first leg of the management game. Weirdly, the thing that got me most excited about was the Karaoke song that comes with a new party member, and boy is it a good one, I love how over the top hyped the interjections for Butterfly are, the only one that comes close is Rouge of Love, which I'm not sure is in this game yet, but I wouldn't be surprised.
- Having a story beat where you take a way a party member and then get me into four consecutive battles without the chance to change equipment is a dick move.

That's it for now, I know there's some complaints in there, but those don't really have much of an impact. I think it's real cool

Akiyama's substories in 4 are basically just him sending people to do substories, like, you can just imagine it

"A moneylending firm that charges no interest, huh? Sounds like a scam." then they walk past the office and it's like "Oh, isn't that this shady moneylending firm? Well I need a billion yen anyway it's worth a shot"
And then Akiyama sends them out on wacky adventures we'll never see.

I mean, I get why some people vastly prefer 4 and others vastly prefer 5. They are very different.

In 4 you have Four Protagonists all in one city, although it's not much each of these characters has access to at least something the others don't
In 5 you have Five Protagonists in five cities (imo two of them are blandness incarnate, and they've done Sotenbori dirty) So you have five environments (and then some) total, that alone makes it feel very different from any other game in the series

I'm in camp 4 and not too fond of 5. I feel like 5 tried to bite off more than it could chew. There was really no need for any of Baseball dude's arc it added nothing that couldn't have been accomplished in ways that didn't take several hours. But it was nice having a playable version of Hot Fuzz only instead of a Buddy Cop Duo you're a washed-up baseball player and a loan shark

I'll say this though, the finale of both games is kinda weak. Anyway, I don't wanna be too negative in this happy thread. I still enjoyed them both. It's just in the landscape of seven games that freaking rule there just has to be one that's not my cup of tea even though it still mostly rules like holy poo poo there's a heat action that's just throwing up a downed opponent by the leg then doing a sick Rainmaker as the victim is flying in the air upside down and then you do a loving elbow drop to the throat as the poor gently caress is still falling down holy gently caress.

"If I lose I will set myself on fire."
I played Yakuza 7 today and basically spent the entire day in Chapter 12. Doing the business, finishing up sub-stories I'd left open and that took me a few hours of having a good time. Then I decided to advance the story and I went to Sotenbori, which is cool but the loading screen kinda spoiled it.
THEN I go to Omi HQ. For I while I thought they forgot to write Ichiban as an absolute idiot but they started again. Then motherfucking Majima and Saejima show up and I lose my poo poo. Then I get my rear end kicked by Majima super hard to a point where I thought this fight was a mandatory loss. But then it turned out I have to win. I had no trouble with anything in the game so far and I thought I was at a normal level for where I was in the game. I hate when games do this.
So I came back trained up and more powerful, got some new gear too, even switched some jobs (pretty much did the entire battle arena to get the jobs up to speed and gain like ten levels until I was 50), and everything's cool. Until Saejima joins the fight they do a combo heat action without a discernible telegraph and I die instantly and curl up to a ball and cry. This is the part of the jRPG experience that I really could do without. Everything else loving rules but I had to take a break here..

Anyway, the thing I was the most excited about every time a new party member joined is the Karaoke song that comes along with them.

"If I lose I will set myself on fire."
I finished LaD now.

I liked it. And I'm curious to see where the series goes moving forward. Internal intrigue in the clans, as well as the rivalry between the Tojo and Omi, have basically had their fingerprint on every Yakuza game and for them to essentially go forward and be like "Not gonna be a thing anymore" really feels like saying goodbye in a way and a passing of the torch. Not a big fan of Kiryu showing up at all, though. It's like... "I'm pretending to be dead and no one knows I exist anymore but here I am showing everyone that I exist, being in a room with people who know me." I hope he loving said hi at Morning Glory before pulling that at least. C'mon, stop getting roped into this Yakuza poo poo that you try to escape via more and more extreme means every time. Hell, you made everyone think you're dead and yet here you are, idiot! Absolute buffoon!

But they really have to iron out some kinks with the combat. It's usually good. Nothing groundbreaking but I enjoy it. But in the moments where it's bad, it sucks. Positioning of enemies and party members should not be a factor to the gameplay if you don't have meaningful control over that especially not if they move around while you choose commands. Arranging enemies like bowling pins and then they move around before I can act and do a Reckless Charge through all of them should be a crime. Geometry also gets in the way sometimes, though I'd rather have that than a separate battle screen. When enemies charge super ultra murder attacks they shouldn't get multiple turns in a row so they can charge and unleash their one-hit KO before there's time to react. There's other things too that detract in certain moments but if they go forward with more jPRG style games with turn-based combats those should be easy to remedy

Also: Heat Actions as Limit Breaks are a loving no brainer, why didn't you do it?

I do kinda want more brawler games, though. I dunno what it is exactly but I think they suit the stories more.

Saejima is loving rad.
He has a heat action where he pulls some poor gently caress up by the leg throwing them up and they do a flip and then Saejima does a Lariat as the opponent is upside down in the air and they do another flip, then on the way down Saejima elbow drops them in the throat.

And yeah, Tanimura sucks. He might have had some appeal in Japan before they changed is face model and VA due to some poo poo. It's a good thing Tanimura never shows up again after 4 (unless there's an easter egg or something I dunno) so we can take that has him dying somehow

apparently the writer who took over after 2 really wanted kiryu to be a man alone which is why sayama bails immediately in 3.

And then she never shows up again, which is the weirdest. Like, in 6 I was expecting more blasts from the past since it's supposed to be the end of Kiryu's story and thought she'd show up for sure. But we didn't even get Majima to interact with Kiryu. Game still rules of course, but I expected a little more fan service

Re: Baseball dude in Yakuza 5: Yeah, I absolutely agree that his story didn't need to be there. It's in fact one of the biggest reasons I'm so down on the game. He's a completely new character introduced in the 11th hour of the game, he sucks to play as and the city you get to play in is only marginally better than what Saejima has to gently caress around in. They could have resolved the story in a better way without adding the wrinkle of an additional arc imo
