Y3 is extremely jank because it was the first mainline game in the series on PS3 (i think kenzan was a launch title in japan) but omg it’s so loving good

has anyone played yakuza dead souls? i think it was the last game for that particular engine before the new one for 5

dead souls is clunky as all get out but extremely charming, and as far as i can tell it's entirely canon by way of none of the games after it contradicting its plot points

it's just that nobody ever talks about the kamurocho zombie outbreak or that ryuji goda is still alive and has a barrett from ff7 style gun for an arm

idk what it is about the setting but up to chapter 4 and this is my fave yakuza story since 0. K1 and K2 have awesome dramatic moments and fun crime story melodrama but the low-key nature of Kiryu just trying to put his life back together and make a safe space for the orphan kids is rly cool, and I like the ryudo goons, the sunny beach, the new city, and the simmering land grab conspiracy stuff. Good poo poo

i love the poo poo out of y3 but i gotta admit the start of chapter 5 on legend is really bustin my balls

the first chase scene is a potential game over and there’s only one out of the way save point right before it and a mini boss fight

those chase scene lifebars are a real kick in the dick, lemme tell u

also chapter 5 in y3 is where you can get the tiger drop and komaki parry, so the difficulty curve can potentially go way the hell down as long as you don’t miss it

i think i know the boss fight you were stuck on, Brasseye, and tbh after a few goes at it i had no trouble with it, but i can see being totally underleveled with not enough skills unlocked making it real tough

that chase sequence after it gave me like 10 game overs on Legend difficulty tho… :negative:

so it turns out for Legend in Yakuza 3 chapter 8, you have to do the whole thing in one shot, no save points during the chapter except right at the start before the poo poo hits the fan

enemy gauntlet, boss, enemy gauntlet again, zero margin of error chase sequence, more enemy gauntlet, another boss, and then another boss

it’s hard to describe how glad i am that i got that over with :sweatdrop:

Two separate thoughts but- Jun Oda from yakuza 0 is cool I wish his story ended a different way, it was kind of stupid and he would have been a good reoccurring character.

Also if anyone is playing/has played judgment.... do you agree with me that Yagami is one of the most boring protagonists? He's just very plain and his look doesn't suit his attitude at all. I thought he might grow on me over time but so far it hasn't happen.

"cool" isn't really the word i'd use to describe oda tbh

kiryu does get tons of money by the time you finish the taxi missions though

you just have to remember that customers directly give you tips and you have to find an ATM to collect the rest

also i completely forgot that saejima’s prison chapter in y5 has a totally different problem than the one in y4: 4’s is way too hard, where 5’s is just kind of boring

finally looked up where i get the piece of wood i need to do more of the homeless digging quest thing for saejima and, i don't really consider this a spoiler, it's a prize for the batting cages. specifically you need like a B rank on the normal course, so i figure, sure, okay, i've done harder ones.

i did the math and to get even a B rank, you have to either hit the tiny spot in the seams between panels where three overlap multiple times, or, if you can hit the seams between two panels, you can only miss four times. you basically can never miss the tiny target. gonna be at this for awhile lmao

lol, yeah. i didn't record the actual squares they were in, just the direction they'd travel and if they were half steps. I had this whole system using hashes and stuff. gamer notes ftw

I think that's just kiwami 2 and maybe kiwami though? y4 is more about aiming for an exact spot and 0's completion metric is the worst. I can't remember kiwami's because I just know it felt like such a relief after 0s. skipped the cages in 3 but I assume they were more like 4.

kiwami 2, judgment, and 6 all have the “ball moves in a 3x3 grid, hit the right spot” kind of baseball, and the ball actually does have a different color glow on its way to you depending on the pitch type which helps with sightreading a course

0, k1, 3, 4, and 5 all have the “aim for a part of the scoreboard and time it right” sort (and fotns’ bikerball is a variant on that)

5 also has shinada baseball which is sort of a hybrid of the two but you can grind stats to become nigh unstoppable which is fun

making a note of the pitch types is a lot more handy in the dragon engine games, because the old engine baseball is only going to curve left, curve right, or be a fastball which is easy enough to see visually, the timing you just sort of have to learn

like i said, i’ve played too much drat yakuza baseball lol

Shinada's story is where Y5 started losing me. It's fine on its own but you could just remove it from Y5 and not much would be lost. They could have still used something like that in a later or different game cause I think the story itself has its moments but in the context of Y5 it's really where I started souring on it.

Shinada’s story is a really good complement to Haruka’s, i thought

both of them give you some perspective into how the Tojo/Omi conflict has an impact on the lives of people who aren’t even directly involved, which is something the series really hadn’t gotten into all that much in earlier games

Big time spoilers for Yakuza 6 and Yakuza 7

I really thought them including Kiryu in Yakuza 7 would be a complete betrayal of the end of 6 but they actually did it really well. It makes sense that since Kiryu's deal was with the shadowy old school politician that he'd be allowed to interfere slighly to help you against the young gun usurper. Also the fight with him going through all his forms was loving sick and the animation of him looking like Shenron was awesome.

He also shows up at the two most perfect times, especially outside the Bleach Japan building where the party and you the player are getting really uncomfortable with how off the rails Ichi is going.
