Fun beaver fact: They are very particular about what type of trees they cut down. Going so far as to search them out in the forest, leaving much closer, less desired trees untouched.

Big birch fans.

hey bebe

Spent all day Friday on a porch on the Atlantic, reading for 8-9 hours. Wind blew constantly for over 24-hours, like a low-grade gale. Heavy surf too.

Came in for dinner & was effectively deaf in my right ear, and the 'normal' tinnitus (have it in both ears at least 40-years) was ramped up to 11.

Left ear tinnitus & hearing was unaffected. Heading to Dr Wednesday for an appt made 2-months ago so now this is the thing. If my experience with tinnitus & cochlear nerve damage is any indication, the white noise wiped out a bunch more (high-frequency) hairs & its permanent. We'll see

Speaking of beavers, the largest Buc-ee's (truck stop) outside of Texas recently opened near where i live. And nearly all my coworkers have made a trip up there and they all have Buc-ee's shirts and hats and drinking cups now.

I actually do like the logo, I think it's cute, but you're still making a dedicated 20-30 mile trip and spending money to visit and advertise for a truck stop chain. It just seems very weird to me

Some people are crazy about their truck stop/gas station loyalty. There’s some kind of holy war in parts of the northeast between Wawa and Sheetz.

I could go on for days about the "Beaver Wasteland". This vast area the local beavers flooded. Huge operation.

Here's beaver story: One day I was hiking around the wasteland, trying to find the mythical dry crossing.... in the middle of the forest, no trails or paths or anything, just walking through the forest on a compass point.

And I crest this hill and on the other side, out of nowhere, is a trail, clear as day. Well defined. It freaks me out at first because I'm quite literally in the middle of nowhere, and all of sudden there is a trail.

I follow it, vary warily (I'm actually nervous about marijuana grows out in the forest), and it goes down the hill. Down down down until it comes to water (the wasteland), and lo, I see clear as day, a channel in the water. Which I follow and it leads to the big giant beaver dam (a huge structure), and I realize: That was a beaver trail. They are cutting down trees and then dragging them into the water, and then floating them up the channel they dug to the big dam.

It was a whole operation out there!

The beaver dam itself was the only crossing through the Beaver Wasteland, and believe me I searched and searched for anything else..... nothing.

The beaver dam was formidable. 10 feet high, 100 feet long, 5 feet wide. Walking on it was always dicey of course, AND their gigantic beaver lodge was right there so I was always slightly worried they might get pissed and attack, but that never happened.

My beaver stories are all from 1997-1999; I went back to the beaver dam in 2021 and was shocked at how different everything was. The giant beaver lodge was gone. The dam was now like part of the ground, it had multiple trees growing in it and was totally covered in plants. In fact you had to look closely to even see it was a dam. The wasteland, however, remained.

One night I had this huge party, a big fire in the firepit by the lake, a keg, loud music, general rowdiness, etc.

Many hours later..... in the wee of the morning the party is over, people are crashed, and I am on the dock filling a bucket with water to put out the fire completely (I take fire safety seriously) and I see this dark shape coming right at me in the lake... I'm wasted of course so I rub my eyes to check if I am seeing stuff, but not, this black shape is coming right at me....

A beaver pokes his head up, we make eye contact, he turns around and completely splashes me with his tail. Direct hit. I can only stand there and take it.

Here's a different beaver lodge (affiliated with the main lodge, I assume, as it was in the contiguous beaver wasteland)

I've never been that close to a beaver, see them and their actions regularly while hiking tho. Absolutely wild animals, love them

I had a surprisingly nice easy day at work today. You all seemed to like pictures of Lilac, so here's some pictures of the other two pets.

Sydney wanted to go for a walk today but was disappointed by how hot it was. She lied down for a solid 30 minutes, turning our short walk into a 2 hour affair.

Cocoa did her best cat loaf impression.

Lilac was very sleepy and fluffy.

Two sleepy kitties (they usually don't like to sleep so close to one another.)
