I'm reminded of an article I read that says people mostly watch videos with the sound off. Probably shouldn't have opened the video with "hi there it's Keir, I've been a Conservative voter all my life and I voted for Boris and Brexit."

Interestingly I did a retweet the other day which has a video, and my tweet has almost 60,000 impressions, and ~350 retweets.

It has *11* media clicks from all of that. And it doesn't even have subtitles (though the important bit of what's being said is in the body of the tweet itself).

https://twitter.com/WhatEvil/status/1333085807423463428?s=20

Given that I'm reasonably sure you need to click on the vid to get the sound, almost 100% of people who saw this did not listen to the sound. Just thought that was really interesting.

Do what makes you happy, friend. Don't let others (or your fears of how others might react) hold you back - if they can't accept the true you then they likely weren't worth keeping around anyway. It's never too late.

I assume it's the same as in Canada, i.e. completely loving backwards. We have "Interac" transfers here but that only goes up to $3000 - which admittedly is fine for most stuff but when you have say, a deposit on a rental, or want to buy a car or something then yeah it's physical cheque or bank draft only. Not only that you have to pay to get cheques, they're like a couple of dollars each.

Also Interac transfers are more of a faff - you have to enter a password then give that password to the other person and they have to enter it.

Also bank accounts are not free - $17/month for a current account (though they refund it if you keep the balance above $4k).

Oh and there's a weird unequivalence of debit and credit cards - most stuff like online payments is credit cards only. Similarly for weird random stuff like contactless parking meters - if you don't have a credit card you literally can't pay for some things.

The thing I've learned about whiskey (from having been given a glass a few times by friends who are whiskey-heads) is that I only like the really expensive stuff, at the £100+ per bottle end.

Therefore I do not drink whiskey, because gently caress paying that much. Rum is cheaper and nicer.

Cognac is nice, but from my very limited experience of trying cognacs, I think that the slightly cheaper stuff is actually nicer than the really long-aged stuff.

I mean there is also the whole thing where the laser-targeted ad system on facebook allowed Cambridge Analytica and other politically malicious entities (such as the Conservative Party) are able to reach directly into racist's brains with lies and manipulate them into doing what they want.

Like you can literally, if you know enough about a person, target an advert specifically at them. You can select people within an age range and a gender and a household status (e.g. "empty nester"), by device use, within a particular postcode, etc. etc. and in fact people in Labour HQ used it to target Corbyn to trick him into thinking that Labour ads were running widely.

It was pointed out earlier on twitter that Emilie Oldknow helped allow Rod Liddle to stay in Labour (at least initially) after he did a massive Islamophobia. It was in the leaked report but I had missed this previously:

quote:

John Stolliday, then head of governance and legal, asked colleague Emilie Oldknow if journalist Rod Liddle could be suspended after Mr Liddle wrote in The Spectator that anti-semitism was “absolutely endemic” among Muslims due to an “envy” of Jewish people.

Ms Oldknow and former leader Jeremy Corbyn’s chief of staff Simon Fletcher agreed that they should suspend him. But two days later, Mr Stolliday emailed Ms Oldknow to say: “Apparently Rod Liddle is chummy with [former Labour MP] Ian Austin & by extension TW [then deputy Labour leader Tom Watson].

“I still want to [suspend Liddle] but we’re not under pressure to do it — so may just sit on it for now.”

Mr Liddle was suspended a week later, on 12 May 2016, and he resigned that September.

Yeah, same here, parents were vegetarian from before I was born so I have never had a "traditional" christmas dinner.

What we've typically had over the years was a sort of vegetarian buffet thing with lots of different foods and nibbles. My Mum used to make a cheese and onion flan almost every year, plus other stuff like veggie sausage rolls, a bean and rice salad thing, then there would be crisps and nuts and twiglets and stuff plus salad veg to go with. Just loads of comfort food really.

My last christmas in the UK we all went round to my brother's house and he and I had both made pizza dough, and used each of our countertop pizza ovens to make like 4 big christmassy pizzas. Chestnuts go really well on pizza.

Previously we also had a "Christmas Pie" as a main. I think it was this one or something very similar:

https://www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/butternut-squash-spinach-and-goats-cheese-pie/

Butternut squash, goat's cheese, pine nuts, spinach, garlic, red onions and Moroccan spices. Really decadent and epic enough for a Christmas main IMO.

The best way to cook broccoli is to get a nice hot pan (like, 7 out of 10 on your stove settings) with just a little oil (helps if the pan is cast iron or non-stick) and sear it til you get some nice charring. Brings out the flavour, doesn't make it turn to mush like with boiling and it'll even cook the stalks decently.

Some of you may remember that a year ago Corbyn proposed to plant 2 billion trees in 20 years and it was dismissed as unachievable, pie-in-the-sky nonsense from our cursed commentariat.

Canada has just announced it'll plant 2 billion trees in 10 years, and we have half the population over here.

https://www.canada.ca/en/natural-resources-canada/news/2020/12/minister-oregan-launches-canadas-plan-to-plant-two-billion-trees.html

quote:

Today, the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, launched the Government of Canada’s plan to plant two billion trees over 10 years, with an investment of $3.16 billion. Meeting this commitment will help Canada address climate change by reducing carbon pollution and is a key part of Canada’s efforts to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

There is no path to net-zero emissions that does not involve our forests. Planting trees is a natural climate solution that reduces emissions while providing other benefits such as improved air and water quality, particularly in urban settings; decreased risk of wildland fire to rural communities and support for biodiversity. It also provides spaces for recreational opportunities that improve quality of life and form part of our Canadian identity.

Canada’s plan to plant two billion trees over the next ten years is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 12 megatonnes by 2050. It will create up to 4,300 good jobs.....

Did like 5 hours of food prep on Christmas Eve including chopping up all the veg, parboiling the taters, making stuffing balls (homemade, not from a mix) ready to go into the oven and making the filling for that blue cheese & spinach chestnut en croute that somebody posted before:

So all I had to do on the day was roll out the (store-bought) pastry, fill it with the filling, seal it up, and bung stuff in the oven (plus like, peas and stuff on the stove). Worked really well and the food turned out great.

That chestnut en croute thing is not lying when it says "serves 8" - was bloody huge. Tasty though so I'll be happy to eat it for the next 3 days.

Had a good chat with my Dad today, and it's the first time we've really gotten into much specific politics.

He's broadly a lefty, thought that Corbyn was genuine and principled but thinks that he possibly didn't have the steel for the top job... which in hindsight I also think. He agreed with me that the right wing of the Labour party are awful people, and that Corbyn mainly lost because of the press pushing the false antisemitism narrative and that "there's a big difference between being anti-Israel and being antisemitic" which it something he came out with himself without any prompting or leading from me, so he's pretty switched on compared to most boomers.

BUT he did say that he thinks that maybe Starmer is being shrewd by laying low and not being labelled a "loony left socialist" (he put air-quotes around it, so he wasn't saying that he thinks being socialist is a bad thing), I said "well no, he isn't one" and we had a bit of a chat more generally - I mentioned that I think the press aren't attacking him because it's more convenient to keep him around, since they know he's not a threat. He didn't disagree but he didn't exactly agree either.

I definitely wouldn't say he's a Starmer "fan" exactly but I think he's giving Starmer much more credit than I am.

Still, it was a good chat. He echoed many sentiments I've had, like thinking "Am I loving crazy? Is nobody else seeing this poo poo?" but then finding more of a left-wing presence and people calling out the Tories etc. and feeling sane again, as well as just generally wanting a fairer world. He'd also picked up on the stuff that's happening with the Tories and the press attacking anybody with actual principles and I told him to look out for people getting called "Woke" and about "Virtue Signalling" as a dogwhistle.

He also said that he thinks the entire media is corrupt and working for the establishment "with the possible exception of the Guardian" and I laughed a bit and said "I wouldn't be so sure about that" and told him about some of the stuff in this article:

https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-09-11-how-the-uk-security-services-neutralised-the-countrys-leading-liberal-newspaper/

Which I have now sent to him - it's a good read btw if any of you haven't seen it, about how the Graun is in bed with the security services etc.
