Numbers fly out of heads, you level up, and there's epic swords. Verdict RPG.

the greatest feeling in all of the lands is when you have unequivocally completed every quest, maxed out every stat, achieved the highest level, have all of the most epic gear, have every collectible, filled out every map, and you finally go and mop the floor with the ending boss of a good RPG.

the video game equivalent of getting a text that says "we need to talk" is when you go to beat Necrosaro, you hear the dragon quest "curse" noise, and the message display says "Sorry to inform you, but ADVENTURE LOG 1 has been erased."

I've been playing the new Siege of Dragonspear expansion for Baldur's Gate and I go between absolutely hating it and kind of liking it. Sometimes it's filled with terrible Marvel quip humor sometimes it's actually well written and genuinely funny. Sometimes the encounter design is insanely tight and takes all my resources and strategic might to get through and other times they just plop a horde of enemies down and you have to grind through it. Also there's numerous lore violations and all the cool ideas in the plot are obscured with D&D setting lingo you'd have to have read 200 terrible novels to be able to understand

I was glad to find out that Yakuza 7 has a postgame dungeon that's level 99+. One of the first things I thought of when I heard that it was a JPRGlike was if you'd be able to optionally kill god at the end.

Star Ocean: The Second Story had one of the greatest secret dungeon/secret endboss combos of all time. Instead of doing all the secret content and crushing the end-boss, you got an amulet that unlocked his true potential and he became a loving god

Also seconding tactical RPGs

my GF loves JRPGs but hasn't ever played a DQ, kind of torn between playing V, VIII or XI first...thoughts? V is still my favorite SNES rpg but VIII/XI are undeniably huge, comfy games that I would also love to replay anyway...
