The platforms themselves are usually transparent but also don't really seem to care about protecting anyone. On MTurk this means that the money earned for a task will be the money you get, but some people post tasks that just pay insanely low amounts, and some people will post tasks and lie about their duration. For Mturk this is resolved by user implemented rating systems where mturkers rate requesters based on how well they pay etc. So if you go in blindly, you will probably not do great, but if you join some MTurk communities, get the right scripts etc. it shouldn't be too risky.
