I made a list a week or two ago on Discord, but I can't be assed to search for it, so I'm just gonna make a new one based on how I'm feeling at the moment.

morallyobjected's Top 10 Games in 2020

10. Paper Mario and the Origami King
The game was a little hand-holdy like a lot of Nintendo games are these days, but the writing was so on point, and goddamn I was not expecting (mid-to-late-game spoilers Bobby suicide what the gently caress). The battle system was not my favourite (Thousand Year Door still the best), but there was so much life and personality in this game it's hard to get hung up on it. Sailing around exploring a la Wind Waker was fun too and probably one of my favourite bits of the game.

9. Spider-Man: Miles Morales
This was a great game with a lot of heart/character and they really improved on the fundamentals of the original game in a lot of ways. I think the story (or at least the main villain) was a little less compelling and I missed some of the gadgets from the first game, but the new venom powers were fun to play with and it was cool to swing around New York and see BLM murals and Miles communicate with a deaf character using ASL and neat little poo poo like that.

8. Tony Hawk 1+2
Blast from the past! Had pretty much everything I wanted in a remaster and I can only hope that 3+4 is on the way some time (realistically, 3 and 4 would probably need to be their own games. I feel like they got bigger after 2 and 4 was more of an open world thing I think). The soundtrack was dope and it seems like they got most of the big hits from the original. The only thing that's dumb is the levelling system. If they ever fix it I'd consider getting to level 100 but grinding it out doing multiplayer or some of the more extreme challenges is just not up my alley.

7. Astro's Playroom
This is one of the most cool-as-hell games I've ever played, and it's kind of like VR in that it's no good watching someone else play it--you have to experience it yourself or there's no point. The way it uses the features of the Dualsense controller is insane and no one who gets a PS5 should skip over it. Any game that doesn't use the haptics after this is going to feel like a disappointment.

6. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
I fell off AC: NH pretty hard after a couple months, but it literally got me though the first part of quarantine. It's just a very positive game with a relaxing atmosphere and so much to do. I enjoyed getting everything set up the way I wanted and got some cool landscaping ideas from seeing other people's islands. I don't know if I'll ever go back to it, but it was the game I needed at the time.

5. Demon's Souls
The original Souls game, and honestly probably the easiest. It wasn't without its share of tedium, but it looks amazing and has the distinction of being the only Souls game where I've been able to and cared to make magic work. And oh man there's nothing better than watching boss health melt away with Firestorm. The atmosphere was great (Upper Latria was a spectacle), and even though they made the mistake of including world 5, I'm willing to forgive them. Dragon Bone Smasher for life.

4. Persona 5
I'm not even done with this one yet; however, I'd never played a Persona game before and I can almost guarantee I will be getting every Persona game after this one. The calendar system and relationship stuff is great, and the battles are fun enough. It is definitely one of the most stylish RPGs I've ever seen and the soundtrack is bangin'.

3. Ghost of Tsushima
I had like zero hype for this game when I saw the trailer (I didn't think it was going to be bad or anything, just I think I was coming straight off Sekiro, so it was like "Another one? And not made by From?"), but after hearing a bunch of positive reports about it I decided to check it out and man this game is fun as hell, and it's a candidate for best free post-game update with Legends mode. TLOU2 has better graphics, but the art direction and use of colour in this one was fantastic.

2. Final Fantasy VII Remake
This was a hard one, because while I think Ghost of Tsushima was a better made game in a lot of respects (those load times on a base PS4 are incredible, and the multiplayer additions were excellent), I just feel like this deserves the nod. The combat is a blast, and quite honestly it exceeded every expectation I had for it (and I think pretty much every expectation everyone else had for it, too). They kept so much of the goofy poo poo, and while honestly I'm mostly lukewarm about FF7 as a whole, things like the crossdressing in Wall Market and the stairs bit at Shinra HQ are the kind of things I enjoy most--when the game has character and charm. We're not getting Part 2 until like 2022 at the earliest, but I'm excited for it.

1. The Last of Us Part 2
There was never any other option. Every piece of this game is brilliant--the gameplay additions/revisions, the plot, the visuals. Even more so because it made a bunch of chuds world wide cry since one main character is a gay woman and the other one is fuckin' ripped as hell. Nobody does narrative games like Naughty Dog, and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Honourable Mentions

Star Wars: Squadrons
This game was fun as hell for Dogfight multiplayer and if they had just decided to give it any real post-launch support by fixing the loving insane AI for fleet battles or adding more maps it could have easily been one of the best games all year. It's so loving ironic that EA ruined what would have otherwise been one of the greatest games by NOT giving it any DLC. Still was a great pick up at $40 though and I played it a lot.

BugSnax
Talkin' bout BugSnax! This game was pretty much everything I thought it was going to be, coming from Octodad devs, gameplay-wise. But! the voice acting/characters were incredibly well done I thought, and the story just went :ohdear: :spooky: at the end.

New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
I just wanted a simple 2D Mario platformer and this game delivered on that. I never had a WiiU, so I picked this up with some Christmas Cash and I haven't been disappointed so far. Haven't even touched Luigi U yet.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled
I held off on getting this because I didn't know if I really wanted it, but it was on sale so I decided to pull the trigger and it's been a real fun time so far. The controls are a little different than I remember them feeling, but this is still the best kart racing game for me, Mario Kart be damned. I'm looking forward to seeing the levels from the other CTR games as I never really played any of them, so that'll be new.

1 - Persona 5 Royal: Punishing those who abuse their power to satisfy their own selfishness and destroy the lives of those they control is such a powerful and necessary fantasy in 2020

this really sums up I think why Persona 5 resonated with me this year. I am so tired of adults (ostensibly people who are supposed to be role models for kids) continually do selfish bullshit that harms children/others and then act like it's their god-given right to do it. I blazed through it in like a week because I just could not put it down

to be fair, they only do that after they mentally stomp on like four different major corrupt figures of power and the entire public as a whole, nullify the results of an election, then attack and dethrone god

Is Uncharted 4 that good? Sony must have ruined it for me by giving me the first three games, which I didn’t enjoy, for free.

Uncharted 4 is easily the best one gameplay-wise, with the grappling hook and stealth options. I came to appreciate the story more over time (I still hate Sam), but it looks and feels incredible regardless. Lost Legacy is also a cool, smaller, more focused version of it with open world elements

And Life is Strange Before the Storm!

I really wish Life Is Strange 2 had been better. I appreciate them being willing to make very strong statements re: police brutality, racism, etc., but the actual writing/voice acting just wasn't anywhere near the quality of the first game and Daniel's telekinesis didn't have as interesting an effect on the combination of gameplay and plot as Max's time travelling or the faceoffs in Before the Storm

I absolutely want to play Control at some point but my PS4 isn't a Pro and my PC is due for an upgrade soon so it may be one of those games I end up having to revisit in a couple years on PS5.

it ran fine on my base PS4, save for the lag when coming out of menus, but that happens even on PS5 so.

It's funny that Fall Guys was the internet's darling for about 2 weeks before it completely had its thunder stolen by a mobile game that came out 2 years ago

I never liked the controls in Fall Guys. I get that it was supposed to be kinda floaty or whatever but it just felt bad to me. there were a lot of times it felt like I would fall or something due to that rather than something I had actual control over.

I can't make sense of that username scatter thing. I'm nearest to Doom Eternal, Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium, and Death Stranding, but only one of those is on my list. I'm closest to Stux but we only have two games in common on our list, Death Stranding and Blasphemous (two really good games).

I don't know what it means either, but I found myself, so that's cool

once you understand that the data is just a two-dimensional projection of a 14-dimensional object, it becomes quite clear, you see.

Look, PCAs aren't simple graphs and I did my best

tbh I kinda hate them and think they're some of the least useful common plots but everybody else in the world seems to like them so they keep making them

please know I wasn't disrespecting you but the idea of trying to condense 10+ dimensions of data into a useful 2-dimensional plot. fun in theory, but good luck trying to tell anyone what it means.

side note if you like scratching your head at useless data representations, please feel free to join in on the fun in the awful graphs/charts thread
