so this game is fun but man you can just feel where they cut stuff more acutely than any other game I've played

like every interaction you have with Meredith Stout screams "this character was gonna be way more important/a romance option but we ran out of time"

You never played KOTOR 2 or VtMB? There were even massive player led projects to restore unused content in those games. The missing content is blatantly obvious (and restorable) too since IIRC they essentially commented out stuff to get the game out the door faster.

Also half the outcomes for that quest have Anthony Gilchrist overcome Meredith Stout, so if she had a bigger role I don't think they would have made one of the outcomes of the first time you meet her result in her being bumped off by a rival.

I started VtMB but bounced off it, I might try it again with the full mod experience

And I dunno, it does feel a little weird that like, she's apparently the only character in the whole game who V can have a fling with but nothing more outside of like, unnamed joytoys. Why go through the trouble with just that one character if it wasn't a remnant of something else? Although if she's at the bottom of the ocean that would make it difficult to write a larger story for her.

Do you have the Gorilla Arms mod?

Every BotB mission besides the first assumes that your character is actually built to fight in unarmed melee, and a key part of your damage output will be the Gorilla Arms mod. You can get by with -just- the Gorilla Arms if your character built is aimed at something else, but be prepared for a frustrating experience as it will only take two or three hits from them to knock you out.

Another thing to watch out for is whether the mission is listed as "Moderate" for your current level. The opponents have a set level and being significantly under that won't do you any favors.

Still, be prepared for long slugging matches. I remember the finale for me being a succession of 1x Heavy Punch followed by 3-4 light punches and a period of dodging, and each cycle took maybe 4-5% off my opponents health. 10 if I was lucky with crits.

yeah I tried it once at very hard, got my rear end beat, then came back at moderate and ... got my rear end beat. I really don't have much invested in unarmed so that's prolly the issue!

Basic Chunnel posted:

Further from my previous effortpost re: how this game compares to TW3, what's really sticking in my craw as I play through the third act (beyond CTDs I keep hitting in Chippin' In) is how often sidequests seem to present up-or-down choices not on how to approach a task, but whether the task is accepted at all. Say what you will about TW3, the game was really successful in presenting quest approach as a function of how Geralt moves within the world. That is, when Geralt is presented with a sketchy request, the game implicitly asks the player to consider whether it is a smart, wise or worthwhile decision to entertain. It was really effective not only in making those decisions feel weighty (often weighing mercy and good intentions against the responsibilities and credo of Witchering) but made saying no to people feel like a valid choice. Geralt could call bullshit, and consequences would follow.

It really doesn't feel like CP has that, to be honest. The majority of the time, when I'm allowed to make V skeptical or canny, it feels more like the game is asking me do you want to see this content or not, and that's not a fun thing to be asked, as a player. The only real option is to let V be a sucker for everybody, knowing that I'm going to survive and might be able get even at some point after I've played through the quest. There is exactly one minor quest that seems explicitly designed to reward V for not playing along with a guy who literally accosts him on the street. Feels bad, man.

yeah it's very much "the character would not be stupid enough to do these things except for the fact that they're the most dangerous person in the gameworld and can handle any betrayal by spamming heals and the gun they found that's twice as good as anyone else's gun"

The gig Hot merchandise is kind of unsatisfactory. A weapons merchant Rebeca has opened a shop that deals in stolen / hacked goods and Rogue wants her taken out. But when you read a shard on her, you find out

that some mystery person has taken her daughter hostage and is sending her their fingers to extort Rebeca into working with her. Killing her after reading this seems pretty drat unfair. Even taking her alive feels bad. What will Rogue do with her? How will her daughter end up?

This could've been honestly a whole bigger quest where you find this stuff out and work with Rebeca to get rid of the goons in her shop and rescue the daughter / find out who is blackmailing her. It's honestly a pretty good reminder that sometimes these gigs are more than just to kill whoever the fixer wants you to kill. Or at least they can be if you read the info! All in all I was left with an unsatisfactory feeling and a bad taste of this one.

A thing I really like about this game after thinking about it for a bit post-ending is that the stakes are surprisingly personal. Really, if you’re an average citizen in Night City, V’s whole quest has very little chance of affecting you at all. Maybe they’re dimly aware of you as Kerry Eurodyne’s friend who showed up in an interview and played a the Samurai reunion concert but everything else you do just kind of blends into the overall wildness of Night City.

Where V really makes an effect is in the lives of individuals, mostly her friends and family. Witcher 3 kinda did that but it also gave you an enormous amount of control over world-shaking events — assassinations and the like. Cyberpunk keeps the stakes surprisingly low —- in my ending I ignored the whole Arasaka succession thing in favor of going off with V’s friends and girlfriend and I think it really benefits from that.

Do you play in a completionist way where you do everything you can until you have to progress the main plot? I did and every single Kerry mission happened after I had did most other content in the game, one after another. I even had a side quest for like 50 hours that was like "do missions until wait for so and so to be available to contact." Turns out that person is tied to the Kerry stuff. there's just no way to meet him without progressing one of the later main quests. I went to his home and killed his robots before I knew he existed lol.

Yeah the weird thing about Kerry’s missions is they become accessible immediately after V’s condition becomes obviously really horrible, so there’s more of the ol’ ludonarrative dissonance than usual

I don't think it should be possible to be FRIENDLY with any of them, but it would be nice if they kept track of how badly you wrecked their poo poo.
