I'd give it to the 110 actually.

Cutting edge design at the time that used multiple engines to achieve results that single-engined fighters couldn't match.

Mediocre maneuverability but that's OK since it's main job is to go fast and catch bombers.

Final versions have a gently caress load of radar in order to let it find and kill enemies in ways that were nigh-magical at the time (night time for the Bf-110, BVR for the F-14).

Has a backseater that ultimately ends up being there to handle sensor overload while the pilot focuses on flying and shooting.

Solid enough design that it was able to continue in service well past what the designers would have probably considered the sell-by date.

Yeah but like... the Me-210 is better, and has two defensive guns in turrets mounted in the side of the fuselage and that's kind of like having Jester play Missile Command while waiting for active threats to show up.

The 210 was an utter piece of poo poo even by German piece of poo poo equipment standards, to the point they actually gave up on it.

The 410 was the successful attempt at a 110 replacement.

I had the chance to see a 110 in person a few years ago. There is one in a small private museum in Denmark. I'm absolutely certain that it is still there since they assembled it inside the main display building and didn't realize they had built it around a support beam until it was too late to go back and change things.

I can try to dig up the info of the place if someone wants to take a look.

That's what I was thinking of, but I guess my point stands of the Me-210 without the teething issues, which is what led to the 410 regardless.

The 210A was a worthless piece of poo poo, the 210C was absolutely fine but AIUI it was basically backporting the changes the 410 made to the design onto the 210. As a result, the Germans built very few but it had a reasonably successful second life in Hungary as the 210Ca because it used the same DB605 engines as the Bf 109Gs they were also license building. Initially two thirds of the 210Cas built went to Germany and they saw a bit of use in 1943 but in the end they were all or mostly all returned to Hungary as attrition replacements and flew as light bombers until the end of the war in Europe. Hungary also used them as heavy day interceptors until the pressure from USAAF escorts was too much, but they didn't have the tech for onboard radars and their experiments with searchlight guided intercepts on RAF night bombers were... Inefficient.

Is the first one French or British? I just ask because it looks like a Bristol Fighter F.2b and I did not know the French used them.

As for best/favourite fighter from the same era I will always have a soft spot for the S.E.5a: odd looking but in an interesting way and a really good all-rounder. Not a fighter but my favourite airplane of all time is and will always be the De Havilland Mosquito: gorgeous, fast, and with a really interesting wood composite construction method.

Pretty sure it's French, because the dot in the center of the roundel looks darker than the one on the outside ring. That's usually how red vs blue photographed with those in B&W pics.
