Counting all 2018 races were they both finished, Max outscored Dan 8 times (Spain, Canada, France, Singapore, Russia, Japan, Brazil, Abu D.) vs. 3 (Australia, China, Monaco). You could give Silverstone to Ric since Max retired late into the race and technically came 15th, but whatever.

Max's only wins came when ric dnf, while every Dan win was when max finished. Sounds like Max can only win when his team mate is either dnf due to rbr being poo poo (Dan) or when rbr fail to get the best out the other driver (albon, gas). I.e. a fraud

Also lol at rbr reliability in that season. Complaining about Merc being op when your car is poo poo and your engine supplier uses cheap wine as lubricant

With major reg changes coming up you absolutely want Hamilton to be there to help with car development. You can say that the car is the best on the grid (it obviously is) but the input he will have given will have done a lot to make that happen - Russel is clearly waiting in the wings, but he doesn't have the experience to provide reliable feedback (although he is clearly a thinking driver, when he talks through a lap it is clear he switched on about everything). Bottas isn't as poo poo as he could be, but you can't build the team around his feedback.

A 2 year deal gives them both a lot - Lewis gets 2 cracks at the all time and it brings Merc continuity through the regs change.

People would lose their poo poo but one way to solve it would be "If you go off where there would have been gravel you have to do a drive through".

Bit like the MotoGP long lap.

This would be really interesting to see, but teams would probably argue the fact and say not all tyres were over the line and make it a horrible drawn out issue. You would have to pair it with an instant system ala goal line tech and maybe even a review system like cricket where each team has to request a review almost instantly and only has a limited number.

Gravel is instant.

Imagine actually thinking that rich energy might actually come through with some cash.

Actually it is far more likely that the new owners will sign the contract knowing the cash won't come through, but will leverage it to take out loans on the team. They get money, rich energy gets some more publicity for almost nothing, and the team goes down the drain in 18 months.

So I feel bad for Fernando who is forced to do such dangerous low class activities as bicycling.

From his book Newey seems consider himself more of an overall car designer and packaging designer rather than an aero specialist - I don't know how true that is. It's interesting that there doesn't seem to be any new celeb engineers of the younger generation, is that because it is now so team orientated? Or have the teams managed to suppress the hot shot engineer phenomenon to keep salaries down?

Lewis might not be as fast as he used to be, but he is the person you have to beat to win, and that is a mental barrier to your opponents in itself

My theory for binotto heading up the Ferrari team is that they realised passion alone wasn't doing anything for them so picked the most passionless man in Italy, without considering if he was actually any good. He is not.

Then again, Italians have cargo culted Austria before, with similar results.

I'm not saying he's right (and he had a major fuckup at McL with the shrink fit 2003 car) but you can see how an engine company would easily be cowed by them. John Barnard was similarly influential, but I don't think he got it wrong with engines much, even if Piero Ferrari tried to build an entire new car behind his back.

I might get Barnard's autobiography, the whole design a Ferrari but not relocate thing is pretty mad and seems like it would be a fun read

Dts3 seems really straightjacketed by the format. Would have preferred they did a proper Monza ep, perhaps even make that an hour long, rather than splitting it up into sections in other eps. because they don't want to do a "season review" type thing they cut everything up, but the context is what makes things so interesting. Needs a Snyder cut/arrested development cut.

The grosjean ep felt weirdly over the top and also lacking in impact. You don't need to dress up the most visually impressive crash in modern f1 with slow Mo and cheat with the cuts to make it look long. I would have rather they showed it in real time because that brings home that it isn't loving Hollywood.

2020 was so nuts that DTS somehow can't measure up

Pretty clear that Netflix didn't put the boot into Ferrari because they want access in future years and it still looks like a clown show. You can't jack yourself off about passione and traditione when you are doing crape, and seb taking the piss out of the Ferrari team members who Enzo would have loving murdered is beautiful.

Dts3 was ok, but so full of missed opportunities. No mention of BLM, no mention of Russel, no slow mo of max going into walls, hardly any mention of covid, despite the world champion getting it. Almost no mention of the engineering. It's pretty much brrrr car go fast the documentary. And because all the on track action is shown cut together there is barely any of the actual w2w stuff that was actually happening.

I think it is just reversion to the norm of teammates competing for spotlight and parts

Back when lando was a novice and McLaren weren't likely to get much they could pal around, but that was never going to continue as much at the sharp end. I think they will probably be found friendlier in different teams
