Ahhhh the off season.

Those few months where my family stop asking me why the car is poo poo and instead ask me if next year's car will also be poo poo.

Never met him, think I once saw him in the office a couple of years ago. Similarly I once saw Patrick Head but it could easily also have been Meatloaf.

That reminds me of an amusing anecdote.

Years ago I was at a revival racing event at Thruxton with the family and a guy walked past wearing a Williams shirt. My mother in law said "He must work there too!".

She's a stupid old bitch.

From his book Newey seems consider himself more of an overall car designer and packaging designer rather than an aero specialist - I don't know how true that is. It's interesting that there doesn't seem to be any new celeb engineers of the younger generation, is that because it is now so team orientated? Or have the teams managed to suppress the hot shot engineer phenomenon to keep salaries down?

These days it's more about how many clever widget ideas you can design, build, test, and then manufacture at full size, which puts the onus more on the tech that allows you to do those things faster rather than coming up with the ideas in the first place.

That, but also making the cad processes faster, the "right first time" fitment better, the wind tunnel sequences more time efficient and repeatable, the data analysis more automated, etc etc.

Seems like the incoming performance related budget and wind tunnel restrictions might mitigate this for the weaker teams in the short term but risks entrenching bad habits. Ideally you want forward thinking enough management who invest the extra money in improving the processes rather than just seeking the quickest gains possible by brute forcing through the inefficiencies with money and tunnel time.

Exactly this. Teams who have traditionally solved problems by throwing more resource onto them are going to find themselves in trouble.

No reason you couldn't apply if something came up. They're often quite specialised and usually ask for some experience of working with wind tunnels, unless it's entry level.

Two wind tunnels (but only allowed to use one for F1 development by the regulations).

It's on the mid-to-high end you'd expect in the local area for software and engineering type positions. The only travelling I've ever had to do offsite is for presentations at universities etc.
