One of my favorite GPU memories was buying 4 1080s at microcenter to build a password cracking server for work. The customer service guy remarked "you must be making one hell of a gaming rig!" when I told him what they were for he made a face like I just stepped on a baby.

Unreal and games from 1998 - 2002 ran best with 3DFX Glide, which needed a Voodoo2 card, which was a card you inserted into your MB *in addition to* the main video card. Some games (like Diablo 2) were optimized to run on Glide, and on modern systems, need a sort of "emulation" called a Glide wrapper, unless the game has a modern version that's been patched up to work without needing such a thing. Glide died in the early 2000's.
