Around the time Revenge of the Sith was being made, Lucas mentioned that the entire saga that we see in the movies are just the part of the journal that was told to the Whills by R2-D2 a century or so after the events actually happened. The opening crawls are all excerpts from the "Star Wars" portion of the journal, that then transition to a visual depiction like going into the storybook in an old Disney movie.

so he wanted like Red Book of Westmarch frame to it. Im kinda curious how star wars had turned out/had blow up if Lucas had gone with his earlier weirder ideas.

Someone talk me into/out of getting into the High Republic, Audible has a deal where you can get 3 months for $3 (which would equate to 3 books, 1 per month).

In general adult novels and comic books interest me, young adult/children’s stuff substantially less so. Will the High Republic be nonsensical if I don’t go all-in? As for the comics, are they worth reading and is there a cost-effective way to do so?

Well, of course I know him.
He's me.
The first phase of the High Republic was decent enough. I read the three major adult novels and some of the comics and I was completely fine understanding everything. I skipped the second phase entirely because it takes place like a hundred years before phase one and I just wasn’t interested in that story.

I’m working through the phase three adult novels and tbh I’m struggling to finish them. The first one, Eye of Darkness, was just really dull and poorly written. The second, Temptation of the Force, is a definite upgrade but I’m still a bit checked out in general. The ending seems inevitable and the overall plot of this phase just isn’t grabbing me.

Overall, I’d say the High Republic has interesting characters that are unfortunately stuck in uninteresting plots.

Yeah, it's a shame the other two books didn't get the same treatment but apparently it just didn't sell well enough.

Gonna get this though. Stover's novelization almost makes the movie good retroactively.

Next step: get the audiobook, chop it up, slap the audio over some good looking screenshots, and edit them all into chronological order with the Siege of Mandalore Clone Wars arc for the ultimate experience.

I’m listening to the audiobook for THR Light of the Jedi, I’m about 2 chapters in. I like that the narrator actually does unique voices for the characters and it’s got sound effects and music, it’s a bit more immersive than the narrator just reading text off the page.

The novelization has Obi-Wan swordfighting a robot while riding a giant lizard, and does not have the siege of Mandalore or any of the characters at the siege of Mandalore, so idk why you'd include it.

I also think Stover's dense prose is completely unsuited for narration. His description of Anakin becoming Darth Vader works because of how visceral it is, but they'd be redundant accompanying the film's visuals expressing the same thing.

You could make an excellent moodboard/ AMV by putting the more abstract prose (like the dragon at the heart of a dead star, or the opening chapter) over appropriate footage from the film, but it's not going to work as a...graphic novel, basically?

Been feeling nostalgic, so I’ve been tracking down the old Dark Horse X-Wing comics for the first time in ages since I’ve already read the novels a million times.

Anyone have strong opinions on the Alphabet Squadron trilogy? I’ve heard it’s not a 1:1 equivalent of the old Rogue/Wraith books, but that it’s decent enough to read.

I kind of gave up on it in book 2. I didn’t think it was that good.

I haven't read them since release, but I really really liked those books. They're not 1:1 in the sense that there is way more character drama than I remember being in the RS/WS books (though there are still a number of cool flying setpieces) but it all hit pretty well for me. Probably some of my favorite nuCanon novels in general.

I thought his Shadow of the Sith was a decent fix-it for TROS and I'm at least curious to see what he does with the well-trod ground of Vader going for the ancient secret of Sith immortality once again.

My memory of the comics is that the beginning is kind of hit and miss but once they introduce the Isard/Pestage/Baron Fel storyline it kicks into GOAT status. Man, I haven’t read those in like 20 years, I should read them again too.

It’s a shame that the Poe Dameron comics seem to be forgotten, they were fine on a whole but that’s mainly because it has a decent start, lagging middle, but then ends on two extremely solid story arcs.

I haven’t read the Alphabet Squadron books (although I do own them) but the gimmick of “we all fly different ships” is a core gameplay mechanic of the Squadrons video game and that game is pretty cool.

Edit— I’m a little ways into the High Republic ‘Light of the Jedi’ audiobook and it’s pretty neat I guess? Like it’s juggling a bunch of characters but it’s not overwhelming, but I also have like 9 hours to go in the book. I don’t think “the impact” countdown has fully counted down yet. Marc Thompson keeps everything engaging and I like it.

Edit again — the countdown feels a little weird when I stop and think about it, like we’ve got Jedi on the ground on planets or in orbit of other moons in space stations when there’s under an hour until stuff hits the fan, and it feels like their response time is super duper fast from “oh snap there’s a problem” to “arriving in the system and evacuating people and responding to incoming debris” especially if the countdown to impact is under an hour. I’m not letting it derail my enjoyment and I’m willing to handwave it as being a much longer timeframe than the book is letting on, but the back of my head is noticing it.

I thought they were fine. I'm trying to work out if it's a me problem, or an author problem, but I don't think Alexander Freed writes action all that well? He's been very good at capturing character voices and their internal conflicts, but sometimes a bunch of poo poo happens and it takes me a few pages to register. I just finished Reign of the Empire and had the same problem.

I thought they were alright. It was a bit too much "everything sucks all the time" but I liked the characters and wanted to see what happened to them next. I've certainly read a lot worse books. It was nice reading some SW stuff that acknowledged people liked each other and that sex while not depicted did at least exist.

I put it between Wraith and Rogue, I think. They're fine. Stronger characters than Rogue but worse space action than both. I also appreciate that while I don't particularly like the nuCanon, they do engage with the challenges of shifting from a rebel organization to, like, having a government and what the gently caress do we do with surrendering soldiers or would-be defectors.

They also, imo, handle a particular annoying trope well. The noble Imperial professional soldier Red Baron/Soontir Fel analogue just looking out for the troops in his command actually still sucks rear end and is all down with genocide iirc

Just started Tales of the Underworld and it tied into Dark Disciple more than I was expecting. Kind of wild they picked up that story, which were originally supposed to be TCW episodes, 10 years later.

I can absolutely see that opening scene turning a lot of people off, just because it's so incomprehensible if you're not familiar with the specific story it's referencing. Even if a viewer went right from The Clone Wars to this, stuff like Ventress dying or having a relationship with a character who only really appeared in one episode would be pretty baffling developments.
