There have been marginalized groups in our times, folks. Women, minorities, trans people, the poor, the disabled, French people (fr*gs), and more. And there have been many battles over the protection of their rights and dignity. Now the eye turns to a new group of marginalized people: GAMERS. Specifically, romantically-challenged gamers. Otherwise known as "simps", "incels", or "virgins", depending on their temperament and severity. Long have they been the subject of ridicule and the brunt of jokes. But no longer! Twitch has recently announced that they are taking action to protect this vulnerable group from harassment as part of new official guidelines. Starting in January, you cannot call someone any of those things or use the terms in a derogatory manner. They will also be banning the use or creation of any emotes with these themes. The announcement of these changes was only a small part of a two hour community stream, and as part of a general tightening of content guidelines, but has dominated the community reaction thus far. The term simp (in re: "Someone who does way too much for a person they like"), meanwhile, is often used as generic trash talk rather than with any specific sexual connotation. I approve of this if only because any conversation involving the words simp or incel is likely to be insufferable. E: Simp is new to me, but it’s like every half year a new word crops up on the internet and I don’t know what it means but it’s clear people are getting real mad at each other and some of them are not nice
