Play Hunt with Goons on the Vermintide Discord https://discord.gg/3KU8g9HPUr https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r4JpEly21E Hunt: Showdown can be difficult to describe. It is a cooperateive multiplayer online FPS that incorporates elements of Battle Royales, loot shooters and survival games. It combines both PvP and PvE in a Zombie-infested Weird West setting. It is also a hell of a lot of fun. Taking place in 1895 Louisiana, you play as a Hunter, part of a secret society that tracks and kills supernatural creatures and beasts. Playing on a 1km x 1km map, your goal is to locate, kill, and banish Bosses, then loot their bounties and escape the map, all the while evading or eliminating rival hunters. The lore of characters, events, locations, items and wapons is extensive, if you're so inclined to read about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDkmyjWWmwU On PC, Hunt entered Early Access in February 2018, went full release in August 2019 and has enjoyed constant updates since. In fact, as of December 2020 the playerbase is the strongest it has ever been. Hunt is now also available for the PS4 and Xbox One. Hunt supports crossplay between these two consoles (they do not play against PC players) however the state of the community is unknown to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=803IUEgOBfE The gameplay and mechanics of Hunt can sometimes be a bit daunting for new players to take in. I will do my best to explain the basics. Basticle fucked around with this message at 17:42 on Dec 18, 2023 |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5Y00KR4LZo BOUNTY HUNT is the meat and potatoes of Hunt: Showdown. Up to 12 players will be put into a match. Players can be solo, or in a team of two or a team of three. Solos and Duos by default do not play with Trios but may opt in on the matchmaking screen for an extra challenge. The objective of Bounty Hunt is to investigate Clues which lead to the location of Bosses. Killing a boss will allow you to Banish it back to whatever supernatural realm it came from and to loot the Bounty and hopefully escape the map. Matches last one hour, however once all of the bounties have extracted a 5 minute timer is engaged. Escape before it runs out or you die. You must recruit a Hunter to play Bounty Hunt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb5rNdbdfNk QUICKPLAY is a solo-only battle royale-style mode. Up to 12 players match up and the goal is to discover (through Clues) and activate the Wellspring which will save your damned soul when completed. Whoever has the most energy when the timer runs out, or more likely, whoever is the last one alive is the winner. You are provided a Hunter for free and they start with a random weak weapon. Weapons and equipment are randomly located throughout the map. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci4cC9j4KTk TRIALS allows you to explore the entire map without any NPCs standing in their way and also has numerous Challenges available to launch at any time. TRAINING is an offline PvE-only mode perfect for new players to familiarize themselves with the controls and game mechanics of Hunt. Also allows newbies or veterans alike to test out their weapons and kit. Training allows you to exit the game at any time. Hunt has two different control schemes to chose from. Hunter and Gunslinger. The largest difference is that with Hunter you raise your weapon up (what basically amounts to hipfire) with one key (default is holding RMB) and aim down the sights with another (default is shift). With Gunslinger, when you're not sprinting, you always have your weapon up and only have to press one key to aim. There's more to it than that but you can read about the differences in detail here. Your Hunter's health is split into seperate Health Chunks. The Maximum total health is 150 HP. Large Chunks are 50 HP and Small Chunks are 25 HP. The first chunk (far left) is always large, the rest are random. Every time you are killed you permanently lose a chunk. Banishing a boss will fully replenish any lost chunks. Being revived and escaping will allow you to buy any lost health chunks back with Blood Bonds. There are five Damage Types:
How the various damage states look on the health meter. Bleeding, Burning & Poison all have three Conditions. Light, Medium and Intense. The more intense it is the more damage it does and for a longer period of time. If you are bleeding, regardless of Condition you will lose health over time until you press and hold the use key (default F) to stop the bleeding. If you are on fire you will lose health over time until you press and hold the use key to put out the fire. If you lose a full chunk then it is permanently lost. This is where things can get really confusing for new players. Completing missions earns you XP. XP levels up your Bloodline and Hunter Level. Bloodline is the progression system for you the player. Bloodline goes from Rank 0 to 100. Rising in Bloodline will unlock certain weapons, equipment and traits. When you reach Bloodline Rank 100 you may chose to Prestige. Prestiging does the following:
Hunter Level is the progression system for an individual Hunter in your inventory. Hunter level goes from 1 to 50. Once a Hunter reaches level 25 or higher you may Retire that Hunter. This gives a huge boost to your Bloodline. Each Hunter level grants you One Trait Point to be used on Traits (see section below). The in-game currencies consist of: Hunt Dollars are used to purchase weapons & equipment and hire Hunters. Blood Bonds are used for the following:
Each boss drops a number of Bounty that you can loot. 1 Bounty = 4 XP + 1 Hunt Dollar. Example of Rewards from the mission results screen. From Left to right is Bounty, XP, Hunt Dollars and Blood Bonds earned. If you fail to return from a mission alive all rewards (except Bounty) are halved. Hunters are purchased on the Recruitment screen. Hunters are randomly generated from a combination of preset faces, outfits, weapons, equipment and names. The cost of the Hunter is determined by the weapons and equipment that they come with. Hunters are further seperated into Three Tiers. Tier 1 Hunters typically have lighter colored clothing and are more easily spotted by enemies. They will come with one random trait and very low end weapons. Free Hunters are Tier 1 Hunters that come with no traits and Contraband weapons and equipment that cannot be sold, only discarded. Tier 2 Hunters have have darker colored clothing, come with two random traits and low to mid level equipment. Tier 3 Hunters have the darkest colored clothing, come with three random traits and mid to high level equipment. Legendary Hunters are special named Hunters with their own lore. These come with no equipment but always come with three random traits and always cost $333 to recruit. Legendary Hunters are unlocked permanently with Blood Bonds. Some are part of a specific paid DLC pack, many are not. Example of Legendary Hunters, showing some unlocked and able to be purchased with in-game dollars, some needing to be unlocked via Blood Bonds and some requiring a paid DLC. Example of the Hunter Recruitment screen, showing the tiers, cost, weapons, equipment, traits and health chunks. List of all weapons. To quote the wiki, Weapons in Hunt have the following stats quote:
Update 1.5 introduced various custom ammo types. I will add that info to the OP soon. The below information is still true, however. Shotgun Ammo is, obviously, used by Shotguns. Shotguns have a severe damage reduction over distance. Compact Ammo weapons generally have a lower bullet velocity, a lower effective range and will not penetrate walls. Medium Ammo weapons generally have a bullet velocity and effective range in between Compact and Large ammo weapons and will penetrate some walls, albeit at reduced damage. Large Ammo weapons generally have the highest bullet velocity and effective range and will penetrate some walls at full damage. Special Ammo resupplies crossbows, the Nitro and the Bomb Lance, as well as the Dolch 96 pistol (for balance reasons). Weapons fill one of three slot sizes. Hunters can equip a maximum of one Large & one Small or two Mediums. The Quartermaster trait allows a Large & Medium. Pistols and one-handed melee weapons fill a small slot. The Bornheim No. 3 is an example of a pistol. The Machette is an example of a one-handed melee weapon. It fills a small slot, but is much larger than the melee weapons of the Tools such as the Knives (see Equipment section below). Stocked pistols, two-handed melee wapons and sawn-off long-guns fill a medium slot. The Nagant M1895 Deadeye is an example of a stocked pistol. The Combat Axe is a two-handed melee weapon. The Caldwell Rival Handcannon is an example of a cut-down but still two-handed weapon. Stocked Rifles and Shotguns fill a large slot. The Winfield 1973C is one of the full-size weapons available to a brand new player. The Bomb Lance is a unique weapon in several ways. It is both a large-slot melee weapon but also launches explosive harpoons. Base weapons are unlocked via Bloodline. For example when you reach Bloodline 6 you unlock the Vetterli 71 Karabiner. Weapon Variants are unlocked by earning XP with that weapon. For example earning 500XP with the Vetterli 71 will unlock the Vetterli 71 Deadeye variant. Then the Vetterli 71 Bayonet is unlocked by earning 750XP with any other Vetterli variant. Each Hunter has 4 tool slots and 4 consumable slots. Tools include smaller melee wapons such as knives, as well as First-Aid Kits, and various others. Tools are never lost, though deployable and throwable tools such as trip-mines, first-aid kits and throwing knives, can be replenished at Item Boxes. List of all Tools. Examples: Dusters, are one of several smaller melee weapons that are equiped as tools. The First-Aid kit is one of the most important tools. Consumables are one-time use items, many of which are grenade-type throwable weapons. Others are to heal/protect you or a teammate such as Vitality Shots and Antidote Shots. List of Consumables. Examples: Vitality Shots are objectively the single most important item a Hunter can join a game with as it will heal all damage. Fire bombs are one of many throwable weapons. Also useful for burning bodies. Like weapons, tools and consumables are unlocked by earning XP for the base item in that "category". For example the Heavy Knife is unlocked by earning 2500XP with any knife variant, and the Dynamite Bundle is unlocked by earning 500XP with any Explosive. Traits grant passive bonuses to Hunters who possess them. They can be purchased as upgrades for hunters who advance in levels though earning XP in-game and may already be present on ones who are available for recruitment. A player's Bloodline Rank determines which ones are accessible when upgrading a hunter. Traits are an enormously powerful way to customize and specialize your Hunter. Some, such as Beastface, Grayhound or Lightfoot effect your movement through the map. Others such as Iron Sharpshooter, Bolt Thrower, or Bulletgrubber may determine your weapon loadout and style of combat. List of all Traits. Examples: A recent update turned Gator Legs from one of the most useless traits to maybe one of the best kept secrets in the game. Sprint faster in deep water, allowing Hunters to traverse long distances accross the map (especially Bayou) at tremendous speeds. Quartermaster allows you to take a large and medium size wapons together which can give you more flexibility in your loadout. Get the gently caress up! Necromancer allows you to revive downed partners from a distance! World Weapons are two-handed melee waepons that can be found throughout the world but can only be carried as long as they are in your hands. Switching to another item will drop it. These can be used as offensive weapons or used to break down barricaded doors.
Lanterns function like the world weapons in that they can only be carried in the hands. Lanterns can be thrown to set things on fire. The world of hunt is populated by large numbers of NPCs:
Each Bounty Hunt match will have one to two BOSSES. After they take a certain amount of damage, bosses will enter a Frenzied state where they take very little damage but are hyper aggressive. The Spider moves around extremely erratically at high sppeed and will pounce on you, pinning you to the ground.. It also has a poisonous attack. Overall not a huge problem to kill. The Butcher is by far the most straightforward boss to kill. Get to close to it's melee attack and it will set you on fire but it is relatively easy to avoid. The Assassin is a huge dickhead. It will constantly dematerialize into a pile of bugs and then reappear as a solid form for a few seconds. When frenzied it splits into multiple clones of itself and shoots a projectile at you that does huge damage. Unlike the other two, the Assassin's frenzy lasts a very long time and seems to only stop when you kill enough of it's clones. Each game of Hunt is a random map + time of day combo. Stillwater Bayou Stillwater Bayou is dominated by swamps and shallow wetlands. It is the original map from Early Access. Lawson Delta Lawson Delta is the "new" map (released over two years ago). Although there are many small ponds and a large river, Lawson has much more solid ground than Bayou. Each match will randomly be one of the following times of day: Foggy: Neutral (or just Day): Gold (late afternoon): Sunset: Night: Spawn Points are placed at the edges of the maps. Typically they are where you see a road enter the edge of a map. There are always three Extractions at random around the edge of the map. They can be a Stage Coach or Steamship. World Supply Items all have two total charges, limited to once per Hunter.
Resupply Points always contain three Ammo Chests, an item box, Medkits and lanterns. --------------------------- Work in Progress

It may also be worth mentioning that all of these rewards are shared by a team. If my teammate gets a clue, or lands the killing blow, we all get the reward (same with bounties, if my teammate and I extract with only one bounty token, we share the reward!). We definitely want to probably do a full write up on sound as that is the biggest and most interesting part of the game.

The most important non-obvious thing about sound for new people, until that's done: you are louder than you think you are. It's worth taking a little time to have your teammate walk through various environmental bits (especially foliage) at different speeds so you can start to develop a sense of just how much noise you're making and how far it will carry. Or there are probably a billion youtube demonstrations of this by now, I guess.

the DLCs are all skins and fairly overpriced for what you get, so they're basically a way to support the game if you really like the look of something. I bought the rat character since I got the game at 50% off anyway and enjoyed it way more than I was expecting, but you can ignore the DLC for now until you've seen more of the game.

I had a very fuckin newbie moment last night when it took three lanterns to burn one corpse. First, I said I was burning, turned around to throw and my teammate ran in front of me so I just set her on fire. Then our third tossed me an unlit lantern, and in forgetting how to re-light it, I threw it into the water. Then I finally grabbed a proper lantern and threw it.

I have an addition to turning on every engine and record player I see. Game is a ton of fun though the only zombies that can get pretty scary are the bee lady and the fat worm guy. Basically like every zombie movie, humanity is the bad guy. A part of me wishes that the map is bigger with twice the amount of players but maybe that'd kill the hardcore element.

Drone_Fragger posted:Did they fix all the hacking? My friends stopped playing because they were sick of getting shot from the other side of the map by a hacker one second into the game. Stopped me from getting it. I've been killed by cheaters like twice in like a year and a half of playing, most 'bullshit' deaths are just people getting lucky. That said the uh "one second in to the game" part makes me think they were being put in game with experienced players for w/e reason cause there's like a 10% chance or so you end up in a spawn point where you can see another team within 30 seconds of the game starting. If you aren't familiar with the spawns you can be caught off-guard.

I have never seen a player who was clearly cheating
|
# ? Dec 28, 2020 18:02 |

It's either very subtle or very rare; I've seen maybe three teams exhibiting what I'd call suspicious behavior in ~140 hours, all many months ago now. I'm not convinced hacking was ever particularly prevalent given how often you're going to be one-tapped by a guy you had no idea was there just playing the game normally. If you play long enough, some of those will be perfectly legitimate (bullshit) long-range pistol moonshots.
|
# ? Dec 28, 2020 18:17 |
|
Also if any newer players want a map of dangerous spawn points, this is what I'd consider the dangerous ones to be: Red circles are ones that come in to conflict if both teams are acting as expected (moving to a nearby clue), cyan circles are ones that pretty often (in my experience) get ambushed by other spawns booking it towards them/their nearest compound. It's not impossible to get ambushed at the other points as well, but doesn't happen as often because a team that goes for an ambush is generally wasting a lot of time if nobody spawned there.
|
# ? Dec 28, 2020 18:28 |
|
I've run into really blatant cheaters only like once every month or two, it's rare. The most common cheat seems to be wallhacks that show your name and position from anywhere rather than actual aimbots (though I guess aimbots would be easily chalked up to luck). The wallhacks is especially obvious when you get shot from hundreds of meters away through trees.
