It just felt really weird because we've been to countless sporting events, and it's the first time we saw everyone stop. The again, we're from the godless, socialist utopia of the PNW.

Live in PNW and can confirm. People usually stand up but nobody is paying attention so you still hear the rumble of conversations.

They sing the anthem at Timbers games, but that’s really just an excuse to swing the scarves around.

Branson, MO

Where you can find a giant bust of JFK outside a gas station, and a Reagan bust outside of a tourist t-shirt shop.

I grew up in SW MO, which has been the influence on the photos I’ve posted so far. I’d float the Buffalo River a lot and had to drive thru Harrison to get there. Always an adventure.

yeah, the sahara motel is in jordan valley, the mountain mural is in a portland bar, and the neon church is in the willamette valley somewhere

The bar looks familiar but I can’t place it. Is that Gold Dust Meridian?

To me, Oregon will always be a vast land full of Red Green type dudes selling homemade wood art and living in the forests in either decaying mobile homes or bizarrely constructed shacks, a land of small diners where perhaps you're rolling the dice on getting food poisoning but it's absolutely worth the risk, a land where it's absolutely dead silent at night except the occasional pack of coyotes awoo'ing at the moon. Small towns that weren't just insular, dying holes full of racists, but just places where people just lived quiet lives, working at the local grocery or the library or the school, and had funny, dorky stuff in their small front yards. Maybe that's just me remembering my childhood with the ignorance and innocence that that implies, but I still miss it so much.

This sounds like generic rural America.

McMinnville is alright though. I considered moving there for a hot minute to escape Portland’s cost of living since it’s so centrally located to all the destinations in the Willamette Valley.

I spent one night in Astoria and we got asked quietly to leave 2 bars cause 2 of our group were black and Mexican and the bartenders were nervous lol

Interesting. I don’t doubt your story, I’ve just only known it as a liberal leaning small town full of great breweries and food.

I feel like this monument to obesity exemplifies what is Americana. My family would always stop here whenever we would go visit the grandparents as a kid.

I went to college in OKC for a bit, and this was always the pee break stop on the way to and from home in Missouri.
