I think Americana is pretty interesting in a way. It's like a memory of a memory of a culture that once existed that is now mass produced in China or sold piecemeal at Michaels. Nothing new created, just a slavish adherence to an aesthetic that is comical in its mimicry.

for whatever reason getting this from google maps is giving me a weird chromatic aberration when it screengrab it, but this scrap heap is actually a casino. when i was going through college like 15 years ago i'd make weekend trips down here to play blackjack because it was the only casino lovely enough to not catch you counting cards.

i shouldn't say the only one. there's a lot of other warehouse casinos around this part of oklahoma. but it's the one i found first on a map.

Somebody felt the need to post a picture of their meal.

There are other pictures from that casino of some of the grossest meals. Are the meals free or cheap there?

[edit] I guess looking at it, it's not that bad but everything there is slathered in syrup or gravy with everything cooked on a dirty flat top

There was a guy on flickr that was buying up all kinds of americana style pictures from estate sales and posting them, I'll see if I can find it again, it's been like 8 years since I last logged onto flickr. The dude had like 1000's of photos from the 50's to the 80's

Everyone wasn't wandering around in a suit all the time in the fifties, no more than everyone in victorian England wore a top hat and coat tails all the time. The higher strata of society who were more likely to have their picture taken did.

Those people pictured are not a higher strata of people, probably just middle class, the suits aren't even that nice. If you went to a restaurant with your wife you wore a suit. Most men wore suits and hats except in certain situations.

The flea markets near me (Canada) are a mish-mash of poo poo since it's basically low-rent commercial space.
It consists of:
Stores that sell ebay knives and trinkets
Stores that sell bongs and other weed paraphernalia
Used CD and Video Game stores
Dudes selling repaired laptops for 30% more than what you can get them elsewhere
Old people selling a few old-ish things. Usually either ugly crystal and dolls or broken tools and poo poo no one wants.
Old people selling lovely furniture and appliances
Liquidation clothing
Local businesses selling jerky, home-made incense, belts and whatever else.

And the highlight for me is the little kiosk that sells bannock
