hello posting pals. i hope you all had a good christmas. personally i am finding it very difficult to go back to work after spending a solid week home all day with my son, but i have been bringing him to the office with me this week so that's been nice i've been binging on yakuza over the holiday break. i played 0 and kiwami on pc back to back in the spring and loved them, and i'm about to wrap up 3 on ps4 after finishing kiwami 2 a few days ago. the main plot of 3 is incredible so far and has an emotional grip on me that few game stories have accomplished. hopefully it can stick the landing in the final chapter. the gameplay is the worst in the series so far because there are way too many enemies, including every boss, that block 80% of your attacks, but i gotta do it for the kids

i'm split between repeating what i did last year (starting the year off with jrpgs and retro games and then catching up on bundle games), or tackling the games that i get each month first and THEN playing other stuff if i did the latter, that would mean playing through Children of Morta, Indivisible, Path of Giants, One Step From Eden (or at least until i get sick of it since it's a filthy roguelite), Zwei 2, and Shining Resonance Refrain. if i did the former, i would be doing Dragon Quest 11 (3 hours in), Shadow Hearts Covenant (which i haven't warmed up to yet), then possibly Grandia III or Shining Force EXA afterward

After finishing Yakuza 7 earlier in the month, I realized that I still have the itch that only this wacky series can scratch. So I'm going through the entire thing again, especially now that 3-6 are coming to PC early next year. Just some thoughts I want to get into text: Yakuza 0: This is the one that was arguably responsible for making the series such a cult hit in the west, and it's easy to see why replaying it after a few years. 1988 Japan is a neon-soaked hellscape of excess and greed, and this seeps in to everything about this game, from it's aesthetics, to its story beats, and even the fact that money literally shoots out of dudes when you defeat them. What I missed on my first playthrough, however, is how clearly disgusted the game's developers are with this excess and what it makes people do to each other. Maybe it's because 2010's Japan is in such a different place economically than it was back then, who knows. Yakuza Kiwami: This might be the weakest in the series from what I've played so far. Using a lot of the same script as the original PS2 release, I get the sense that the team at Sega were trying to tell a much more conventional crime drama story, and it's missing a lot of the juxtaposition and story beats that make 7 and 0 so great. With that said, I think it's way too slept on how great of a mechanic it is to keep using the same exact world between games. I'm sure most of it is done for practical reasons; I bet they save lots of development time and money when they don't have to rebuild the entire world from scratch every single time. But it also helps Kamurocho really have a sense of place like a real city. Most of the fun I had in Kiwami was walking around and seeing exactly how the years between '88 and '05 had treated the city for good and for ill (what was once massive nightclubs and luxury restaurants during the boom times are now depressing strip malls and nondescript offices. sad!) I wish the "all new, bigger and better at all costs" mentality of most studios would take a pause and steal this idea, because it works so very well for immersing the player. Anyway, I am excited to start 2021 tomorrow with Kiwami 2, which was built in their modern engine and is regarded by some as the best in the series. Wishing you all a better new year, gamers.

I forget the right answers but if you don't answer them correctly, you miss out on an optional missable dungeon in Kowloon 2. In Kuihai Tower, make sure you grab the porno book, it is important for an optional thing later and is missable 3. In Nemeton, leave as soon as you enter because entering sets numerous flags for sidequests that you'll need to take care of that you can't do if you finish if you complete Nemeton
