From the December thread, but I wanted to carry it over to answer more definitively, since I've been dicking around with the vaccine for the last week and a half, and am a big old medical nerd to boot.

The Phizer and Moderna COVID vaccines are mRNA based, instead of the more traditional whole (attenuated or dead) virus. The short version is that it teaches the body to look for a specific protein common to all versions of the virus, instead of the specific variants of the virus the labs were able to harvest. Practically, this means you've got a bunch of soccer hooligans (immune system) looking to gently caress up every Honda Civic (COVID-19 virus) they come across, instead of just the ones from 1997 with a hatchback, turbo, pop up headlights, fart can, or sparkly purple paint job (variants).

The downside is that, even in their protective lipid capsule, the mRNA strands degrade rapidly at room temperature. Worse, a specific freezing procedure has to be used to keep ice crystals from shredding them, so you can't just stick it back in the freezer once thawed. The upside is that the constituent components of mRNA are entirely harmless; once degraded, the body just absorbs them for recycling/removal. The rest of the liquid is mostly there to encourage absorption, doesn't really change at room temp, improves 5g reception for your tracker chip, and is easily metabolized. So, even if someone fucks up and gives a degraded injection, it's just useless, instead of actively harmful.

Still, that dude that sabotaged those vials potentially cost 500 people their lives, so I wouldn't feel particularly bad if he had a productive meeting with a claw hammer.
