Watched The Watch the other night and it brings up a question that a few adaptations have brought up, which is why you would bother to pay money for the rights to a fairly obscure property if you're going to change 95% of it.

Apparently he's the UK's second best selling author worldwide with 70 million books sold, so Pratchett is definitely not minor in the UK.

The only reason I'm not right there with you is how unreasonably mad I was that they tried to remake MacGyver in the first place. Might as well try to remake Seinfeld with some random jackoff instead of Jerry Seinfeld. MacGyver is Richard Dean Anderson.

Iunno, if the guy could actually act it might be an improvement. Now random jackoffs instead of the other three...

How is the show Arrow? Worth getting in to? I see its available on Netflix.

I haven't watched much of the TV superhero shows. I think the last I watched was the first season of The Flash and then quickly fell out of it.

It's good comic book trash at the level of the first season of the flash, but you should probably stop after the second season.

Wait how is I, Claudius feel-good? It's one of the best tv things ever done but goddamn is it depressing.

Wait we're talking about shows to watch after Mare of Easttown and not mentioning Happy Valley? It's maybe the best of the "complicated cop investigates sexually violent offender" shows that were everywhere in the 2010s. Not a false note struck, never tries to make the criminals more complicated or smart than they are without ever downplaying the harm they can inflict. Maybe a perfect show.

Can someone explain the Jefferson Commonwealth thing? Seems like the wrong founding father for New England + Greater New York.

I decided to rewatch Cowboy Bebop in anticipation of the new series. I first started watching it on Hulu and after a while saw it was on Netflix. Why is the version on Netflix so much higher quality than the Hulu version. For some reason the Hulu version looks like they got the source video from a lovely torrent site in 2003 while the Netflix version looks good. At first I thought it might be a device issue, but even on the same TV there is a huge difference.

It's especially bad if you're watching on a computer, as they've capped PC streaming at 480p. For everything.

Seems like the right place for this so:
My mom is going to be staying with me for awhile while she recovers from some medical stuff. I’m trying to find stuff that we can watch together but it’s tough. Her big favorites are all stuff like grays anatomy, the various PD/FD copaganda stuff, and true crime murder, British murder shows, and tear-jerker feelings poo poo. I like sci-fi and action stuff. Both of us are willing to branch out a bit but I’m still trying to find some stuff for us to watch.

It can’t have brutal violence or too much “passionate” sex (even heavily implied where you don’t see anything). Bad language is fine.

It seems we do best with stuff with fairly intricate plots and lots of really good characters.

We’ve done (much to my surprise) Orphan Black, Broadchurch, and caught up with Succession. She bounced off Mr Robot after a few episodes.

Anyway suggestions are requested. I’m considering pitching Deadwood, the Expanse, Westworld, Whitechapel, and Boardwalk Empire.

Oh please goons help me with my boomer mom because A Million Little Things, Station 19, and The Rookie are gonna make me want to blow my head off by the time she goes home in the spring.

Happy Valley would fit right in as the best of the british detective shows, but it is about (not depicted) rape so that might be a no-go for her.
