I can’t tell if you’re agreeing with me or not. My whole point is that things can improve and just saying “we’re all hosed, this virus is the worst thing that has ever happened” is weird, dumb, and not really borne out by all the other pandemics that have happened.

No, I can't say I agree with diminishing people's suffering (then calling it weird and dumb) because it could be worse. I don't think you mean it to sound that way, or at least I hope not.

Suffering is suffering. I just hate that whole “we’re hosed, utterly hosed and there is no point in having any hope” attitude. I probably shouldn’t have called it weird and dumb but seeing the constant after effects of doomscrolling making this virus into some kind of supervillain that’s always one step ahead tiresome.

The virus itself isn't the whole problem.

But yes, in a vacuum, disregarding literally every other aspect of how we've handled the virus and all the knockon effects and collateral damage, as a matter of only medical science, sure ok, it isn't that bad, relatively speaking.

All live-action dubs suck

The weirdest dub I can think of is the first Mad Max movie which is an English language film but they dubbed it with American actors.

I didn't know about that, how bizarre. I don't remember the accents being heavy, and that decade gave us Crocodile Dundee and Outback Steakhouse, the US had kind of a thing for Australia at the time.

For me:

Animation = Dub (unless it's really badly done).
Live Action = Sub

I'm sure that probably annoys some people and is sacrilege, but my reasons are:

Animation usually has a more stylistic flair that I would like to appreciate without bouncing between watching the visuals and reading subtitles. Also, voice acting is usually a bit more 'larger than life' than live acting that benefits from localization a bit more.

That's generally where I land too. My brain doesn't like it when voices don't match the person. With an actual human performing, the voice and the actions are a lot more inextricably linked than with animation. Audio being massively out of sync bugs me for the same reason. So subs for live action, dubs, if they aren't total garbage, for animation.

Not as bad as The Alienist.

Being historically accurate doesn't make for good marketing.

I had always assumed that show was yet another procedural where a not-cop helps the cops (ala Sherlock holmes anything, castle, psych, the blacklist, and 8 billion others), but this time with aliens for some reason.

After googling it, it seems I was basically right, but without the aliens. Which is moderately disappointing.

I mean the animation kind of fit the show back then? I'm just personally not a huge fan of the 'putting 2D characters into a 3D space' thing generally.

Even if someone hated the art style, at least it was an art style. That was some really bland design and cheap cgi animation, and that's a crappy thing to do to any show.

Or maybe I'm thinking of Flashforward

Flashforward had some really cool ideas and then did absolutely nothing with them. Wasn't there a dude that knew he was going to die imminently because he didn't flash forwards or something? What a shame.

All I remember about The Event is that it had Dr Weaver from ER and an airliner (and also it was bad).

Jericho was good.

Revolution, had a good pilot but just fell on it's face every single chance it could get immediately after. Hell, they had Giancarlo Esposito, immediately after Breaking Bad and just did nothing with him.

Jericho was great for a network show, Lennie James needs to be in more stuff.

Revolution I didn't remember until this post, but yeah, it had potential, then every time it tried to do something cool it derailed it to do family drama. That show was basically Fallout but they somehow hosed it up. At leasg it got bad really quickly and didn't waste your time.

Yeah that's the one. The main character girl, or her brother maybe, could turn the power back on or something as well, which was why Giancarlo Esposito wanted to kidnap him.

It was so stupid, and it's a shame it didn't go longer.

Because the number of people you think will pay attention to the show solely because it's Discworld (and thus money you will make) is greater than the licensing fee costs.

How accurate the assumption and whatever voodoo math they use to quantify it is, your guess is as good as mine.

Amazon has both a Lord of the Rings and a Wheel of Time series coming out this year. Seems a bit odd that they haven't released anything on either of them, seeing how it's already spring. You'd think that they would put as much space as possible between them to not cannibalize each others hype, in which case they should probably get on it.

Or maybe one of them is bumped til next year and it just hasn't been announced. A black box strategy of production and even premise feels very risky for LotR especially.

This all makes total sense because you can basically just shoot the first WoT book immediately after the sets and costumes are done with filming LotR.

I joke, but I do hope it's decent. WoT that is, I don't really think LotR needs to be remade.
