Smartphones were a thing 12 years ago but I wouldn’t call them widespread til 2012 or so- I can’t find it now but there’s a graph of smartphone adoption rates over time and there’s a huge spike in the early 2010’s.
Smartphones in 2008 weren't half as "connected" though. A few clicks and you stream to twitch, FB, YouTube, OnlyFans, etc.

Plus you couldn't really take/host 4k UHD HDR video like we do now. Things were barely better than the Rodney King footage for a long time.

I know this is confirmation bias, but I feel like a bunch of milestones in my like (38ish) was accompanied by these news events that everyone was watching.

Started High School and a month or two later Princess Di passes away and I stay up all night watching news and then watch/record her funeral.

Get out of high school, 9/11. poo poo's wild

I saw the fan render and got excited that, unlike the ToS remaster which ruined the vfx, a B5 remaster was done and made the ships *not* look like weird techno-organic gourds. :(

On a 27" CRT, the Babylon 5 CG was pretty revolutionary for the time on a weekly TV show.
Yeah, on the other hand that's absolutely true and they were real pioneers in that respect. I read somewhere that the TNG warp shot of the enterprise at the end of the titles was something like $2M to make since it was all optical so they not only used it a ton but also didn't really have a variation of it -- much like the phaser and battle FX were costly so scripts had a pass per season to make sure they weren't over budget on Pew Pews.

I honestly don't give them enough credit for the use of CGI and I need to be more aware of that.

As far as court scenes, there's stuff kind of like that in the Free Zone... but for Flagg it's all a Bread and Circuses execution

Gina Rodriguez was pretty blah as Velma in Scoob! And Kate Micucci's rendition in a bunch of animated Scooby-Doo films is terrible.

Mindy Cohn knocked it out of the park for Mystery Incorporated. Maybe Kalling will continue the Mindy excellence.

And yet, it's just rearranging existing footage which is just a cut
But most of that footage was pre-viz stuff (Flash and Kiersy Clemens' Iris) or just plan cut from the Jossticefilm (Stone's football stuff and Kal's post-resurrection plot).

They shot one new additional scene (Jokershit).

I'm not going to get into a discussion about the merits of the film or the movement or whatever. But just saying that "this is a director's cut" is a real blatant mischaracterization of what's going to be released.

Ok, for the sake of argument here:
Say Vincent Ward had filmed his Wooden Planet script and 3/4 of the way through, with photography done and VFX in the pipeline, was thrown off and Fincher came in with new shots, score, and FX.

Both films do the "Ripley alone on a planet that is hostile to her, with knowledge that she will die due to a facehugger egg".

Same film?
