Rhymes with Orange Get Fuzzy 5/14/01 Stephen Collins Brenda Starr 6/23/46 Messick kind of wimped out on drawing the oil lamp breaking in Turkeyface's turkeyface -- you know Chester Gould would have drawn that in loving detail. However, if you go back to Turkeyface's early appearances in this strip, you'll notice that Chekov's oil lamp has been on his desk all along (since he works out of an abandoned building with, I'd assume, no gas or electric hookup). So, nicely set up. Smokey Stover 2/16/41 Richard's Poor Almanac

The Bloop posted:Nah, I destroyed someone similarly in high school debate Interesting, what was your topic? I never did the debate team, but I had debate assignments in classes here and there and I'm certain that if I ever had tried to interpret "anti-thing" as "actually pro-thing but even moreso" I would have failed the assignment. But that might just be because these were assignments where the real point was to have people argue two opposing sides of some thing we were supposed to learn about, rather than being focused on rhetorical tricks to "win" or whatever.

I think I'm going to need to just end up buying all the Valiant collections in paperback because I can't find anything past 1944 in form... e: Angry Val from the page before he kidnaps Aleta is replacing Tripping Balls Yoshi as my avatar in most places I think. Hal Foster's art is just a wonder.

The speculation that the ghostwriter for Deathless Deer kicked in right around here must be true because the writing sure as hell has picked up in quality lately. I really hope the Evanses are intending for Bernice to come off as the rear end in a top hat here because she really is being an rear end in a top hat. It's so hard to tell with this strip because we have so many examples from the past of Bern making GBS threads on things her friends enjoy, but we're apparently supposed to be on her side. Nil's reaction to her is making me think maybe the Evanses did intend for her to come off as rude, but it's still hard to tell because of Team Evans' history of consistently portraying "modern art" and the people who enjoy/create it as pretentious trash. Anyway, regardless of author intent, I like Nil (probably mostly because he's almost never in this strip and when he is he doesn't talk), so Bernice can gently caress right off. So, I was curious why they picked the Japanese ambassador to get Duck out of Mexico, or if Japan even had a ambassador to Mexico in 1913, and it turns out that Mexico was Japan's first recognized trade partner. quote:After the Meiji Restoration, in which the Empire of Japan officially reestablished diplomatic relations with various governments of the world, in Mexico arose interest to initiate official relations with the Empire of Japan. The expedition from Mexico to Japan in 1874, led by the Mexican scientist Francisco Díaz Covarrubias, was the reason why formal attempts were made between representatives of the governments of both countries to have diplomatic relations. At the end of Diaz Covarrubias' report, such action was recommended. quote:The fact that Mexico agreed to sign a more just treaty in comparison to the treaties reached by other countries that favored the Europeans over the Japanese was seen as a grateful act for the Asian nation; and so the Mexican embassy in Tokyo was given a unique location right next to the Official Residence of the Prime Minister in the heart of the Japanese capital, in an area reserved for the room of senior rulers of the country. It remains there to this day.[5]
