You'd think at some point the Academy would develop some standards. Then again, Patricia Arquette got one for Boyhood despite having a scene where an immigrant she wokescolded earlier in the film came back and thanked her for convincing him to bootstrap himself out of day labor into a job as a manager at a mediocre restaurant.

Been thinking, but are there any Netflix shows that will stand the test of time? Like, what, is anybody actually gonna be talking about Stranger Things or whatever in a decade? Same probably goes for their movies tbh. Most of their original stuff just seems so throwaway to me.

Probably. Kind of like how Lil Abner was a cultural phenomenon back in the day. It ran for more than forty years during the mid 1900s and even had cartoon deals, now it's all but forgotten except for obscure references. I'm sure Netflix's shows will lose their appeal as soon as they become irrelevant to newer generations of viewers. Shows that bank on current events or nostalgia have a limited shelf life.

Saw Soul, it had a ton of that Pixar style but I felt the substance was lacking. I feel like the messages of passion and purpose and life being worth living were kind of muddled together instead of properly blended and it made for an incoherent moral.

Silver lining to the pandemic: Disney's cutting off the supply to the biggest losers in their fanbase.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/15/business/disneyland-annual-passes.html

quote:

Disneyland ends annual passes, citing uncertainty around the pandemic.

Disneyland, which has been closed for 10 months because of California’s strict approach to coronavirus safety, alerted annual passholders that it was ending the popular program, which it started offering to hard-core customers in the 1980s.

The Walt Disney Company said it would begin issuing prorated refunds in the coming days. Annual passes to Disneyland were most recently $419 to $1,449, depending on access and perks.

Disney declined to say how many people were enrolled. The Orange County Register estimated in 2018 that Disneyland sold “hundreds of thousands” annual passes a year.

In part, the program is ending because Disney expects pent-up demand — from passholders and day guests alike — to far outstrip capacity when the attractions eventually reopen. Walt Disney World in Florida returned in July and has been running at 35 percent capacity since the fall.

In a letter to passholders, Ken Potrock, president of the Disneyland Resort, cited uncertainty about the duration of the pandemic and “expected restrictions around the reopening of our theme parks.”

“We plan to use this time while we remain closed to develop new membership offerings,” he said. He gave no update on when Disneyland might reopen.

Disneyland typically attracts more than 18 million visitors per year; an adjacent Disney theme park in Anaheim, Calif., draws 10 million. Total revenue in 2019 stood at roughly $3.8 billion, according to analysts.

Song was good and then everything after was a mess. The trolls were ok I guess. Stick with the Rankin/Bass version if you absolutely must watch Hobbit, for all its faults it's a much better movie. And it's only a single movie, not a loving trilogy packed with fanfic and doesn't turn short paragraphs from the book into excessively long epic scenes.

I agree with Mike on Psycho Goreman. I think the problem is it acts like a subversive parody of genre fiction but the third act is just the same old kids' show stories it was supposed to subvert played straight, albeit with more gore. I think it would've been more satisfying if the brother had refused to give her the stone after she sang that stupid song; hell, Simpsons subverted that trope successfully nearly a quarter of a century ago, or if Psycho Goreman technically fulfilled his promise not to kill them by doing to them what he did to that punk at the start of the movie or maybe just say he lied and killed them anyway.
