Can you do multi zones in a normal (ie, below McMansion size) residential home?

I have had a gas stove for a grand total of one year of my life, and it was glorious. 99% of my cooking has been on electric coils, and I really don't like them at all. The glass has pros and cons, but the immediate, constant heat of gas is top-notch. Electric coils heat up relatively fast, but there isn't enough contact for heat transfer to heat up as fast as gas does. otoh, the glass ones almost make too much contact, and I've had issues with pans walking on my parent's cooktop of there is *any* moisture between the pan and the surface.

We're looking to redo our kitchen this year, and I'm planning gas range with electric stoves. A nice hood is definitely part of that, so maybe I'll just plan to always have it moving some air if a burner is on.

I wanted to-- and the carrier I ended up with supports it natively--but the cost was just too much because of the needed ductwork modifications and I couldn't justify it in a 1400 sq foot home.

At least you can see fire on a gas stove (although I know I left burners on accidentally when we had that, too). On our current stove my wife was nice enough to put a dot of nail polish on one end of the knobs, because they are vertical in both the off and 5/10 settings and the burners look identical until they glow at 9/10 or higher. It looks really nice (which is why I had her do it instead of me trying) and helps set my mind at ease.

This seems like a fine time to show off my novice-level Sketchup layout of our current kitchen:

Appliances irl are all black. Dishwasher is in the peninsula where it's hidden from the camera at that angle.

If you are curious, yes that doorway to the left of the refrigerator does go to the rest of the house, and no it's not an illusion how close the fridge is to the corner of the wall. As an added bonus, to the left of that doorway is the pantry, so it is not only a pretty frequently used walkway, but also a critical spot to go when I'm cooking.

Have you considered knocking out that wall? I'm guessing it's load-bearing because of course it would be.

I have the opposite problem, the heat vents are just blasting in my place right now. I have the thermostat set to 70, but the current temperature readout is 84. It's 9 degrees outside in Madison, wind chill of -11, and I have my balcony door wide open just to let cool air in so I don't melt. I can't wait to move out of this hellhole in a few months.

I just got to peek under the hood at all the cabinetry holding up my countertops in the kitchen and, uh, this is not going to support 1000 lbs of rock. Time to stiffen the gently caress out of this stuff before the granite people come.

I should have learned how to do cabinetry. I can redneck up a lot of carpentry but that's just beyond me.

When my parents built their house, they put a walk in pantry in the basement that is the length of the stairs. It seems excessive but they do canning, and put all of their canned goods in there, and it feels like a mini bomb shelter.

The wall in the lower left facing the camera is actually a door to the basement, so that long wall goes along the stairs. I think it would improve the current layout if we did away with the pantry (heresy), but our plan is to remove the existing peninsula and put cabinets/a small peninsula out from the currently unused wall.

Now that I practiced SketchUp by drawing it as-is, my next step is doing a couple different layouts to see what would actually work.

Braksgirl posted:

Ours is behind a door, but just like if a phone booth was full of wire shelves, not walk-in. It's like they shoehorned it in because having that space above the stairwell was a waste, which is nice. It uses the available space to the degree part of the floor and back wall of the pantry are angled to accommodate clearance above the stairs.

This is going back two or three pages but re: how long the Lord of the Rings trilogy is, I've never understood how some people balk at three-hour movies, but are fine with watching, say, 200 hours of The Office. Can you not just break the movie up into 1-hour chunks, if your attention span can't handle longer?

Also, the best trilogy ever is Police Story I, II, and III starring Jackie Chan.
Second-best is the Naked Gun trilogy.
Third-best is The Man with No Name trilogy, although some will argue it isn't a trilogy, but gently caress them.
I'd put the Indiana Jones trilogy somewhere in the top ten probably, but it's severely hurt by the problems with Temple of Doom.
