I am so, so, so glad I did my time before the social media explosion. As it was, we already had guys in the unit uploading basically mywarcrimes.mov to early YouTube. edit: with Bodies as the loving soundtrack, of course

Got a call from Base Boston today about installing a radio on a 110'. This would be cool and make me feel important except I don't know poo poo about radios, cutters, installing radios on cutters, or why Base Boston would think I know. Like how did they even get my number. I have never been there.

Command mentioned The Email today and we don't even work with D8, sounds like it's already making some waves.

Some all-timers from the latest Good Order and Discipline quote:Non-Judicial Punishment: An E-6 used a water gun on a superior commissioned officer during the raising of the colors. Awarded a reduction in paygrade to E-5. quote:An E-4 used their Government Travel Charge Card at a strip club for $1798 and the following day, falsely reported the charges as fraudulent. Awarded 30 days of extra duty, a forfeiture of $2569, and a reduction in paygrade to E-3.

Look you can't expect me to actually fully read uscg correspondence

I know this is like the exact opposite of what you posted, but can you speak at all to the GS side of things in the CG? Has to be better than staying a blue-suiter, I'd imagine? I've been half-tempted to apply through usajobs for CG positions when they open. (For the record, I do some on-and-off contracting work for the CG, and I've worked with officers and civs in the past. I haven't seen a lot of turnover on the civ side, so I'd imagine it's decent enough or at least has enough good pay and benefits to keep people around?)

Lol whelp. ADM Fagan. I used to work under Lunday and never heard anything bad about him, but i don't envy him stepping into his new role.Looking forward to all the upper-level GS's leaving/retiring and taking decades of institutional knowledge with them, surely this won't be a bad thing.

I was enlisted Marines from 2001-2007 and I've been working for the CG as a contractor since 2014. Mostly I work with officers these days. On balance, I think I should have joined the coast guard instead of the fuckin Marine Corps. Most of the officers I've met in the CG are pretty great people to work for. That said--and the folks here who are actually in the service, please correct me if you think I'm wrong here--but it feels like since the last election that the CG is going through an identity crisis. Trump installed noted MAGA bro Sean Plankey as the first Secretary of the Coast Guard and he is going all in on warfighter Force Design 2028 bullshit, and as a part of DHS we're all working under loving Kristi Noem. A lot of good civs I've worked with for the last 11 years are taking early retirement or leaving federal service entirely because they don't want to be a part of this nonsense. And some of what's going on down in District 7 (or District Southeast or whatever they're calling it now) with Operation Vigilant Sentry and illegal immigration feels kinda gross to be a part of with what ICE is doing across the US, but that may be a myopic take on my end. Also, govt shutdowns hurt CG members badly because they're DHS and not DOD. During the last trump shutdown they worked without pay and a lot of people had to turn to food banks for their families. Like Jesus Christ. But despite that, you know, it's folks in the CG who save dumbass boaters, pull survivors out of flood zones, help with environmental protection, and generally do good things for people. When poo poo gets extremely bad like with Katrina they do incredibly important work. I wouldn't want to work for any other branch.
