Right now it's more of a spiritual successor, bit I could see it being recontexualized into a full on sequel if the writers choose to go in that direction. There are a lot of callbacks and visual parallels to ssss.gridman that make me think that it'll have some meaningful connections.

I mean, SSSS. Gridman only confirmed it was a direct sequel to the live action series in the final episode.

What they've said is that the new show is set in the same world as Gridman, and has a few shared conceits, but we haven't seen any cameos or anything yet, and it's probably going to be written to mostly stand alone.

Is it suppose to be sigifiigant that Anti had 2 different colored eyes? Other than that it was Yuta red and Gridman blue?

It wasn't a dream. Or at least, not just a dream.

Akane created a real (virtual) world when she was being used by Alexis Kerib for his Toku entertainment. Gridman showed up to save the day, and after he did, the world was rebuilt to be bigger and better than ever. Akane woke up in the real world, Gridman moved on to keep being a hero, and everyone else stayed behind in the cyberworld, including Anti as its new protector.

Because if you kill someone, odds are that there was someone who cared about them. And that person will want payback. And then people who care about you will want payback. And on and on and on, until someone forgives (or at least agrees to stop), or until everyone is dead.

also this technically like doubles the number of toonami characters that have gotten laid, doesn't it

e: or do we only count main characters lol

I figure only counting leads is probably simpler, or else we'd have to include everyone's parents who die to establish drama. (Also, Toonami had both eva and the original Gundam, and people gently caress like crazy in the background there).

For leads, looking at the list of shows, there's Goku, Kira Yamato, Anakin Skywalker, the Major, Naruto, Mikazuki Augus, Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, Lupin III, Alucard, Jonathan Joestar, Joseph Joestar, Jotaro Kujo, Keiichi Ikari, and, of course, Hamtaro.

That's actually a pretty long list.

Waffleman_ posted:

It's gotta be within the events of the series. Everyone here did it between series so it doesn't count.

Right, that narrows things a bit. Still gives us Goku, Kira, Makoto Kusanagi, Mikazuki Augus, Lupin III, Jonathan Joestar, Joseph Joestar, and the controversial three hour Hamtaro special.

The only thing that I can guess is that they didn't want to spend more time on an anime for a manga that was already over, so the crew was told to wrap it up in a season.

Yeah, the boost from an anime for a manga's sales tend to peak when the manga is ongoing. There are exceptions (Demon Slayer), but in general, anime tend to go with ongoing manga, not ones that are long finished.

But the second season only started a year after the manga ended - it hasn't been that long

No, but if they did more standard pacing, you'd have another two years before a third season, and likely another two for a fourth, pretty much killing the momentum from the end of the series. It's part of why so many manga, even best sellers, only got half an adaptation.

Trying to rush so much was partially an attempt to finish the anime while the iron was still hot.

Well, there was a sequel of sorts to Gridman in Dynazenon, and Nomad for Megalobox, so those are obvious. But for a non-sequel, Odd Taxi is really good. Probably wouldn't get great ratings, since it's less action and more grounded, but it's probably the best anime this year. (At least, so far.)
